In the West Bank, Israeli settlers set up tents and caravans in ‘Ayn al-Sakut. Israeli forces shoot and injure a Palestinian man during a raid in Birzeit. Israeli forces also demolish 3 homes in al-Jiftlik and 1 in Furush Beit Dajan. Elsewhere, Israeli forces issue stop-work notices for 3 agricultural structures near Bethlehem. In East Jerusalem, Israeli forces prevent hundreds of Palestinians from entering the Haram al-Sharif compound for the first Ramadan prayers. In Gaza, Israeli forces bomb Gaza City, Beit Lahiya, Dayr al-Balah, Rafah, Nuseirat refugee camp, and Khan Yunis, killing at least 83 people. An Israeli soldier is killed in combat. In Lebanon, Hezbollah forces attack 12 Israeli positions in Ramya, Birkat Risha, and Shebaa Farms. More than 31,045 Palestinians have been killed by Israeli forces in Gaza, including at least 13,400 children and 8,900 women, and around 72,654 have been injured since 10/7/2023. At least 7,000 people are missing in rubble, including 1,700 children. 417 Palestinians have been killed by Israeli forces and settlers in the West Bank and East Jerusalem since 10/7/2023, including 108 children. More than 4,665 people have been injured. Israel reports that 1,139 Israelis and foreign nationals have been killed and 5,400 have been injured in Israel since 10/7/2023, including Israeli soldiers. In addition, 247 Israeli soldiers have been killed and 1,469 injured in Gaza since the ground invasion began on 10/27/2023. Over 1.93 million Palestinians, nearly 85% of the population of Gaza, have been displaced since 10/7/2023. There has been a complete electricity blackout in Gaza since 10/12/2023 due to the Israeli blockade. At least 70,000 housing units have been destroyed and 290,000 have been damaged in Israeli airstrikes since 10/7/2023, constituting over 60% of all housing units. 109 trucks carrying aid enter Gaza. In response to reports that Israel is trying set up a government in Gaza and is looking for Palestinians to work with on aid deliveries, Hamas warns that it will not tolerate people collaborating with Israel. Hamas political leader Ismail Haniyeh says in a speech that Israel is responsible for a ceasefire agreement not being reached. Haniyeh also says that unity is needed for the Palestinian people and that it will be achieved by the rebuilding of the PLO, the establishment of a temporary national consensus government, and an agreement of an overall political program that is based on the end of the occupation of the West Bank and Gaza, the establishment of a Palestinian state with Jerusalem as the capital, and the right of return for refugees. Israeli prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s office releases a statement saying he has instructed his defense, national security, and finance ministers to open up space for thousands of new Palestinian prisoners. Israel’s Army Radio says Israel will deploy 15,000 extra soldiers in the West Bank and East Jerusalem. In an interview with the German media company Axel Springer, Netanyahu says that Israel has killed at least 13,000 militants in Gaza and that the military will invade Rafah. In the West Bank, Israeli forces shot and killed 2 Palestinians, including a child, during a raid in Fawwar refugee camp. Israeli forces also raided Nur Shams refugee camp for 9 hours using 40 armored vehicles, demolishing 3 homes. Elsewhere, Israeli forces demolished 5 homes in Furush Beit Dajan, displacing 70 people. 55 Palestinians were arrested during raids in and around Nablus, Tubas, and Tulkarm, including former PLC member Khalida Jarrar. In East Jerusalem, Israeli authorities forced 3 Palestinian families to demolish their own homes in Jabel Mukaber and Shu’fat. In Gaza, telecommunications were down throughout Gaza. Israeli forces bombed Khan Yunis, Rafah, al-Bureij refugee camp, Nuseirat refugee camp, Gaza City, and Maghazi, killing dozens of people, including at least 100 in Maghazi. Israeli forces also directly hit the Palestinian Red Crescent Society’s headquarters in Khan Yunis, causing damage. Israel said it had assassinated Hamis al-Najar, a member of the Hamas Legislative Council, in an airstrike in Khan Yunis that also killed his wife, 2 children, and several of his grandchildren. 3 Israeli soldiers were killed in combat. In Lebanon, Israeli forces attacked several sites and Hezbollah injured 9 Israeli soldiers using anti-tank missiles. In the Red Sea, a drone was shot down near Dahab, Egypt. PA president Mahmoud Abbas gave a speech calling the events in Gaza greater and more horrific that the Nakba. Abbas said Israeli prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s plan was to rid historic Palestine of all Palestinians and said he would continue to work toward Palestinian political reconciliation. PA ambassador to the UN Riyad Mansour wrote a letter to the UN Security Council president, saying Israel has ignored Security Council Resolution 2720, adopted on 12/22. (AJ 12/26; AJ 12/27)

Israel said it would no longer grant visas to UN employees automatically, instead judging applicants on a case-by-base. Government spokesperson Eylon Levy said the UN had failed to condemn Hamas for operating out of schools and stealing aid, both charges that Hamas has denied. (AP 12/26)

