Off the coast of the Gaza Strip nr. alSudaniyya, Israeli naval forces open fire on Palestinian fishermen, causing no damage or injuries. In the West Bank, the IDF conducts house searches and arrest raids in Nablus and the nearby ‘Ayn Bayt al-Ma’ r.c. at night. Israeli settlers attack a Palestinian nr. Nablus, injuring him. Responding to the 9/5 killing nr. Adlun village and the 10/5 attack nr. Shaba‘ Farms in s. Lebanon, Hizballah fighters attack an Israeli military position along the border, injuring 2 IDF soldiers with an explosive. In response, the IDF fires at Hizballah positions, with no reports of damage or casualties. (AFP, AP 10/7; REU 10/8)

In the West Bank, the IDF conducts house searches and arrest raids in Hebron and 2 nearby villages, and 1 village each nr. Ramallah and Salfit; patrols in 4 villages nr. Ramallah, 2 villages nr. Hebron, 1 village nr. Jericho and in Salfit. Also, IDF troops violently disperse Palestinian, Israeli, and international protesters at weekly demonstrations against Israel’s separation wall, settlements, and occupation in 4 villages nr. Ramallah (Bil‘in, Nabi Salih, Nil‘in, and Wadi Fukin), and 1 village nr. Qalqilya (Kafr Qaddum). There are no serious injuries. At an anti-occupation protest in Silwad nr. Ramallah, IDF troops shoot and injure 4 Palestinians with live ammunition. (PCHR 9/11)

U.S. and Iranian officials meet for a 2d day of talks in Geneva, with the teams led by Dep. Secy. of State William Burns and Under Secy. of State Wendy Sherman, and Iran’s Dep. FM Abbas Araghchi, respectively. Separately, a report by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) leaked to the press says that Iran has failed to address concerns about suspected atomic bomb research. Tehran has reportedly only implemented 3 out of 5 agreed transparency steps. (AFP, AP, REU 9/5)

PM Rabin reiterates offer to Syria of  "very small" withdrawal fr. Golan in exchange for 3-yr. period to "test" full normalization, open border, exchange of embassies. Pres. al-Asad rejects proposal again, encourages U.S. to offer new ideas to activate talks. Annual IDF intelligence assessment is presented to Israeli cabinet. Report is pessimistic about securing peace with Syria, says Arafat is not asserting his authority in Gaza, finds probability for war low but says violent acts will likely increase. Social/Economic/Political Occupied Palestine/Israel: Nablus prison inmates begin hunger strike to protest prison conditions. Kahane's incitement turns rite to bury Jewish religious articles in Hebron into rally for massive settlement of "greater Israel." Israel Treasury source says aid request from US for 1985 will be $5 billion.

Arab World: Addressing African-Arab Solidarity Conference in Tunis, Chrmn. Arafat calls for rigorous opposition to US policies in Middle East & Africa. IDF called mtg. of Tyre fishermen to ration out 400 fishing licenses.

Occupied Palestine/Israel: 20 Gilo settlers evict nearby Salman family at gunpoint from their home, then bulldoze it. 62-yr.- old Palestinian woman dies of heart attack while pleading with IDF soldiers tying to trees and beating 3 of her relatives working in Heletez settlement.

Arab World: IDF bulldozers seal off Adloun village surrounding it with earthen wall.

Military Action:

Commander of IDF-backed local militia in Adloun, South Lebanon, killed by car bomb, PLO says Lebanese and Palestinian resistance is responsible.

Casualties:

IDF arrests 40 suspects after Adloun bombing; Sidon mayor estimates that 10,000 refugees from fighting to the north are sheltering in public buildings; export trade from Israel to Lebanon, about $ 10m monthly, reportedly returns to normal after cease-ffre.

Israel/ Occupied Territories: 100th reserve soldier jailed for refusing to serve in Lebanon.

Palestinians/ Lebanese: Arafat accuses Syria and US of secret pact to eliminate PLO from Lebanon.

Casualties:

54 Palestinian middle class families from northeast Sidon, 15 families from central Sidon, 73 families of orchard workers in Adloun, 8 families from village of Kaddousieh have fled to Ain el-Hilweh camp in past week in response to Phalangist campaign of intimidation.
