Occupied Palestine/Israel: IDF spokesperson says army has drawn up long-term plan that assumes Israel will still occupy the W. Bank and Gaza in the year 2000 [WP 8/31; MET 9/12]. Israeli defense source says over the past 3 weeks IDF and Shin Bet have rounded up some 170 W. Bank Palestinians who "make up the backbone of the hard core leadership of the intifada in the W. Bank" [FBIS 9/1].

Arab World: Yasir Arafat arrives in Cairo for talks with President Hosni Mubarak and senior Egyptian officials [FBIS 8/30].

Other Countries: UN Security Council adopts resolution "deploring" Israel's deportation of Palestinians, and calls on Israel to respect the Geneva Convention in the O.T. [WP 8/31]. The resolution passes with 14 of 15 Security Council members voting for it; the U.S. abstains [FBIS 9/1; MET 9/12].

Military Action

Occupied Palestine/Israel: Two Israeli soldiers are wounded by stones in Khan Yunis. Classes for 10th and 11th grade students resume in the W. Bank. Curfew in Bayt Sahur is lifted, curfew is imposed on Dayr al-Balah. IDF Radio reports that the departure of workers for jobs in Israel is sporadic [FBIS 8/30]. Army reports 3 Katyusha rockets fired into the Galilee panhandle causing slight damage but no injuries, claims Hizballah is responsible [FBIS 8/311.

Occupied Palestine/Israel: Civil administration in Gaza reports that since beginning of intifadah (12/9/87) Beach camp has spent 190 days (not consecutive) under curfew; Jabalya 164 days; Dayr al-Balah 116 days; Khan Yunis camp 105 days; Rafah's Shabura quarter 137 days; Rafah's G and O quarters 122 days; al-Shaja'iyah 40 days [FBIS 5/3].

Other Countries: Italian parliament upgrades status of PLO to "general delegation" of Palestine; new status is below full diplomatic recognition [FBIS 5/4].

Military Action

Occupied Palestine/Israel: Palestinian stabs, kills 2 Israelis, injures 4 others in Jerusalem [FBIS 5/3, MET 5/16]. In Duhayshah troops shoot, injure at least 25 Palestinians, demolish 5 homes. At least 10 Palestinians are injured throughout O.T. [FJ 5/8]. Israeli soldier disappears north of Gaza Strip [LAT 5/8].

Arab World: Israel shells S. Lebanon village of Nabatiyyah [FBIS 5/3].

Occupied Palestine/Israel: In Ras 'Atiyyah soldiers shoot, kill 40-year-old Palestinian, injure 3. In Hebron Palestinian dies after exposure to tear gas. In Dayr al-Balah 5 Palestinians are injured during clashes with troops. During clashes in Bayt Hanun 11 Palestinians are injured. In Gaza City 5 Palestinians are injured. Israeli troops demolish or seal 16 houses in W. Bank [FJ 1/30].

Occupied Palestine/Israel: Settlers from Ariel distribute "Appeal No. 1" waming W. Bank residents against continuing the uprising. Curfews are in effect in Tulkarm, Bayt Surik, Hablah, Dhannabah, Ramin, and Maghazi, Dayr al-Balah camps [FJ 1/30].

Arab World: Israel expels 40 Lebanese from Israeli-controlled portion of southern Lebanon two days after demonstration against Israel [CSM 2/9].

Military Action

Occupied Palestine/Israel: In Gaza at least 4 Palestinians are shot, injured during confrontations with troops. In Jenin a Palestinian is shot by troops. Troops destroy 3 Palestinian homes, seal 2 [Fl 1/30].

Occupied Palestine/Israel: General strike is observed in Gaza, Bethlehem district. Curfew in Dayr al-Balah enters 11th consecutive day [FJ 1/23].

Arab World: British min. of state for foreign affairs William Waldegrave meets with PLO officials in Tunis [FJ 1/23].

Occupied Palestine/Israel: 13-year-old Palestinian girl from Nablus, 12-year-old Palestinian girl from Beach camp die from wounds received earlier in uprising [NYT 1/15, Fl 1/23]. In Jerusalem 45-year-old Palestinian dies from injuries received 1/5 [FJ 1/23]. At least 8 Palestinians are shot in Gaza [NYT 1/15]. Finance Minister Peres praises U.S. downing of 2 Libyan fighters over Mediterranean [WP 1/5]. Duhayshah enters 8th day under curfew, while Balatah camp enters 5th day under curfew [FJ 1/9].

In Nusayrat camp troops open fire, injure 3 Palestinians. 2 Palestinians are injured in Khan Yunis. Troops injure at least 3 other Palestinians throughout Gaza.
