The Palestine Chronology

In the West Bank, Israeli settlers vandalized 3 agricultural structures in Kafr ad-Dik. Israeli settlers also stole crops in the Masafer Yatta area near Hebron. Elsewhere, Israeli settlers assaulted 1 Palestinian man in Kafr Malik. 5 Palestinians were arrested during late-night raids in al-Yamun, Bayt Qad, and al-Ayn refugee camp. In East Jerusalem, Israeli settlers toured the Haram al-Sharif compound, singing the Israeli anthem and waving Israeli flags. Israeli forces delivered demolition notices for 1 house in Silwan and 1 house in Shu‘fat refugee camp. Israel closed all crossings between Gaza, the West Bank, and Israel from 3pm for the Israeli celebrations of Memorial Day and Independence Day. The crossings are scheduled to reopen at midnight on 5/5. (HA 5/1)

Haaretz reported that the Jerusalem municipality and the Israeli ministry of tourism plans to erect a 328-foot flagpole donning the Israeli flag in Jerusalem. The flag, if the plans is carried out, will be visible in all of Jerusalem. (HA 5/3)

In the West Bank, Israeli forces demolished 2 houses in Sa‘ir, demolished residential and agricultural tents, confiscated agricultural equipment in al-Muarajat, and delivered a stop-work notice for a house under construction in Jit. 8 Palestinians were arrested during late-night raids in and around Wadi al-Far‘a, al-Yamun, Deir Abu Mash’al, and Beit Umar; 2 Palestinians were also injured by Israeli forces using live ammunition during a raid in al-Far‘a refugee camp. In East Jerusalem, 2 Palestinians were arrested in Silwan. A delegation of EU representatives, along with representatives from Norway and the UK, visited Beita, near the site where Israeli settlers established the Evyatar settlement outpost in May and where Israeli forces have killed several and injured hundreds of Palestinian protesters since its establishment. In the West Bank, Israeli forces killed 1 Palestinian man after he allegedly deliberately tried to ram his car into Israeli soldiers at a checkpoint near Bayt Awa. Israeli forces clashed with Palestinians during raids in al-Yamun, leading to tear-gas related injuries. Separately, 1 Palestinian minor was injured by live ammunition during clashes when Israeli forces raided al-‘Arub refugee camp. Israeli forces also seized tents and a solar panel west of Jericho and demolished 1 animal barn and seized water pipes in the northern Jordan Valley. Israeli settlers threw stones at Palestinian-owned vehicles near Burin. 5 Palestinians were arrested during raids in Beita and Kafr Qaddum; during 1 raid Israeli forces also seized 1 vehicle. Off the coast of Gaza, Israeli naval forces opened fire on Palestinian fishermen 3 nautical miles west of Bayt Lahiya; no injuries were reported. In Gaza, Israeli forces opened fire on Palestinian shepherds east of Dayr al-Balah and on agricultural lands east of Rafah; no injuries were reported. In Israel, Israeli forces arrested 10 Palestinian citizens of Israel in Wadi Ara who were protesting the killing of 1 Palestinian suffering from mental illness on 5/13. Occupied Palestine/Israel: In Yamun, near Jenin, 3 houses are demolished by Israeli authorities; owners are suspected of participating in demonstrations [FJ 4/10]. In Bethlehem, 10 stores are welded shut and owners' IDs confiscated because shops had opened during morning [FJ 4/10].

Arab World: Sec. of State George Shultz meets with King Hussein in Amman, flies to Damascus for talks with Pres. Hafiz al-Asad, and returns to Jerusalem [WP 4/6].

Occupied Palestine/Israel: Demonstrations are reported in several W. Bank and Gaza Strip villages and camps. In Zayat, in Tulkarm district, soldiers use live ammunition to disperse protesters, injuring 8. Curfews are in force in 6 W. Bank villages and cities as well as Qabatiyyah and Jenin camp. Balatah is under curfew for 14th consecutive day. Dayr Ghassana and Bayt Rima villages, near Ramallah, are among 6 sealed villages. Soldiers raid Sura village, near Nablus, and uproot olive trees. In Gaza Strip, curfew in Jalazun is lifted for 3 hours. In Dayr al-Balah camp, protesters stone car of settlers from Kiryat Arba; settlers flee and Palestinians burn car; camp is placed under curfew [FJ 4/10].

Arab World: In Israel's S. Lebanon security zone, Israeli soldiers kill 2 Palestinian commandos attempting to cross border. Palestine Liberation Front claims responsibility [WP 4/6].

Occupied Palestine/Israel: General strike continues in occupied territories. Def. Min. Rabin threatens to introduce additional sanctions in W. Bank and Gaza Strip. Israeli authorities close Hebron National Bus Co. for 1 week for honoring strike. Palestinian American political activist Mubarak 'Awad is arrested in Jerusalem on charges of organizing an illegal demonstration [WP 3/17]. Israel cuts phone lines to W. Bank, Gaza Strip [NYT 3/17]. Jews from Teqoa settlement attack Bethlehem-area village of Za'tara after demonstration; settlers bulldoze walls, damage water pipes, and smash windows of houses and cars before troops intervene [FJ 3/20].

Other Countries: Pres. Reagan stresses that U.S. will not change or abandon peace proposals in talks with Israeli p.m. Shamir [CSM, WP 3/17]. Shamir suggests ceremonial opening for Arab-Israeli peace talks at U.S. -Soviet summit in Moscow [LAT 3/17].

Occupied Palestine/Israel: Demonstrators in Tulkarm bum tires, block roads, and throw rocks at soldiers; troops respond with tear gas, rubber bullets, and live ammunition, killing 3 and wounding at least 12. Army is investigating whether Hebron resident was killed by tear gas inhalation or gunfire. Other Countries: Congressional committee investigating Iran-contra affair releases testimony revealing Lt. Col. Oliver North had budgeted $2.5 million to finance secret U.S.-Israel operations [WP 2/26].

Israeli soldiers use tear gas, rubber bullets, and live ammunition to disperse stone-throwing demonstrators in Jenin; 1 Palestinian is killed, at least 4 wounded [WP 2/26; FJ 2/28]. In Nablus, Palestinian youth is shot dead by army gunfire; 4 others are wounded. Soldiers raid al-Ittihad Hospital in Nablus, beating patients and staff and breaking fumiture [WP 2/26]. Jerusalem district court sentences 2 Palestinians to 18 years and 7 years imprisonment for 1986 stabbing of Jewish settler [FJ 12/6]. Israeli High Court orders Jewish settlers to return 10 of 18 rooms in Jerusalem house leased by Zurba family [FJ 12/6]. Near Duhayshah refugee camp, 2 Israelis are injured when their car is stoned [FJ 12/6].

Arab World: PLO office in Cairo reopens [FJ 12/6].

Occupied Palestine/Israel: In Nablus, 3 Palestinians are shot, wounded when Israeli soldiers open fire on demonstrators marking International Day of Solidarity with the Palestinian People. Balatah refugee camp is placed under curfew after violent demonstrations. In Hebron, many students are reported arrested after stone-throwing incident near the university. Military authorities order Agricultural Institute in Tulkarm closed for 1 week after student demonstration. In Rafah, teacher and 2 students are injured by Israeli army gunfire.
