In the West Bank, Israeli forces shot and injured a Palestinian near the West Bank separation barrier southwest of Jenin. In a separate incident, Israeli forces opened fire on Palestinians near a checkpoint by the West Bank separation barrier north by Nazlat Issa, causing 5 Palestinians to be hospitalized with gun wounds and others to suffer tear-gas related injuries. A raid by Israeli forces near Ramallah led to clashes with Palestinians; 2 Palestinians were injured by rubber-coated bullets. Israeli settlers began fencing off a piece of Palestinian-owned land in Burin. 11 Palestinians were arrested during late-night raids in and around Ramallah, Bethlehem, Nablus, and Jenin. In East Jerusalem, Israeli forces arrested 2 Palestinians: 1 during a late-night raid in Issawiyya and 1 employee of the Islamic Waqf at the Haram al-Sharif compound. The PA sent a request to Israel to allow Palestinians in East Jerusalem to be able to partake in the planned Palestinian parliamentary and presidential elections. Israeli officials said that the Israeli security cabinet would decide on the request. (HA 12/10)

The Netherlands informed the UNRWA that it will resume funding of the agency after suspending its funding on 31 July due to allegations of misconduct in UNRWA leadership. (WAFA 12/10)

Japan signed a contract to fund construction of hearing and speech units at the Maghazi Community Rehabilitation Society in Gaza amounting to $84,191. The EU contributed with $11 million to support PA payments of social allowances to vulnerable families in Gaza and the West Bank. (WAFA, WAFA 12/10)

In the West Bank, Israeli forces violently dispersed sit-in protests in Bethlehem and Tulkarm against the shooting of a photojournalist who lost his eye on 11/16; in Tulkarm, 1 Palestinian was hit by a tear gas canister to the head, 2 others were injured by live ammunition, and others suffered tear-gas related injuries. Israeli forces shot and injured a Palestinian man at a checkpoint near Tulkarm. Meanwhile, Israeli forces raided Jalazun refugee camp, leading to clashes with Palestinian students leaving an UNRWA school. 2 students were transferred to a hospital with life-threatening injuries after being hit by live ammunition. Elsewhere, Israeli forces delivered demolition notices for 1 house east of Yatta. 4 Palestinians were arrested in Silwad and al-‘Arub refugee camp. In East Jerusalem, clashes erupted between Israeli forces and Palestinians in Silwan; no injuries were reported. Israeli forces also violently dispersed a sit-in protest by Hebrew University against Israeli airstrikes on Gaza; 3 people were arrested. 1 Palestinian was killed and 3 others arrested after a car chase; Israeli police alleged that the 4 had stolen cars and were heading for Bethlehem. Israeli police first said that the man they killed was shot while in the car; later the Israeli ministry of justice said he was shot after exiting the car. In the West Bank, Israeli forces arrested 6 Palestinians during raids in and around Bethlehem, Ramallah, and Salfit. Israeli forces also seized 4 residential tents south of Hebron. Separately, Israeli forces clashed with Palestinians in Bayt Umar; 1 Palestinian was injured by a rubber-coated bullet and 1 was arrested. In East Jerusalem, 1 Palestinian was arrested during a raid in Issawiyya. In Gaza, Israeli forces opened fire on Palestinian farmlands east of Rafah and, later, east of Khan Yunis; no injuries were reported. The head of UNRWA Pierre Krähenbühl resigned after an internal investigation into his conduct found management issues. The UN secretary general’s office appointed Christian Saunders as the officer-in-charge of UNRWA. (AJ, WAFA 11/6; WAFA 11/8)

In the West Bank, Israeli force seized a vehicle near Tubas and demolished a house under construction near Nablus. Elsewhere, Israeli forces raided the office of the Union of Palestinian Women’s Committees in Hebron and seized computer hard drives. 16 Palestinians were arrested during late-night raids in and around Hebron, Bethlehem, Ramallah, Nablus, and Jenin. In East Jerusalem, Israeli forces demolished a Palestinian-owned barn in Silwan and a house under construction in al-Tur; during the latter demolition, 2 Palestinians were arrested and video shows family members who owned the property were assaulted by Israeli police. In Gaza, Israeli forces fired tear gas at Palestinian farmers east of Rafah. Separately, Israeli forces made incursions to level land east of Dayr al-Balah. Broward County in Florida unanimously passed a resolution condemning the Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions movement. The resolution argued that the demand for Right of Return effectively would destroy the State of Israel as a homeland of the Jewish people. (MDW 9/27)

