The Palestine Chronology

Hundreds of Palestinian activists set up a tent camp they name ‘‘Bab al-Shams’’ (‘‘Gate of the Sun’’) in the area of the West Bank nr. East Jerusalem known as E1, land Israel has earmarked for further settlement development. Elsewhere in the West Bank, the IDF patrols in and around Hebron and the nearby al-‘Arub r.c., in Jenin, and in 1 village nr. Ramallah at night. Israeli soldiers attack weekly nonviolent demonstrations held by Palestinians, Israelis, and internationals in 3 villages nr. Ramallah (Bil‘in, Ni‘lin, al-Nabi Salih), 1 village nr. Bethlehem (al-Ma‘sara), and 1 village nr. Qalqilya (Kafr Qaddum). There are no serious injuries, except in al-Nabi Salih, where 1 Palestinian is wounded by a rubber-coated steel bullet. Jewish settlers from Esh Kodesh outpost destroy over 200 olive trees in Qusra village nr. Nablus. In the Gaza Strip, the IDF opens fire on Palestinians in the Israelideclared buffer zone long the border nr. Jabalya r.c., killing 1 man and wounding another. (MNA, REU 1/11; PCHR 1/17)

Hamas releases a report estimating that 885 Palestinians have been killed in Syria’s civil war, and around 20,000 Palestinians have fled to Lebanon. (Daily Star 1/11)

Unidentified Palestinians fire 2 rockets or mortars fr. Gaza into Israel, causing no damage or injuries. In the West Bank, the IDF patrols in 3 villages nr. Ramallah (2 synchronized) in the evening; conducts late-night patrols in 2 villages nr. Jenin and Jericho; and conducts late-night arrest raids, house searches in Hebron and Nablus, firing tear gas and stun grenades at stonethrowing youths who confront them in Nablus (causing no serious injuries). Palestinians (accompanied by Israeli and international activists) hold weekly nonviolent demonstrations against the separation wall, land confiscations, and settlement expansion in Bil‘in, Kafr Qaddum, al-Nabi Salih, and Ni‘lin. IDF soldiers fire live ammunition (al-Nabi Salih only), rubber-coated steel bullets, tear gas, and stun grenades at the protesters; a Palestinian child (al-Nabi Salih) and 1 Swedish activist (Kafr Qaddum) are moderately injured by tear gas canisters, and 1 Palestinian (Kafr Qaddum) is moderately injured by a rubber-coated steel bullet. Pres. Obama signs into law the U.S.-Israel Enhanced Security Cooperation Act, which calls for an unprecedented strengthening of military, intelligence, and technology cooperation intended to preserve Israel’s qualitative military edge. Experts describe the act as prescribing a ‘‘laundry list of security enhancements’’ for Israel (see QU in JPS 165 for details). (JTA, White House press release 7/27; WP 7/28, 7/30; Defense News 8/1)

Hamas acting PM in Gaza Ismail Haniyeh meets with Egyptian pres. Morsi in Cairo to discuss Fatah-Hamas reconciliation prospects and ways of further easing the siege of Gaza. (WP 7/28)

Israeli-Palestinian clashes escalate, leaving 8 Palestinians dead, including senior Islamic Jihad mbr. Sa'ir al-Khruf, who is assassinated by the IDF. (1 Palestinian dies en route to the hospital when his ambulance is detained by the IDF for over 1 hr.) In Nablus, 20,000 Palestinians attend a funeral for 3 of the dead killed overnight. Israel allows a small number of West Bank, Gaza Palestinians over age 35 to attend Friday prayers at al-Aqsa Mosque. Those that are barred scuffle with Israeli police who respond with rubber bullets, stun grenades, tear gas. The IDF also placed curfews on Salfit, Qasrah to conduct an arrest sweep. IDF directed shells, heavy machine gun fire at residential areas in Aida, Aqbat Jabir camp, Bayt Jala (damaging an elementary school), al-Bireh, Dayr al-Balah, Nablus, Ramallah (damaging the PA Local Government Min.), Tulkarm; bulldozes Palestinian agricultural land across Gaza, in Qalqilya. In Rafah, the IDF fires a shell at a family protesting the bulldozing of their land, injuring 6 children. Israel's Ben-Ami meets with Arafat at Erez to discuss resuming peace talks, holds follow-up mtg. with PA Information M `Abid Rabbuh in Tel Aviv. The State Dept. says that midlevel Israeli, PA negotiators may come top Washington the wk. of 12/18. (NYT, WP 12/16) (see 12/10)

In Gaza, over 30,000 Palestinians attend a Hamas rally in support of continuing the al-Aqsa intifada no matter what stand the PA regarding negotiations with Israel. (MEI 12/22)

Occupied Palestine/Israel: Curfews continue in Tulkarm, al-Am'ari, and Qalandiya camps, Dannabah, and Qalqiliyyah [FJ 9/ 25].

Military Action

Occupied Palestine/Israel: In Burayj camp soldiers shoot, kill 17-year-old Palestinian; 15 Palestinians are injured by live ammunition; at least 70 are shot with rubber bullets. In Khan Yunis 3 Palestinians are shot; in Nusayrat 1 Palestinian is shot; in Beach camp 5 Palestinians are shot; in Balatah one Palestinian is shot; in Nablus one Palestinian is shot [FJ 9/25].

