In the West Bank, Israeli settlers raided Palestinian homes in Birin, causing damage. Israeli settlers also stopped 3 Palestine TV journalists while driving near Bittin, forcing them out of their car and beating them, causing bruising. Israeli forces shot and injured 1 Palestinian with live ammunition during a raid in Tubas. Israeli forces also violently dispersed Palestinian protesters in Burqa, causing tear-gas related injuries. Elsewhere, Israeli forces violently dispersed Palestinians throwing stones at a checkpoint near al-Arroub refugee camp, causing tear-gas related injuries. Israeli forces shot and killed 2 Israeli forces in a friendly fire incident in the Jordan Valley, believing the 2 were Palestinians. 9 Palestinians were arrested during late-night raids in ‘Askar refugee camp, Qabatiya, Qatanna, and Zeita. In East Jerusalem, 1 Palestinian demolished his own store under construction in Shu‘fat refugee camp. 2 Palestinians were arrested during late-night raids in Isawiya. In the Naqab desert, Israeli forces violently dispersed Palestinian protesters near Sawa, injuring 3 and arresting 13; it was the 4th day in a row that Palestinians have protested a forestation program in the Naqab designed to displace Bedouins. Israeli Channel 13 News reported that Israeli foreign minister Yair Lapid met with PA intelligence chief Majed Faraj in the days after PA president Mahmoud Abbas met with Israeli defense minister Benny Gantz, at Gantz’s home on 12/28/2021. Israeli sources said that Lapid and Faraj only talked about economic and security issues. (HA 1/13)

Members of the Jewish National Fund’s executive board called a meeting to gain clarification about why it had not been consulted about the forestation project in the Naqab that had led to large protests from Palestinians due to the displacement of Bedouins in the area. (HA 1/13)

The Citizen Lab said it had found NSO Group’s Pegasus spyware on dozens of phones belonging to Salvadorian journalists and human rights activists. The spokesperson of Salvadorian president Nayib Bukele said that El Salvador is not a client of NSO group. (AJ, AP, HA 1/13)

Israel carries out 3 air strikes (drone and warplanes) targeting Palestinian rocket-launching teams and smuggling tunnels on the Rafah border, killing 1 armed Palestinian and 1 tunnel worker and wounding 6 Palestinians (including 1 child). Occupied Palestine/Israel: Israel plans to increase aid to El Salvador, now that a Salvadoran ambassador has been named to the disputed Israeli capital of Jerusalem [CT 2/20].

Arab World: Yasir Arafat meets with top aides in Baghdad to discuss implications of King Hussein's 2/19 speech [JP 2/21].

Other Countries: U.S. State Dept. issues statement blaming breakdown of talks between King Hussein and Yasir Arafat on the PLO, says it will continue efforts to encourage direct negotiations between Jordan and Israel, although process is entering "period of reflection" [LT, WP 2/21].

Arab World: Israeli army clashes with Lebanese guerrillas in S. Lebanon; 1 Israeli, 8 Lebanese killed [NYT, LAT 2/21]. Lebanese sources state Israeli army has rounded up 200 people during search [NYT 2/21].

Occupied Palestine/Israel: 2 more suspects arrested (one Kiryat Arba security officer) in connection with bus bombing plot (4/27/84). When asked in interview if practice of demolishing homes of terrorists will be applied to Jews, DM Arens refuses comment, but admits existence of "legal anomoly."

Arab World: Chrmn. Arafat tells Kuwait newspaper al-Qabas of hopes to establish base in Egypt. Lebanon announces formation of new national unity gov't.; Shi'ite leader Berri refuses to join cabinet, criticizing lack of important Druze and Shi'ite role.

Other Countries: Swiss Socialist Party issues May Day statement of full support and sympathy for the PLO and its struggle (as well as freedom movements in El Salvador, Turkey & for Polisario); Zionist MP Hurvitz resigns from Swiss parliament and Socialist Party in protest.

Other Countries: Egypt breaks diplomatic relations with El Salvador and Costa Rica in response to transfer of their embassies to Jerusalem. Bonn's Dep. FM Moellemann calls for new EEC Middle East peace initative.

Other Countries: Haaretz reports Israeli FM Kimche to visit US to discuss establishing special fund for Israeli assistance to Central American countries. 15-member Islamic Conference Organization committee to safeguard Islamic and Arab character of Jerusalem announces Islamic countries will break relations with Costa Rica and El Salvador for locating their embassies in Jerusalem. Reagan admin. warns Eastern bloc gov'ts. relations with US cannot improve if they continue support for Palestinians and other "international terrorists."

UN: Secretary General Perez de Cuellar says Lebanon seeks to expand role of UNIFIL, calls for renewal of UNIFIL mandate, (UNIFIL troops now excluded from Sidon and Tyre), expresses concern over $152 million shortfall in UNIFIL financing.

Military Action:

Lebanese cease-fire shattered as Israeli troops move on Baabda to control Beirut-Damascus highway and close last exit from city; repeated Israeli air strikes against Beirut; fierce fighting south of city; Israeli troops advance to within yards of Lebanese presidential palace (no fighting with Lebanese Army reported, as well as no resistance from units guarding Baabda); Palestinian camps and neighborhoods hit for seventh day, as well as Beirut Barbir district (not a Palestinian area, it suffers many casualties); Israel claims hundreds of PLO guerrillas surrender south of Beirut near Khalde; battles go on in Ain el-Hilweh refugee camp outside Sidon; Israeli ship intercepts Lebanese passenger ship leaving Beirut, diverts it to Haifa.

Syrian units hit by Israelis along highway, despite cease-fire; Syrians disappear from Beirut streets, leaving Palestinian units in their place.

Casualties:

Israel/Occupied Territories: Some Israelis feel US troops in Lebanon would restrict Israeli moves, give de facto US recognition to the PLO on a day-to-day basis; Israel announces revenue-raising measures to pay for the war (costs estimated at $600 m. and may fuel inflation); as condition for withdrawal, Israel demands removal of Palestinian and Syrian forces from Lebanon, an internationally su-pervised demilitarized zone to guarantee security of Galilee; Israeli philanthropist Abie Nathan announces plans to take chocolate to Palestinian children as other Israelis offer to help rebuild Lebanon; several hundred Israelis demonstrate against invasion, massacre of civilians.
