Occupied Palestine/Israel: At least 500 Muslim demonstrators clash with members of Temple Mount Faithful attempting to pray near al-Aqsa Mosque. Police escorting Jewish worshipers respond with tear gas and waming shots; 3 Palestinians and 3 policemen are injured. [WP 10/12] E. Jerusalem strike and Nablus march protest al-Aqsa clash [FJ 10/18]. Yigdal Shahaf dies of injuries sustained in 10/10 attack [MET 10/24]. Israeli driver shoots Palestinian youth allegedly throwing stones [FJ 10/18]. In Hebron, Muslims and Jews clash at Ibrahimi Mosque [FJ 10/18]. Employee strike at Abu Dis College of Science and Technology ends [FJ 10/18].

Other Countries: Morris Abram, head of Conference of Presidents ofMajor American Jewish Organizations, says he has pledged noninterference by U.S. Jews in intemal Israeli affairs [NYT 10/12].

Occupied Palestine/Israel: In Gaza City, protesters burn tires, throw stones at soldiers. Soldiers force merchants to open shops; curfew is lifted [LAT 10/12].

Arab World: Palestinian fighters repulse Amal attack near 'Ayn al-Hilwah; 7 are killed [WP 10/12]. Mustafa Sa'd, leader of Nasserite Popular Liberation Army, announces his forces, which are serving as buffer between Amal and Palestinian fighters, are withdrawing [WP 10/12].

Occupied Palestine/Israel: Worshippers at al-Aqsa Mosque join demonstration after noon prayers; in Nablus, troops disperse demonstration, order al-Rawda College closed until 4/24 [FJ 4/12]. Explosion causes extensive damage to new Sultan al-Atrash monument on the Golan Heights. Residents blame Israeli authorities [FJ 4/12].

Other Countries: Turkish police reporthey have foiled plan to kidnap Americans and Israelis living in Turkey and exchange them for 200 members of Islamic Jihad held in Israel [NYT 4/11].

Military Action

Arab World: Syrian military observers escort delegation of Amal officials and pro-Syrian Palestinians to Sidon in S. Lebanon for peace talks. UNRWA delivers 4 truckloads of supplies donated by Australia to Shatila refugee camp [GU 4/11]. Hizballah fighters kill 9 Israelis, wound at least 2, during attack near Qantara, inside S. Lebanon "security zone" [FJ 4/19].

Arab World: Islamic Jihad for the Liberation of Palestine withdraws offer to trade U.S. hostages for 400 Arab prisoners held in Israel [BS 2/15].

Occupied Palestine/Israel: Israeli patrols use tear gas, rubber bullets to break up demonstrations in Nablus and Ramallah, arrest 18 students during protest at Hebron University. In Majdal Shams, hundreds of Druze youths gather for rally marking 5th anniversary of imposition of Israeli law on Golan Heights; 13 are arrested following violent clashes with Israeli police, 5 Israeli police injured UP 2/21; SG 2/15].

Arab World: Amal temporarily halts siege of Rashidiyyah refugee camp, south of Tyre, to permit UNRWA food trucks and ambulance to enter camp [CSM 2/17; NYT 2/15].

Occupied Palestine/Israel: P. M. Shamir reiterates his opposition to international Middle East peace conference [NYT 2/12]. Shamir also states U.S. should continue effortso reestablish contact with Iran, indicates disapproval of Israel's role in shipping U.S. arms to Iran [WP 2/12].

Other Countries: Two of the 6 Arabs arrested in Los Angeles 1/26 on charges of membership in PFLP claim prison officials are denying them basic rights [LAT 2/12].

Military Action

Occupied Palestine/Israel: Israeli troops use tear gas and rubber bullets to break up group of approximately 120 women marching to Nablus. The women are relatives of Balatta camp youths arrested 1/20. Students at Nablus' al-Rawda College blockade campus-area roads, pelt Israeli soldiers with stones and empty bottles. Troops respond with tear gas and live ammunition; district military commander orders college closed for 2 weeks. Israeli troops arrest 30 Hebron University students after violent campus confrontation [FJ 2/13].

Arab World: Amal forces refuse to allow trucks of food to enter Burj al-Barajinah refugee camp in Beirut [IN 2/12].
