Israel strikes PA targets for a 2d day, shelling Arafat's Ramallah compound (though not hitting the building housing his office, where he is staying), sending F-16s to hit PSF, Force 17 offices in Gaza City. The IDF also shells PSF, Force 17, PA military intelligence offices in Bayt Lahia, Jabaliya, Khan Yunis, Salfit, Qalqilya, and Tulkarm and the Information Min. offices in Ramallah; reoccupies the village of Iktaba and areas of al-Bireh, Nablus, Ramallah; fires on the home of PLO Exec. Comm. mbr. Ghassan Shaka`. A total of 3 Palestinians are killed, over 150 wounded, including 60 schoolchildren; a 4th Palestinian, an ill baby, dies when the IDF prevents his transportation through a checkpoint to a hospital. The PA dismisses Tulkarm's PSF head Brig. Gen. Mahmud Awadala for releasing prisoners fr. Tulkarm's jail, including 6 Islamic Jihad mbrs., in fear that the IDF would shell the prison. During the day, IDF troops surrounding Jinin fatally shoot 2 Palestinians. The IDF sends tanks, troops into Dura to arrest 5 Palestinians, including 4 PSF officers. U.S. envoy Zinni tours Gaza with PA officials. Late this evening, 2 Hamas suicide bombers stage a synchronized attack in Jerusalem's Ben Yehuda market. Soon after, a car bomb explodes nearby. In total, 10 Israelis are killed, around 180 are injured. The PA immediately condemns the attacks, saying it will do everything possible to arrest those responsible. Sharon announces he will cut short his visit to the U.S., meeting with Bush in Washington on 12/2, instead of 12/3. Bush demands that Arafat immediately punish organizations that were behind, support the attacks. Britain, the EU, France, Germany, Italy, Russia make similar demands. In Gaza City, the PSF clashes with some 2,000 Palestinian students protesting the U.S.-led strikes on Afghanistan, opening fire on the crowd with tear gas, rubber bullets, live ammunition. Anti-PA riots last into the night, with outraged Palestinians setting fire to PSF offices and vandalizing Palestinian Airlines offices, cars, stores. In total, 2 Palestinians are killed; 1 Palestinian, 1 PSF officer are left brain dead; 200 Palestinians, 20 PSF officers are injured; 120 Palestinians are arrested. The PA convenes an emergency mtg. with the National and Islamic Higher Comm. for the Follow-up of the Intifada (NIHC), representing all Palestinian factions. Participants issue a joint statement calling for national unity, appealing to the public for calm. Hamas says that Arafat agreed to suspend arrests of Hamas, Islamic Jihad mbrs. in exchange for their cooperation in halting further demonstrations, observing the cease-fire. Although the IDF says today has been the quietest day since the al-Aqsa intifada began a yr. ago, Sharon again blocks plans for an Arafat-Peres mtg., saying the PA has not provided 48 hrs. of "absolute quiet" and again calling Arafat a "terrorist" on the level of Bin Laden. Peres threatens to "disappear on vacation" if Sharon does not allow the mtg., whereas right-wing MKs threaten to leave the governing coalition if Sharon allows it. Peres boycotts today's cabinet mtg.; holds preparatory talks for an Arafat mtg. with PA officials. Powell phones Sharon again to urge him to allow the mtg. IDF troops in Qalandia fire tear gas at Palestinians attempting to sneak around their checkpoint on foot; 1 Palestinian dies of complications fr. inhaling the tear gas. A 2d Palestinian dies of injuries received earlier. The IDF directs shells/heavy machine gun fire at residential areas of Dayr al-Balah, Hebron, Khan Yunis, Salfit, Ziwata; razes agricultural land in the Hebron area; conducts arrest raids in Batayr.
