In the West Bank, Israeli settlers assaulted 3 Palestinians with sticks and pepper spray in Tuba. Israeli settlers also threw stones at Palestinian vehicles traveling near Burqa, Sabastia, and Hebron, causing damage. Elsewhere, Israeli settlers brought their livestock to graze on Palestinian land in Burqa. Israeli forces shot and killed 1 Palestinian minor during a raid in Zababdeh. Israeli forces also violently dispersed a funeral procession in Beit Umar, causing tear-gas related injuries. Elsewhere, Israeli forces seized 1 vehicle in the Tabbaneh community in the Masafer Yatta area. 46 Palestinians were arrested during late-night raids in and around Abwein, Hebron, Nablus, Qalqilya, Qarawat Bani Hassan, and Tulkarm. In East Jerusalem, 1 Palestinian was arrested during a late-night raid in Silwan. An Israeli military investigation found that the Israeli soldier who was killed during Israel’s attack on Jenin refugee camp at the beginning of July was killed by friendly fire. (HA 8/22)

U.S. national security advisor Jake Sullivan said that the U.S. continues it work to make an agreement to normalize relations between Saudi Arabia and Israel but that “[t]here is still a ways to travel with respect to all of the elements of those discussions.” Sullivan declined to comment on the Saudi nuclear demands. In the West Bank, Israeli forces punitively demolished the family home in Askar refugee camp of a Palestinian accused of killing 2 Israelis on 2/26 before being shot dead a week later. 2 Palestinians were wounded by live ammunition, 5 by baton rounds, and 185 by tear gas during the raid, while 60 were forced to leave their homes and were detained at a nearby mosque during the demolition. 3 homes in the same building as the demolished apartment were damaged along with 2 nearby buildings. Israeli forces issued 2 demolition orders for homes in al-Khader and 7 stop-work orders for homes in Sarta. 22 Palestinians were arrested during late-night raids in Kobar, Abu Dis, Zababdeh, Siris, Aida refugee camp, al-Azza refugee camp, and Beit Umar. In East Jerusalem, Israeli settlers toured the Haram al-Sharif compound. 3 Palestinians were arrested during raids in the Old City. Off the coast of Gaza, Israeli naval forces opened fire at Palestinian fishermen west of al-Sudaniya; no injuries were reported. In the West Bank, gunmen opened fire at an Israeli settler car near the Hamra settlement east of Nablus, injuring 1 settler with glass shrapnel. Israeli settlers threw stones at Palestinian farmers in Umm Safa. Israeli settlers also set fire to 20 Palestinian-owned beehives in Khirbet Zanuta. Israeli forces shot and injured 1 Palestinian minor near Silwad. The minor succumbed to his injuries on 8/7. Israeli forces also raided Nablus, injuring 2 Palestinians with live ammunition and 1 with shrapnel; others suffered tear-gas related injuries. Elsewhere, Israeli forces also shot and injured 1 Palestinian with live ammunition during a raid in Zababdeh. Israeli forces also forcefully removed Palestinians and Israeli activists from a Palestinian-owned water well to allow Israeli settlers from a nearby outpost to take over the well near Tuba. The Israeli High Court of Justice dismissed a petition by Palestinian landowners to have the Homesh outpost evacuated to allow the landowners to access their land. The court said that since the outpost’s buildings were moved to Israeli state-owned land earlier this year, they are no longer considered illegal. They did not address the issue of the Palestinians being prevented from accessing their land by the Israeli military because of the permanent Israeli settler presence at Homesh. (HA 8/2; REU 8/3)

In the West Bank, Israeli settlers set fire to Palestinian agricultural land near ‘Asira al-Qibliya. Israeli settlers also threw stones at Palestinian vehicles traveling near Qusra, causing damage. Israeli forces seized 1 bulldozer and 1 vehicle from Palestinian municipal workers in Beit Umar working to repair a water pipeline. Israeli forces also razed a road, an agricultural structure, and a water well in Hizma. Elsewhere, Israeli forces shot and injured 1 Palestinian during a raid in Zababdeh. Israeli forces also shot and injured 1 Palestinian and arrested 4 others during a raid in Nablus. 11 others were arrested during late-night raids in Qaryut, Beita, Dura, Dheisheh refugee camp, Jalazun refugee camp, and Biddu. In the Naqab, Israeli authorities demolished 5 Palestinian homes in Arara, displacing 50 Palestinians, including 15 children. The spokesperson at the Saudi Arabian embassy in the U.S. Fahad Nazer told the Saudi channel Arab News that normalization with Israel “can do wonders . . . but for that to happen, for the kingdom to take that step, we need the core dispute to be resolved,” referring to the Israeli occupation. Israeli forces also shot and injured 1 Palestinian using live ammunition during a raid in Shu’fat refugee camp. 16 Palestinians were arrested during late-night raids in al-‘Awja, Halhul, Yatta, Dahariya, Nablus, Zababdeh, and al-Bireh. Israel’s acting interior minister Michael Malchieli wrote a letter to the father of the Palestinian man who hit and killed 3 Israeli settlers with his car on 2/10, saying that Israel may revoke his East Jerusalem residency. The Palestinian man who drove the car had been released from a psychiatric ward the day before the incident after suffering a mental health episode. (HA 2/14)

The U.S. State Department withdrew the nomination of James Cavallaro as an independent member of the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights after the pro-Israel publication the Algemeiner published a story on Cavallaro’s criticism of Israel. U.S. State Department spokesperson Ned Price said that tweets that Cavallaro had posted in the past were “inappropriate to say the least,” referring to tweets where Cavallaro criticized representative Hakeem Jeffries (D-NY) for accepting donations from AIPAC and criticized Israel’s human rights record. Israeli forces also demolished 1 agricultural structure and stone walls, sealed a water well, and uprooted some 250 olive tree saplings in al-Mughayyir, demolished 1 agricultural structure in Nabi Ilyas, and 1 agricultural structure in al-Khader.