In the West Bank, Israeli forces demolished part of a house, a car wash, and another small structure in al-Jib. Israeli forces also razed land and set up caravans in Huwwara. Israeli settlers set up mobile homes on Palestinian-owned land near the Maskiyot settlement in the Jordan Valley. 8 Palestinians were arrested during late-night raids in and around Salfit, Jenin, and Bethlehem. In the raid near Bethlehem, Israeli forces clashed with local residents, leaving 1 Palestinian injured by live ammunition. In East Jerusalem, Israeli forces demolished a car wash in Sur al-Bahir, a commercial structure in Bayt Hanina, and 4 commercial structures in Silwan. Several heads of international organizations such as the UN, the World Bank, and the UNRWA called for Israel to halt planned demolitions of 10 residential buildings in Sur al-Bahir in East Jerusalem. The buildings are scheduled to be demolished on 7/18. (WAFA 7/17)

U.S. special representative for international negotiations Jason Greenblatt said in an interview with PBS that he rejects the term “occupied” to describe the West Bank, saying that, “Judea and Samaria . . . is disputed” rather than occupied. Of illegal Israeli settlement, Greenblatt said, “I don’t even like the word settlement. I think it’s a pejorative term. I use the term neighborhoods and cities.” (PBS 7/17; HA 7/18)

In the West Bank, Israeli forces prevented Palestinians from making a road to their agricultural land east of Nablus. Elsewhere in the West Bank, Israeli forces arrested 11 Palestinians in and around Jenin, Nablus, Qalqilya, and Bethlehem. The raid in Jenin triggered confrontations with local Palestinians, wounding 3 of them; 2 from live ammunition, and 1 from being hit by an Israeli military vehicle. Others suffered from tear gas inhalation. An additional 13 Palestinians were arrested during late-night raids in and around Bethlehem, Hebron, Ramallah, and Jenin. Israeli settlers chopped down dozens of Palestinian-owned almond trees near Nablus. In East Jerusalem, Israeli police evicted Muslim worshippers from the al-Aqsa Mosque for the 3d day in a row. Israeli settlers with military escort also stormed the Haram al-Sharif compound to perform prayers. In Gaza, Israeli forces made incursions to level land east of Bayt Hanun. The Israeli civil administration approved 2 roads to isolated Israeli settlements in the West Bank. The construction of the roads requires the Israeli government to seize 807 dunams (200 acres) of Palestinian-owned land. The construction is scheduled to start in July. (HA 5/13)

A Qatari envoy headed by Mohammed al-Emadi arrived in Gaza to hold meetings with UN envoy Nickolay Mladenov and Hamas chief Ismail Haniyeh about the transfer of $30 million in aid. (HA 5/13)

Israeli president Reuven Rivlin granted Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu 2 additional weeks to form the next government. The extension allows Netanyahu until 29 May to form a government. (JPOST, TOI 5/13)

PLO executive committee member Hanan Ashrawi wrote on Twitter that her U.S. visa application had been rejected without any reason. In February, U.S. special representative for international negotiations Jason Greenblatt invited her to meet him at the White House as Ashrawi and Greenblatt exchanged tweets about the U.S. peace plan. The UNRWA released a statement urging donors to contribute, as UNRWA needs an additional $60 million to continue providing food for 620,000 Palestinians in Gaza. (AJ 5/13)

In the West Bank, Israeli settlers with military escort raided an archeological site near Bethlehem to perform prayers. During the raid, Israeli forces sealed off the area, impeding traffic for local Palestinians. In East Jerusalem, some 90 Israeli settlers with military escort stormed the Haram al-Sharif compound. All Gaza and West Bank crossings into Israel were closed except for medical and other emergencies for the 4th day in a row. Israeli authorities announced the closure on 5/6, citing Israeli celebrations of Memorial Day and Independence Day. Palestinians in Israel commemorated the Nakba on Israel’s Independence Day by marching to 1 of the villages that was depopulated during the Nakba. Each year, Palestinians in Israel march to 1 of the more than 140 villages that was depopulated during the Nakba. This year, they marched to Khubbayza. (HA 5/9)

At the UN, PA foreign minister Riyad al-Maliki called the U.S. peace plan “conditions for surrender” and not a plan for peace. U.S. special representative for international negotiations Jason Greenblatt was at the UN meeting. Greenblatt has been actively debunking rumors on Twitter about the U.S. peace plan and criticizing the Palestinian leadership for not engaging with the U.S.. Al-Maliki told Mondoweiss at the UN that he urged European nations to start thinking about putting sanctions on Israel, as calls for stopping settlement expansions have proven ineffective. An Egyptian security delegation arrived in Gaza to meet with Hamas leader Yahya Sinwar and other officials from Hamas and Islamic Jihad in Palestine. The officials discussed demonstrations on Nakba Day held on 15 May and efforts to ensure a relative calm. (HA 5/9)

