In the West Bank, Israeli settlers raided Khalayel al-Looz near Bethlehem, causing injuries and damage to property. Israeli forces shot and killed 1 Palestinian man and injured 16 others during a late-night raid in Jenin to punitively demolish the home of a Palestinian accused of killing 3 Israelis in Tel Aviv in April. The Palestinian man killed was reportedly filming the Israeli raid with his mobile phone when he was shot in the chest. The punitive demolition was carried out with explosives and Israeli forces cleared out 29 nearby buildings before blowing up the apartment. 1 other Palestinian later succumbed to his injuries on 9/11. Israeli forces also raided Jalazun refugee camp, injuring 4 with live ammunition; 4 were arrested. Elsewhere, Israeli forces violently dispersed Palestinian protesters in al-Arroub refugee camp, injuring 1 minor with a stun grenade to his head. Israeli forces also seized 2 caravans and building equipment and demolished 2 agricultural structures and a water well in al-Khader. 16 Palestinians were arrested during late-night raids in al-Bireh, al-Lubban ash-Sharqiya, Kisan, Bethlehem, and Hebron. In Gaza, Israeli forces opened fire at Palestinian farmers east of Dayr al-Balah and Khan Yunis; no injuries were reported. Israel said it had arrested some 60 Palestinians in the West Bank and Israel who Israeli police said were suspects in weapons smuggling from Jordan to the West Bank and Israel. (HA 9/7)

In Syria, for the 2d time in a week, Israeli forces attacked Aleppo Airport, killing 3 people, wounding 5, and damaging the airstrip. The Syrian transportation ministry said the damage put the airport out of commission and that flights would be diverted to Damascus Airport. The Aleppo Airport was operating again on 9/9. Haaretz reported that the U.S. state department has ordered the U.S. embassy in Israel to investigate reports of abuse of Palestinians by the Israeli ultra-Orthodox Netzah Yehuda battalion, including circumstances of the death of Palestinian American Omar Asad, who died in the battalion’s custody in January. The ice cream company Ben & Jerry’s said it would submit an amended lawsuit against its parent company Unilever after its 1st lawsuit had been rejected by a U.S. federal court. Ben & Jerry’s is suing Unilever for selling the rights to manufacture Ben & Jerry’s ice cream to an Israeli company after Ben & Jerry’s announced it would end sales of its ice cream in West Bank settlements and stop its licensing agreement with the Israeli company to produce its ice cream in Israel. In the West Bank, Israeli forces demolished 1 Palestinian-owned home near al-Ramadin. 8 Palestinians were arrested during late-night raids in Araqah, Beit Umar, Jaba‘, and Burqin. In East Jerusalem, some 100 Israeli police officers raided the Salhiya family home in Sheikh Jarrah, throwing stun grenades and beating family members, including minors, before escorting them out and demolishing their home, displacing the family of 18; 18 Palestinians were arrested, including family members. The family members were released on 1/20 under the condition that they do not return to Sheikh Jarrah for 1 month. Israel had attempted to displace the family since 1/17, but was unable due to resistance from the family and a large presence of international diplomats and local activists. The PA called the eviction a war crime, calling on the U.S. to protect Palestinians in East Jerusalem, and the EU condemned the displacement of the family. The U.S. ambassador to the UN Linda Thomas-Greenfield said at a UN security council meeting that Israel must refrain from “demolitions, and evictions—like what we saw in Sheikh Jarrah.” At the meeting, PA foreign minister Riyad al-Maliki also called on the international community to end Israeli impunity. A representative for the Salhiya family said the family is referring the case to the ICC. 1 Palestinian family demolished their own home in Wadi al-Juz, displacing 8. In Jerusalem, Israeli police violently dispersed activists in front of Mayor Moshe Leon’s home protesting forced displacement of Palestinians in Sheikh Jarrah; 5 were arrested. Hamas officials concluded a visit to Algeria, presenting the group’s vision for national unity and reconciliation with Fatah. The delegation arrived in Algeria on 1/17. The Citizenship Law bill, created to prevent family unifications between Palestinians and Israeli citizens, was sent back to the Israeli cabinet after the Meretz party filed an objection to the legislation in the Knesset. Elsewhere, Israeli forces violently dispersed Palestinian protesters in Bayt Dajan, injuring 1 with live ammunition; others suffered tear-gas related injuries. Israeli forces also raided the home of an alleged attacker in Turmus ‘Ayya and took measurements for a punitive demolition. 6 Palestinians were arrested, including 2 during late-night raids in and around Aida refugee camp and al-‘Arub refugee camp, and 4 at checkpoints in Qalandia and Nablus. In East Jerusalem, Israeli forces attacked Palestinians at the Haram al-Sharif compound, wounding 205 Palestinians, including 88 who were hospitalized and 3 who lost eyes; 17 Israeli police officers were also reported injured. The High Follow-up Committee for Arab Citizens of Israel called on Palestinians in Israel to support Palestinians in East Jerusalem after the Israeli attacks on worshipers at the Haram al-Sharif compound and on protesters in Shaykh Jarrah. (MEMO, WAFA 5/8)

