In the West Bank, the IDF sends an undercover unit into Nablus in a car with Palestinian license plates to arrest a wanted Palestinian, wounding 1 bystander, then firing on stone-throwing Palestinians who confront the troops, wounding a 14-yr.-old Palestinian boy; demolishes a Palestinian home in the old city of Nablus; conducts arrest raids, house searches in and around Nablus (blowing up the 2d story of a Palestinian home), in al-‘Arub r.c., and nr. The IDF conducts arrest raids, house searches in and around Nablus (firing on residential areas and stone-throwing youths who confront the troops, seriously wounding 1), in Hebron, and nr. Bethlehem, Jenin. Palestinians fire a rocket fr. Gaza into Israel, causing no damage or injuries. Abbas deploys mbrs of Force 17 (under his command) to Qarni crossing to take over security responsibility fr. security forces under Interior M Siyam’s control. Unidentified gunmen kidnap, shoot and wound a PA intelligence service officer nr. Gaza City. Following the ESF attack on 6/23, ESF, PSF mbrs. exchange fire in Khan Yunis, leaving 1 PSF mbr. wounded. The IDF bulldozes 14 dunams of land nr. Khan Yunis, 2 dunams nr. a PA Preventive Security Force (PSF) post in Hebron, some citrus groves outside Gaza City; conducts arrest raids in Beitunia, Bethlehem, Hebron, Jenin, al-Khadir, Nablus, Qalqilya, Ramallah, Tulkarm; fires on residential areas of Beitunia, Ramallah, Tulkarm town and r.c.; demolishes 4 Palestinian homes s. of Rafah, 1 in Bayt Furik, 1 in Tal. Palestinians fire Qassam rocket at Sederot, causing no damage or injuries. The IDF reinforces positions inside Bethlehem, where IDF shelling kills 3 Palestinians nr. a hospital; a 4th Palestinian is fatally shot while harvesting olive outside Jinin; a 5th Palestinian dies of injuries received earlier. Other IDF shells land within 50 yds. of the Church of the Nativity, injuring 2 Palestinians. The IDF also fires on a UN ambulance in Bethlehem, seriously injuring the driver; rockets a power station in Tulkarm; occupies 2 Palestinian homes in Qalqilya, 1 in Khan Yunis; reinforces positions in Ramallah and al-Bireh, destroying a Force 17 office. Sharon says the PA must meet 3 conditions for a return to talks: a complete halt to "terrorism and incitement," the arrests of "terrorists" and the disbanding of their organizations, the extradition of those involved in the Ze'evi assassination. Israeli-Palestinian clashes escalate to their highest point in recent wks. after the IDF assassinates Force 17 cmdr. Massud Ayyad, firing 4 air-to-surface rockets at his car as he drove through Jabaliyya. Israel claims Ayyad led a Gaza-based cell of Hizballah, which it asserts has been ordered by Iran to take up operations in the West Bank, Gaza. Barak, who personally ordered the assassination, publicly congratulates the IDF. A 2d Palestinian, 14 yrs. old, is fatally shot in a separate incident. Hot spots are in Bethlehem, Gaza, Hebron, Ramallah. The IDF orders 4 schools in al-Khadir shut for 2 wks.; bulldozes 5,000 dunams of Palestinian agricultural land in Halhul; directs shells, heavy machine gun fire on residential areas of Bayt Sahur (damaging the YMCA), al-Bireh, Khan Yunis, Tulkarm.