The Lebanese president Michel Aoun said, during a meeting with a delegation from the Middle East Council of Churches, that “Lebanon would never survive if half a million Palestinian refugees and 1.6 million Syrian refugees remained in the country.” (MNA 5/10)

Canada announced that it contributed $2.4 million to the UN World Food Programme for vulnerable Palestinians in Gaza and the West Bank. New Zealand pledged $2 million for the UNRWA. (MNA, WAFA5/9)

Late at night, unidentified Palestinians launch a projectile from Gaza into southern Israel, where it lands in an open area. Gazans also fly 2 explosive devices into southern Israel using kites and balloons. Neither incident causes and damage or injuries. The Israeli Air Force retaliates with air strikes targeting Hamas sites across Gaza, causing extensive damage. Meanwhile, IDF troops violently disperse hundreds of Palestinians gathering along Gaza’s border fence late at night to set tires on fire, throw stones, and otherwise continue the Great March of Return; 1 Palestinian is critically injured. Off Gaza’s coast, Israeli naval forces open fire on Palestinian fishing boats near Bayt Lahiya, causing no damage or injuries. In the West Bank, IDF troops arrest 10 Palestinians during late-night raids near Jenin, Ramallah, Bethlehem, and Hebron; and patrol near Ramallah and Hebron. One day after an Egyptian delegation arrived in Gaza to help ease the escalating tensions between Israel and Hamas, a senior Hamas official says, “I think the Israeli side is also not interested in war on the eve of elections.” The delegation is reportedly discussing a possible cease-fire agreement, under which the Israeli authorities would increase humanitarian aid to Gaza in exchange for calm along the border fence. “The Egyptian delegation is doing everything it can to lower tension and prevent war in the Gaza Strip,” the official adds. Indonesia announces a $1 million pledge to support UNRWA. “Palestine is at the heart of Indonesia’s foreign policy, and in the heart of Indonesian people,” a senior Indonesian official says. (MNA, WAFA 3/6)

Hundreds of Palestinians gather along Gaza’s border to continue the Great March of Return near Gaza City. Amid the protests, armed Palestinians shoot and injure an Israeli soldier. Israeli artillery and air forces then strike a number of Hamas sites near al-Bureij refugee camp, Rafah, and Jabaliya refugee camp, killing 1 Palestinian and injuring at least 4 others. The incident comes hours after a similar exchange near Jabaliya, during which armed Palestinians fired on IDF positions along the border fence and Israeli tanks shelled and destroyed a Hamas post in the area. No injuries are reported in that earlier incident. Meanwhile, IDF troops stationed along the border fence open fire on Palestinian farmers working near Gaza City and Rafah, causing no damage. In 2 separate incidents off Gaza’s coast, Israeli naval forces open fire on Palestinian fishing boats near Bayt Lahiya, causing no damage or injuries. In the West Bank, IDF troops conduct raids in al-Khadir village near Bethlehem, sparking clashes with stone-throwing residents; there are no reported injuries. The IDF then temporarily seals off all the entrances to the village. IDF troops shoot and injure 3 Palestinians during similar clashes in Tell and Burin near Nablus; arrest a Palestinian minor in central Hebron when he is found to be in possession of a knife; arrest 5 more Palestinians during late-night raids in and around Hebron, Nablus, and Bethlehem; and patrol near Hebron and Nablus. Israeli forces uproot 60 olive trees in a Palestinian grove near Jerusalem and 30 more in a Palestinian grove outside Bayt Umar near Hebron. Israeli prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu suspends the planned transfer of $15 million in Qatari funds to Gaza in response to the shooting of an Israeli soldier along Gaza’s border earlier today (see above). The transfer was originally set to go forward last week, but it was temporarily postponed in response to another incident of violence along the border fence. Meanwhile, Haaretz reports that Islamic Jihad in Palestine fighters were responsible for both shooting attacks and that they were motivated, in part, by an ongoing disagreement with Hamas. Later, a Hamas official says that Netanyahu’s order to suspend the transfer constitutes a “crime” that could spark an “explosion” of violence. (TOI 1/22; HA, JP, MNA 1/23)

One day after reports of violent protests at Ofer Prison, the Israeli press reports that a number of Palestinian prisoners at Ofer are refusing meals in protest of conditions in the prison. Later in the day, Israeli prison guards raid a number of cells in Ofer, sparking a 2d day of violence; more than 100 Palestinians are injured. (EI, MNA, TOI 1/22)

UN special coordinator Nickolay Mladenov reports that UNIFIL peacekeepers have not been given access to any of the tunnels the IDF uncovered in the context of its Operation Northern Shield in late-12/2018 and earlier this month.
