The main reason behind Rawabda's dismissal reportedly is his refusal to endorse the king's pet project to turn Aqaba into a special economic zone to attract foreign investment; Abu Raghib has been heading the task force overseeing the project. Syria's fmr. chief of staff Gen. HEkmat Shihabi leaves for the U.S. via Beirut for "medical treatment" after learning that he has been targeted in the anticorruption campaign headed by Syria's heir apparent Bashar al-Asad. Shihabi served as chief of staffor 24 yrs. and was part of Syria's delegation to talks with Israel. Analysts see the recent step-up in the anticorruption campaign as a showdown of sorts btwn. the old guard and Bashar's new guard in the run-up to the Ba'th party congress, set for 6/17, which should elect Bashar to a party post for the 1st time.
