In the West Bank, Israeli settlers physically assaulted 3 Palestinians, with 1 Palestinian suffering a fractured arm, near al-Tha‘ala in the Masafer Yatta area; Israeli forces that intervened gave 1 of the Israeli settlers the club back to him that he used to attack the Palestinians after separating the 2 sides. Israeli forces shot and injured 1 Palestinian minor with a rubber-coated bullet in Beit Umar. Israeli forces also shot and injured 2 Palestinian minors during a late-night raid in al-Bireh. 6 Palestinians were arrested during late-night raids in Sa‘ir and Qalqilya. Israel’s Central Command extended defense minister Benny Gantz’s order to declare 6 Palestinian rights organizations “terror groups,” from 10/22, to the West Bank. The extension to the West Bank, where the 6 Palestinian rights organizations operate, means that the Israeli military will be able to arrest their employees, raid their offices, and confiscate their equipment. According to statistics from the Israeli ministry of defense, 8 Palestinians have been killed in 2021 during protests in the West Bank by Israeli soldiers using the Ruger rifle, which Israel uses as a crowd-dispersal tool. In comparison, 1 Palestinian was killed by Israeli soldiers using the Ruger rifle in 2020 and a total of 12 were killed by soldiers using the rifle between 2016 and 2021, according to the Israeli  data. The statistic was released as part of a parliamentary question by Gaby Lasky of Meretz (Vigor), who argued that Israeli forces should stop using the weapon at Palestinian demonstrations. (HA 11/7)

In Iraq, unknown perpetrators tried to assassinate Iraq’s prime minister Mustafa al-Kadhimi at his residence in Baghdad. Prime Minister al-Kadhimi was unharmed, but 6 members of his security force were injured. (AJ, ALM, AP, MEE, MEE, MEMO, REU, WAFA 11/7; MEMO, REU 11/8)

IDF troops on the s. Gaza border fatally shoot a Palestinian nr. the border, claiming that he attempted to fire on them. The Israeli navy diverts a Lebanese cargo ship (organized by Lebanese politicians and human rights groups) en route to Gaza to an Israeli port and detains the crew of 20, including an al-Jazeera reporter. After confirming that the cargo contained only food, medicine, bedding, and toys, Israel agrees to transport the aid to Gaza. Israel, which has been allowing only very limited amounts of cooking gas and fuel for Gaza’s electricity plant into Gaza, cuts off fuel deliveries without comment but allows 114 truckloads of humanitarian aid and commercial goods into Gaza. In the West Bank, IDF undercover units make an early morning raid on a home in Qabatya, fatally shooting Islamic Jihad mbr. Ala’ Abu al-Rub in an apparent assassination. In Gaza, 2 armed Palestinians representing the Fatah-linked al-Aqsa Martyrs Brigade (AMB) and the Popular Resistance Comms. (PRCs; an umbrella group including mbrs. of all factions) infiltrate the Israeli border, open fire with automatic weapons at the IDF post at Erez crossing, lightly wounding 2 soldiers before being shot dead. The IDF directs heavy machine gun fire at Palestinian homes in al-Shuka, makes several air strikes on the area during the day, wounding 1 Palestinian. Hamas mbrs. detonate a roadside bomb under an IDF vehicle patrolling the Gaza border nr. alShuka, causing no injuries. In the West Bank, the IDF sends undercover units into Jenin in cars with Palestinian license plates, ambushing and assassinating Islamic Jihad mbrs. Ala’ Sorour and Mustafa Atiq, wounding 3 other Islamic Jihad mbrs.; conducts arrest raids, house searches in and around Jenin town and r.c., nr. Hebron. Jewish settlers fr. Kiryat Arba in Hebron attack a Palestinian home in an area previously targeted by settlers for confiscation. Overnight, the IDF revives Operation Hot Winter (see 3/1) in Nablus, conducting major house searches, arresting 2 Palestinians but withdrawing in the morning. During the day, IDF troops on the s. Gaza border fire on Palestinian farmers who stray near the border fence e. of al-Qarara, causing no injuries; later sends tanks, bulldozers across the border in the same area to level land, discovering and dismantling 2 roadside bombs. Late in the evening, the IDF conducts arrest raids, house searches in and around Hebron, and