Israel strikes PA targets for a 2d day, shelling Arafat's Ramallah compound (though not hitting the building housing his office, where he is staying), sending F-16s to hit PSF, Force 17 offices in Gaza City. The IDF also shells PSF, Force 17, PA military intelligence offices in Bayt Lahia, Jabaliya, Khan Yunis, Salfit, Qalqilya, and Tulkarm and the Information Min. offices in Ramallah; reoccupies the village of Iktaba and areas of al-Bireh, Nablus, Ramallah; fires on the home of PLO Exec. Comm. mbr. Ghassan Shaka`. A total of 3 Palestinians are killed, over 150 wounded, including 60 schoolchildren; a 4th Palestinian, an ill baby, dies when the IDF prevents his transportation through a checkpoint to a hospital. The PA dismisses Tulkarm's PSF head Brig. Gen. Mahmud Awadala for releasing prisoners fr. Tulkarm's jail, including 6 Islamic Jihad mbrs., in fear that the IDF would shell the prison. U.S. envoy Zinni tours Gaza with PA officials. Late this evening, 2 Hamas suicide bombers stage a synchronized attack in Jerusalem's Ben Yehuda market. Soon after, a car bomb explodes nearby. In total, 10 Israelis are killed, around 180 are injured. The PA immediately condemns the attacks, saying it will do everything possible to arrest those responsible. Sharon announces he will cut short his visit to the U.S., meeting with Bush in Washington on 12/2, instead of 12/3. Bush demands that Arafat immediately punish organizations that were behind, support the attacks. Britain, the EU, France, Germany, Italy, Russia make similar demands.
