In Gaza, 2 Palestinians were killed and 17 were injured during the fourth day in a row of Israeli airstrikes. Israeli forces assassinated Islamic Jihad military leader Iyad al-Hassani, killing 1 other Islamic Jihad member and injuring 6 others, including 2 children, in airstrikes on an apartment building in Gaza City. 1 Palestinian was injured in an airstrike on a house in Rafah. 10 Palestinians were injured in an airstrike near al-Aqsa Hospital in Dayr al-Balah, including 3 inside the hospital. 1 primary health care center in Khan Yunis was also damaged in airstrikes. Rockets were launched at Israel; no injuries were reported. In the West Bank, Israeli settlers shot and injured 1 Palestinian during a settler raid in Silwad. The Israeli military said that the settler was an off-duty soldier and was arrested. Israeli forces violently dispersed Palestinians protesting Israeli attacks on Gaza in al-Arroub refugee camp, injuring 4 with live ammunition and others with tear gas. Israeli forces also shot and injured 3 Palestinians with live ammunition during a raid in ‘Azzun. Elsewhere, Israeli forces violently dispersed a funeral procession in Beit Umar, leading to tear-gas related injuries. Israeli forces also violently dispersed Palestinian protesters in Kafr Qaddum, injuring 1 with live ammunition, 2 with baton rounds, and others with tear gas. Gisha and Physicians for Human Rights urged Israeli defense minister Yoav Gallant to open the Erez crossing to allow medical evacuations as more than 292 Palestinian have been prevented from receiving medical treatment, including 15 who are in need of immediate treatment for cancer and heart conditions. In the West Bank, Israeli settlers attacked 1 Palestinian shepherd in Ein al-Beida. Israeli forces shot and killed 1 man protesting soldiers beating his son who was arrested during a house raid in Qalandia. The Palestinian man’s wife said her husband had gone outside to stop the soldiers’ assault on their son when he was shot and killed. Israeli forces also shot and killed 2 Palestinians and injured 7 others during a raid in Qabatiya. Elsewhere, Israeli forces demolished 1 agricultural structure in Duma. Israeli forces also issued an eviction notice to a family in Hajja in preparation for a punitive demolition. 20 Palestinians were arrested during late-night raids in Qalandia refugee camp, Dheisheh refugee camp, ad-Doha, al-Baqa‘a, and Qalqilya. In East Jerusalem, Israeli settlers wrote hateful graffiti aimed at Christians on the walls of the Armenian Orthodox Patriarchate building in the Old City. Israeli forces raided the home of PA governor of Jerusalem Adnan Ghaith, informing him that his ban on contacting PA officials and entering the West Bank had been extended for 6 months. Peace Now and Bimkom said that a clause in the Likud Party and Religious Zionism Party coalition agreement could see Israel seize 13,000 dunams (3,250 acres) of Palestinian-owned land in the West Bank and 70 buildings in Hebron transferred to settlers as Israel claims that the land and buildings were owned by Jewish people before 1948. The land Israel intends to seize is located near Bethlehem, Nabi Samwil, Battir, and Beit Furik, including land in Area B. (HA 1/12)

PA prime minister Mohammad Shtayyeh met with U.S. special representative for Palestinian affairs Hady Amr in Ramallah. Prime Minister Shtayyeh urged the U.S. to act quickly to end Israeli measures to weaken the PA and undermine the 2-state solution. (WAFA 1/12)

IDF operations continue in Khan Yunis, where 2 Palestinians are killed in an explosion at the home of a leading Hamas mbr.; Palestinians say IDF tanks shelled the house, whereas the IDF says the men were preparing a bomb that exploded prematurely. The IDF withdraws fr. Khan Yunis late in the day, pledging to return as necessary to halt rocket fire, calling the open-ended operation Operation Violet Iron. The IDF turns over security control of Bethlehem to the PA security forces btwn. Christmas Eve and Armenian Christmas on 1/19; says it will give IDF soldiers manning checkpoints around Bethlehem special instructions on how to handle Christian tourists. The IDF tightens Palestinian movement around Nablus; fires on residential areas of Bayt Hanun (among the injured are children ages 2, 11, 14), Rafah; conducts arrest raids, house searches in Qalqilya and nr. Hebron, Nablus, Tulkarm. Palestinians fire at least 12 mortars at Jewish settlements in s. Gaza, causing minor damage but no injuries. The IDF, Palestinian officials open talks on ending the Church of the Nativity siege; 3 Armenian Orthodox monks surrender, leave their dormitory in the church complex. A Hamas suicide bomber (a Jenin resident) detonates a device on a bus in Haifa, killing 4 IDF soldiers, 4 Israeli civilians, wounding 14. In Jenin, the IDF bulldozes "whole stretches" of Palestinian homes in the area where 13 soldiers were killed on 4/9; unconfirmed reports accuse the IDF of burying bodies during the demolitions to hide evidence of a massacre. Villages around Jenin reportedly have taken in 1,000s of Palestinians fleeing the camp in recent days. In Nablus, medical workers say 11 Palestinians were killed in overnight clashes with the IDF, another 63 injured, bringing the toll since the incursion in the city began to around 60; the IDF destroys 4 alleged bomb-making factories, then pulls back fr. the old city market area, eases attacks in Nablus and nearby al-`Ayn r.c. (where 25 homes reportedly have been destroyed), calls on survivors to surrender. In Bethlehem, the IDF shoots, wounds an Armenian monk standing at the window of his room in the Church of the Nativity complex; shoots dead 2 Palestinians who attempt to sneak out of the church to get food, medicine for those inside. Israel rejects an appeal by the Vatican, Greek Orthodox Church, Armenians for a "safe conduct" agmt. to end the standoff. The IDF bars a UN relief convoy fr. bringing food, emergency supplies into Ramallah.