nr. Bethlehem, Ramallah. Jewish settlers fr. Avraham Avino attack Palestinian workers repairing a Palestinian home nearby; the IDF observes but does not intervene. Jewish settlers fr. Ramat Yishai vandalize Palestinian homes nearby. A Palestinian gunman fires on a Jewish settler vehicle driving on the Itamar settlement bypass road nr. Nablus, wounding 1 settler. In Gaza City, suspected Fatah gunmen assassinate Izzeddin al-Qassam Brigades cmdr. Ala’ al-Haddad; late in the evening, the ESF fires an RPG destroying a house in Gaza City in apparent retaliation. Fatah-ESF clashes escalate in Bayt Hanun, with ESF mbrs. firing an RPG at the home of a Fatah mbr. and Fatah mbrs. retaliating by firing an RPG at the home of a Hamas mbr.; 3 Palestinians are injured. Hamas spokesman Ghazi Hamad says that the PA has definite information about who kidnapped BBC corresponded Johnston on 3/12, indicating that they are mbrs. of the powerful Daghmash clan, which is involved in criminal activity and was responsible for the abduction of 2 Fox News journalists on 8/27/06; says the government is working to secure his release. In the West Bank, the IDF sends undercover units into Jenin to ambush, assassinate 3 Islamic Jihad mbrs. (West Bank military cmdr. Ashraf Saadi, senior Saraya al-Quds mbr. Mahmud Abu Naa’sa, lower ranking mbr. Ala’ Baryaki). The IDF also sends troops back into Nablus, reviving Operation Hot Winter, reimposing a curfew, reoccupying TV and radio stations, announcing the names of 7 wanted Palestinians being sought; 1 IDF soldier is wounded by a bomb; the IDF reportedly uses an 11-yr.- old Palestinian girl and a 15-yr.-old Palestinian boy as human shields when searching Palestinian homes. The IDF demolishes 2 apartment buildings under construction in al-Tur nr. Jerusalem; conducts arrest raids, house searches in and around Tulkarm r.c., nr. Jenin and Salfit; uproots some 500 Palestinian olive, almond trees nr. Bethlehem for construction of the separation wall, replanting some nearby. In response to the Jenin assassinations, Islamic Jihad fires 5 rockets fr. Gaza into Israel, causing no damage or injuries. Separately, Palestinians fire 2 rockets fr. Gaza toward Israel, but both fall inside Gaza nr. Bayt Hanun. Jewish settlers nr. Shema nr. Hebron stone a 70-yr.-old Palestinian farmer grazing his flock nr. the settlement. In Gaza, Fatah mbrs. manning a flying checkpoint nr. Shati’ r.c. bar an ESF vehicle from passing, sparking an exchange of fire that leaves 1 Fatah mbr. wounded. In Gaza City, a bomb explodes outside the offices of the Fatah-affiliated al-Fursan al-Arab Association, causing no injuries; no group takes responsibility. The IDF pulls most troops out of Bayt Hanun before dawn; bulldozers and tanks remain positioned nr. Bayt Lahiya. Clashes continue in Jabaliya during the day, leaving at least 8 Palestinians dead, including an AMB mbr. assassinated in an air strike on his car in n. Gaza (3 AMB mbrs. are wounded), 2 Islamic Jihad mbrs. nr. Bayt Lahiya, the sister-in-law of Change and Reform PC mbr. Jamila al-Shanti (who helped organize the 11/3 women’s demonstration in Bayt Hanun), 2 Palestinians affiliated with Hamas are killed in Jabaliya r.c. when the IDF fires tank shells at Palestinians who allegedly fired RPGs fr. Shanti’s home, a Palestinian civilian fatally shot nr. Bayt Lahiya. IDF air strikes destroy the Gaza City home of a senior Hamas military cmdr., damage several neighboring homes after ordering the residents to leave. A Palestinian wounded in Bayt Hanun on 11/6 dies. Palestinians fire 6 rockets fr. Gaza into Israel (4 hitting nr. Ashkelon), causing no damage or injuries; IDF artillery shells Bayt Hanun in response. The IDF says it seized “large amounts of weaponry” during the operation, including rocket launchers, RPGs, mines, rifles, ammunition but no rockets or antitank weapons. The UN estimates that some 250 Palestinians were wounded, 30 Palestinian homes demolished, 100 damaged (residents put the number at around 40 demolished, 400 damaged), water and sewerage systems damaged, large tracks of trees uprooted during the operation. In the West Bank, the IDF sends undercover units into Qalqilya (in a car with Palestinian license plates to arrest several wanted Palestinians, wounding 1), al-Yamun nr.