Israeli forces also issued demolition notices for 8 homes in Furush Beit Dajan. 6 Palestinians were arrested during late-night raids in Yatta, Deir Sammit, Qarawat Bani Hassan, and Haris. In East Jerusalem, Israeli settlers toured the Haram al-Sharif compound. 3 Palestinians were arrested during late-night raids. In Gaza, Palestinians demonstrated against the power outages and living conditions in Gaza City and Khan Yunis, before being dispersed by Hamas forces. 5 were killed and 6 wounded during clashes in Ain al-Hilweh refugee camp in Lebanon. According to Palestinian officials the violence broke out on 7/29 after an unknown gunman tried to assassinate Mahmoud Khalil from al-Shabab al-Muslim, killing his companion. Fatah said Commander Ashraf al-Armouchi, who was in charge of security in the camp, and 4 others were killed. The Lebanese army said 1 mortar shell had hit a base outside of the camp, injuring 1. Palestinian factions met in El Alamein in Egypt to discuss reconciliation. Islamic Jihad boycotted the meeting due to PA arrests of its members in the West Bank. After the meeting, PA president Mahmoud Abbas released a statement saying, “I consider today’s meeting of the general secretaries of the Palestinian factions a first and important step in continuing our dialogue,” and announced a committee to continue the dialogue. Earlier in the day Hamas had called on the PA to end security coordination with Israel and to stop political arrests. President Abbas also met with Egyptian intelligence chief Abbas Kamel before the reconciliation talks. The Knesset passed a law to add stricter punishment for “nationalistically” motivated sex crimes. 6 Palestinian MKs and Gilad Kariv of the Labor Party voted against it. In the West Bank, 3 British-Israeli settlers, including a minor, were killed and 1 Palestinian man was wounded near Furush Beit Dajan in what was first described as a traffic accident but later called a shooting. Israeli settlers threw stones at Palestinian vehicles traveling near Ramallah, al-Khader, Furush Beit Dajan, Nablus, Huwwara, Deir Sharaf, and Tuqu’, causing damage. Israeli settlers also set fire to greenhouses in Furush Beit Dajan. Israeli forces shot and injured 2 Palestinians and arrested 4 others during a raid in Beit Umar. Israeli forces also violently dispersed Palestinian protesters in Kafr Qaddum, injuring 6 with baton rounds and others with tear gas. Meanwhile, Israeli forces violently dispersed Palestinian protesters in Bayt Dajan, injuring 10 with tear gas. Israeli forces also raided Burqin, injuring 2 Palestinians with live ammunition and others with tear gas. In East Jerusalem, 1 Israeli settler shot at Palestinians who allegedly fired fireworks at Israeli settlement housing in al-Tur, no injuries were reported. Israeli police raided the Haram al-Sharif compound and arrested 15 worshippers it claimed had been waiving “terror flags,” referring to the Palestinian flag and Hamas’ flag. In Gaza, Israeli forces conducted airstrikes in Gaza City and Dayr al-Balah, causing damage, including to the Al Dorra children’s hospital. In Tel Aviv, 1 Palestinian man hit 8 people with his car, all tourists from Italy and the UK, before being shot and killed by Israeli police. It was unclear if the ramming was intentional. 1 Italian tourist was killed under circumstances that were not clear as Israeli media claimed he was hit by the Palestinian man and died of his injuries while eyewitness reports said he was shot by Israeli police. PA security forces prevented some 150 Palestinians from holding a press conference at the Watan Media Network office in Ramallah. The group was planning on criticizing the PA’s decisions to withdraw a draft resolution against Israel at the UN Security Council and to participate in the Aqaba summit on 2/26. (PCHR 3/3)

PA prime minister Mohammad Shtayyeh toured Huwwara to inspect the damage after the Israeli settler raid on 2/26. Shtayyeh said it was time to confront the settlers through popular resistance. (WAFA 3/1)

The PA foreign ministry called on the U.S. and international organizations to intervene to end the Israeli sieges of Jericho and Huwwara. Israeli finance minister and minister in charge of the civil administration at the defense ministry, Bezalel Smotrich, said “Huwwara needs to be wiped out. I think that the State of Israel needs to do that, not, God forbid, private individuals,” when asked about the Israeli settler attack on Huwwara on 2/26. The U.S. State Department spokesperson Ned Price condemned Smotrich’s comments, calling them “irresponsible, repugnant, and disgusting” and calling on Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to reject the comments. UN high commissioner for human rights Volker Türk called the comments “unfathomable.” Later on 3/4, Smotrich said “being upset, I misspoke” and Netanyahu called Smotrich’s statements “inappropriate” in a tweet on 3/5. The Knesset passed the first of three readings of a bill that will reintroduce the death penalty to Palestinians. The legislation stipulates that a person who “causes the death of an Israeli citizen when the act is carried out from a racist motive . . . with the purpose of harming the State of Israel and the rebirth of the Jewish people in its homeland,” can receive the death penalty.