Occupied Palestine/Israel: Hamzah Turkmani resigns as mayor of Gaza City [WP, NYT 3/27]. Palestinian shot by Israeli troops 3/25 in clash in Zawata village near Nablus dies of wounds [WP, NYT 3/27]. Military administration orders all government and UNRWA schools in Gaza Strip closed [FJ 4/3].

Other Countries: Sec. of State Shultz meets with 2 PNC members, Prof. Edward W. Said and Prof. Ibrahim Abu-Lughod, to discuss his peace proposals [WP 3/27].

Occupied Palestine/Israel: In al-Birah Israeli soldiers fire tear gas, rubber bullets, and live ammunition to disperse Palestinian protesters demanding city council resign [WP 3/27]. Troops clash with Palestinian demonstrators in Kafr Thulth village near Nablus; 2 Palestinians are shot dead [WP, NYT 3/27]. At least 3 Palestinians are wounded by army gunfire in clash at Dhahariyyah. UN officials report at least 6 children suffered fractured limbs in Burayj refugee camp [WP 3/27]. Curfew continues in Balatah refugee camp. Palestinian sources report demonstrations also erupted in Bethlehem and Nablus [FJ 4/3].

Arab World: Battles between Fateh and Fateh Revolutionary Council (Abu Nidal organization) forces continue in S. Lebanon's 'Ayn al-Hilwah refugee camp; Lebanese police report 5 have been killed, 4 wound in clashes [NYT 3/27].

Other Countries: Congressional committee investigating Iran-contra affair releases testimony revealing Lt. Col. Oliver North had budgeted $2.5 million to finance secret U.S.-Israel operations [WP 2/26].

Occupied Palestine/Israel: Military raids Qabatiyyah, arrests at least 100 villagers, destroys 2 houses [NYT 2/26]; village remains under curfew [FJ 2/28]. Israeli soldiers use tear gas, rubber bullets, and live ammunition to disperse stone-throwing demonstrators in Jenin; 1 Palestinian is killed, at least 4 wounded [WP 2/26; FJ 2/28]. In Nablus, Palestinian youth is shot dead by army gunfire; 4 others are wounded. Soldiers raid al-Ittihad Hospital in Nablus, beating patients and staff and breaking fumiture [WP 2/26]. Soldiers clash with Palestinian protesters in E. Jerusalem neighborhoods. At least 5 are wounded during clashes in Tulkarm, Balatah refugee camp, and Yatta village near Hebron [NYT 2/26]. Demonstrations are also reported in 'Ayn Bayt al-Ma', Ramallah, Mazra'ah al-Nubani village, 'Anata, Ram village, and Jabalya camp [FJ 2/28]. Yamun village and Nusayrat, Burayj, Beach, Jalazun, and Am'ari camps are under curfew [FJ 2/28].

Occupied Palestine/Israel: In al-Birah, firebomb attack on car seriously injures Jewish settler [WP 2/2; FJ 2/7]. Commercial strike in E. Jerusalem, W.Bank, and Gaza Strip continues [FJ 2/7]. Hebron U. reopens [FJ 2/7]. Other Countries: Charles Hill, executive assistant to U.S. Sec. of State Shultz, holds talks with Nimrod Novik, senior advisor to F. M. Peres [NYT 2/2].

Military Action

Occupied Palestine/Israel: Troops use tear gas, rubber bullets to break up rockthrowing demonstrations i Bethlehem, Hebron, Gaza Strip, and E. Jerusalem. Dayr al-Balah and Balatah are placed under curfew [LAT 2/2]. At least 42 Palestinians are shot, injured by soldiers during fierce battles in Nablus. Curfew isimposed on Nablus and Jalazun, 'Ayn Bayt al-Ma', and old and new 'Askar camps. Village of Ithna, near Hebron, is declared closed military area. Violent demonstrations are reported in Ramallah, al-Birah, Bayt Sahur, and Am'ari camp [FJ 2/7].

Military Action:

IDF begins pulling out troops from West Beirut under mounting world pressure; thousands of Palestinians flee camps in panic, fearing return of Phalange/Haddad militias to camps following IDF withdrawal, before Lebanese Army can restore calm; Phalange and Haddad forces sighted setting up own roadblocks in West Beirut.

Casualties:

Red Cross continues to recover bodies, 130 recovered so far, no mass graves opened yet.

Palestinians/ Lebanese: Palestine Central Council ends one-day meeting with statement condemning Israeli role in massacre, blaming Lebanese Army, US, France and Italy, and pledges to avenge killings; Camille Chamoun withdraws from race for Lebanese presidency as it becomes clear Amin Gemayel has votes to win.

Arab Governments: Egypt recalls ambassador to Israel but does not break diplomatic relations; Jordan's King Hussein accuses Israel of responsibility for massacre but urges positive Arab response to Reagan proposals, calls on PLO to join him to draw up federation plan along lines of Reagan proposal; emergency Arab League meeting in Tunis called at request of PLO delayed until tomorrow.
