In the West Bank, Israeli settlers set a Palestinian-owned vehicle on fire and sprayed racist graffiti on walls in al-Mughayyir. Israeli settlers also assaulted Palestinian herders and journalists, razed land, and set up a tent in Khallet Taha near Bayt Awa. Elsewhere, Israeli settlers razed land in Aqraba and Majdal Bani Fadel. Israeli forces shot and injured 2 Palestinians with baton rounds during a raid in Rumana. In East Jerusalem, Israeli settlers dumped the belongings of the Sub Laban family on the street after they had seized their home in the Old City on 7/11; 1 member of the displaced family was arrested by Israeli police. Israeli forces issued demolition notices for several shops in Silwan. 2 Palestinians were arrested during raids in Jabel Mukaber. Off the coast of Gaza, Israeli naval forces shot and injured 1 Palestinian fisherman with a baton round 1.5 nautical miles west of Jabalia refugee camp. Islamic Jihad secretary-general Ziyad al-Nakhalah said that the group will boycott a meeting of Palestinian factions set to take place in Cairo on 7/30 unless the PA releases members of the Palestinian resistance, including Islamic Jihad members who have been arrested in recent weeks. Israeli prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu underwent surgery to have a pacemaker fitted. Justice Minister Yariv Levin was acting prime minister during the operation. Israel’s military advocate general said that the soldiers responsible for the death of Palestinian American Omar As’ad on 1/12/22 will not be criminally prosecuted. 78-year-old As’ad died of heart failure after being arbitrarily detained and left on his stomach on the floor in a yard of an abandoned house while handcuffed, blindfolded, and gagged. The U.S. State Department said on 6/14 that it is seeking more information from Israel about the decision not to charge the soldiers. The U.S. House of Representatives passed a bill creating an ambassador-level position at the State Department focused on creating normalization deals for Israel. The bill, which passed 413-13, was co-sponsored by Democrat Ritchie Torres (D-NY) and Republican Mike Lawler (R-NY). (HA 6/13; MDW 6/14)

Amnesty International released a report on the Israeli attacks on Gaza between May 9 and May 13, calling on the ICC “to consider the applicability of the crime against humanity of apartheid within its current formal investigation.” Amnesty found that 31 Palestinians had been killed, including in unlawful killings and possible war crimes. Amnesty also found that 3 Palestinians in Gaza were possibly killed by rockets misfired by Palestinian armed groups. (AI 6/13; MEE 6/14)

In the West Bank, Israeli settlers tried to enter ‘Urif, but were repelled by Palestinians. Israeli forces razed land, uprooted 50 olive trees, and demolished 2 agricultural structures and 1 house under construction in Tuqu‘. 11 Palestinians were arrested during late-night raids in Silwad, Kifl Haris, Idhna, Hebron, and Beit Umar; 1 Palestinian was injured by live ammunition during the raid in Silwad and 1 was hit by a baton round; others suffered tear-gas related injuries during the raid in Beit Umar. Off the coast of Gaza, Israeli naval forces opened fire at Palestinian fishermen northwest of Rafah and seized 3 boats carrying 2 generators and flashlights. In Gaza, Israeli forces made incursions and leveled land east of al-Fukhari. In the Israeli-occupied Golan Heights, 1 Israeli soldier died during a military exercise involving a tank. Khalil Awawdeh suspended his over-170-day hunger strike to protest his administrative detention after Israel said it would not extend his administrative detention period beyond 10/2. Haaretz reported that Egyptian security officials had been mediating between Islamic Jihad and Israel to secure Awawdeh’s release and that talks continued for the release of Bassam al-Saadi. Their release was reportedly a demand by Islamic Jihad for agreeing to the ceasefire after Operation Breaking Dawn. Awawdeh is currently hospitalized for treatment related to his hunger strike. The Palestinian Prisoners’ Club said that more than 1,000 Palestinian prisoners would launch a hunger strike on 9/1 in protest against Israeli punitive measures against prisoners implemented since February, including limited yard time and constant transfer of prisoners. PA prime minister Mohammed Shtayyeh met with U.S. deputy assistant secretary for Israeli and Palestinian affairs Hady Amr in Ramallah.