The Kahanist lawmaker Itamar Ben-Gvir from the Otzma Jehudit (Jewish Power) party closed his makeshift office on the opposite side of the street from where Palestinians have been eating iftar meals in protest over Israeli threats of evicting Palestinian families in Shaykh Jarrah. Ben-Gvir said he closed the office after Israeli prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu had requested he do so. (HA 5/7)

Palestinians reported that information shared about Shaykh Jarrah had been censored by social media companies like Instagram and Twitter and in some instances, Palestinian accounts sharing information about Shaykh Jarrah had been closed by the companies. PA president Mahmoud Abbas condemned the Israeli aggression in Jerusalem, saying he has called on the PA ambassador to the UN to request an emergency session at the UN security council. (WAFA 5/7)

A Saudi official confirmed that Iran and Saudi Arabia are in direct talks to resolve the issues between the 2 countries. (HA 5/7; MEMO 5/8)

The U.S. issued a statement saying that the country “is extremely concerned about ongoing confrontations in Jerusalem, including the Haram al-Sharif/Temple Mount and in Sheikh Jarrah, which have reportedly resulted in scores of injured people . . . It is absolutely critical that all sides exercise restraint, refrain from provocative actions and rhetoric, and preserve the historic status quo on the Haram al-Sharif/Temple Mount—in word and in practice.” The UN also warned Israel that forced evictions of Palestinians in East Jerusalem could amount to war crimes. U.S. senators Bernie Sanders (D-VT), Elizabeth Warren (D-MA), Chris Van Hollen (D-MD), and Chris Murphy (D-CT) and representatives Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY), Gregory Meeks (D-NY), Andy Levin (D-MI), Pramila Jayapal (D-WA), and Ayanna Pressley (D-MA) called on Israel not to evict Palestinians from their homes in Shaykh Jarrah. Representatives Marie Newman (D-IL) and Mark Pocan (D-WI) circulated a letter in congress calling on secretary of state Antony Blinken to pressure Israel not to move forward with the eviction and to stop home demolitions in al-Bustan. After nearly 2 weeks of tensions at Haram al-Sharif, the Israeli police overnight remove the last of the new security measures installed in the wake of the deadly attack on 7/14. Top Muslim figures, including the mufti of Jerusalem, Mohammed Hussein, certify that the situation at the sanctuary has returned to what it was prior to the attack, and call on Muslims to resume prayers at the sanctuary. They then meet with PA pres. Abbas, who says that the Palestinian leadership will continue discussing the situation before he makes a decision on resuming contacts with Israel. Meanwhile, tens of thousands of Muslims pray at the sanctuary. As the crowds enter the sanctuary, clashes break out (the Israeli police say that Palestinians threw stones at them and they responded with riot-control methods. Palestinians say that Israeli forces started firing tear gas and stun grenades unprovoked). According to the Palestinian Red Crescent, at least 94 worshippers are injured to some degree. More than 100 Palestinians are arrested. The Israeli authorities then reopen the sanctuary entrance. In the West Bank, Israeli forces install an iron gate at the entrance to Janata nr. Bethlehem and shut down the Beit El checkpoint in the wake of the unrest in Jerusalem, according to the IDF. After receiving reports of stones thrown at an Israeli settler outside Tuqu‘ nr. Bethlehem, IDF troops conduct raids in the village; there are no arrests. They arrest 2 Palestinians during further raids nr. Jenin, and patrol nr. Hebron, Qalqilya, and Salfit. In Gaza, unknown gunmen attempt to assassinate a Fatah official in Gaza City, injuring 2 of his bodyguards. In the West Bank, Israeli forces conduct raids and searches in the “Gate of Jerusalem” protest tent camp in Abu Dis, sparking clashes with Palestinian and international activists who were building concrete rooms; 4 Palestinians and 1 international are detained; several activists are lightly injured with rubber-coated metal bullets, tear gas, and stun grenades. That night, Israel Defense Forces (IDF) troops return to the camp to demolish and evacuate it, but activists begin rebuilding as soon as the soldiers leave. The camp was first set up on 2/3 to protest the Israeli govt.’s plans to displace Palestinian bedouins in the E1 area. The IDF conducts house searches and raids in 1 village each nr. Nablus and Jenin, in and around Hebron, and nr. Bethlehem, arresting 11 total, including a Palestinian Authority (PA) security officer; patrols in 3 villages nr. Tulkarm and 1 nr. Hebron.
