In the West Bank, Israeli settlers threw stones and bottles at Palestinian homes in Hebron. Israeli settlers also assaulted 1 Palestinian minor in al-Muarajat, causing bruises. Israeli forces violently dispersed Palestinian protesters in Aida refugee camp, injuring 1 minor with live ammunition. Israeli forces also violently dispersed Palestinian protesters in Kafr Qaddum, injuring 4 with baton rounds and others with tear gas. Elsewhere, Israeli forces violently dispersed Palestinian protesters in Beita, injuring 5 with tear gas. Israeli forces also violently dispersed Palestinian protesters in Bayt Dajan, injuring 23 with tear gas. Meanwhile, Israeli forces expelled 1 Palestinian family from their home in Hebron. The Hebron municipality said it would take legal action against the expulsion, saying it owns the building. Israeli forces also confiscated 1 tractor in the Masafer Yatta area. In Jaffa, Palestinian citizens of Israel protested against Israeli plans to evict 1,400 Palestinians from their homes in Jaffa, using the Absentees’ Property Law. The parliament of Azerbaijan approved the establishment of an embassy to Israel in Tel Aviv. The Azerbaijani parliament also voted to open a representative office in Ramallah. Adalah published documents showing that the plot of land that the U.S. is planning to build its embassy to Israel in Jerusalem is confiscated Palestinian-owned property. The plot of land in the Allenby Complex was leased by 5 Palestinian landowning families to the British Mandate authorities before 1948 and confiscated by Israel using the Absentees’ Property Law after the Nakba. The U.S. state department and the Israel Land Authority submitted plans to build the new embassy on the land in February 2021. (Adalah, Adalah, HA, WAFA 7/10; JP, MEE 7/11)

Israeli prime minister Yair Lapid spoke to Egyptian president Abdel-Fattah al-Sisi, promising that he will launch an investigation into Haaretz reporting that Israel has covered up the existence of a mass grave near Jerusalem of Egyptian soldiers who were killed in the 1967 war. In the West Bank, Israeli settlers raided Burqa but were chased away by Palestinian residents; no injuries were reported. Israeli settlers also uprooted some 200 olive tree saplings in Khallet Hassan and stole 4 sheep in Kafr Malik. Israeli forces shot and killed 1 Palestinian man and injured 6 others with live ammunition during a raid in Qalandia refugee camp. Israeli forces also shot and killed 1 Palestinian minor and injured 3 others with live ammunition and a concussion bomb during a raid in Balata refugee camp. Elsewhere, Israeli forces delivered demolition notices for 7 Palestinian-owned homes west of Jericho and razed lands in Beit Safafa. 21 Palestinians were arrested during late-night raids in Qalandia refugee camp, Balata refugee camp, Jenin, Salfit, Ramallah, Hebron, and Bethlehem. In the Naqab, Israeli undercover forces shot and killed 1 Palestinian man during an arrest raid in Rahat; an autopsy later contradicted the Israeli forces’ explanation that the man was pointing a gun at them when he was killed, as it revealed that he was shot twice in the back. Israeli authorities also demolished 2 Palestinian-owned homes in Umm al-Fahm. The security coordinator at the Gilad settlement outpost was arrested by Israeli forces on suspicion of having aided settler vandalism in Fara‘ata in the West Bank on 3/14. Another security guard at the settlement was also arrested for partaking in the vandalism. (HA 3/17)

The Israeli supreme court voted to uphold the Israeli ministry of justice’s decision to seize 7.5 acres of land owned by residents in the Israeli town of Taibeh, using the Absentee Property Law despite the Palestinian owners not having left their property during the Nakba. The ministry of justice decided to seize the land in 2017 after the owners applied to fill a quarry to convert into agricultural lands. Furthermore, the 3 supreme court justices ruled that the families must pay $9,100 in court fees. (HA 3/15; HA 3/18)

The EU delayed its annual $236 million aid to the PA and various Palestinian civil society projects, as a Hungarian representative wanted to condition the aid on removing “incitement” from Palestinian schoolbooks. The European Commission will have to rule on the Hungarian demand before the aid can be released to the PA. PA representatives told Haaretz that the Hungarian delegate is behaving like the Israeli far-right by raising demands on conditioning aid to Palestine. PA foreign minister Riyad al-Maliki has told the Hungarian delegate that the PA will not accept the demand. (HA 3/15; WAFA 3/16)

U.S. ambassador to Israel Tom Nides told Americans for Peace Now, during a virtual event, that he is infuriated by Israeli settlement expansion but that he is unable to stop it. He further stated that he did everything in his capacity to stop Israeli plans to construct settlements in the E1 area. Ambassador Nides also said that the U.S. wants to reopen its consulate to Palestinians in Jerusalem but that the Israelis are “aggressively” opposing it and that both Israel and the PA are making “too big a deal” over the issue. Lastly, Nides rejected the idea that the Palestinians can be bought off by economic incentives as they do not see this as a trade-off for political negotiations. (JP 3/16; MEMO, WAFA 3/17)

More than 500 Google employees signed a petition in protest over Google’s decision to relocate 1 Jewish employee from the U.S. to Brazil after she voiced criticism of Google’s contract with the Israeli cloud server Project Nimbus. The Google employee said the company was attempting to force her out of her job by giving her 17 days to agree to relocate to São Paulo. (LAT 3/15; JP, MEMO, TOI, WAFA 3/17)

Along Gaza’s border, IDF troops and tanks open fire on a Hamas military site nr. al-Bureij r.c., causing no reported damage or injuries. The IDF says that the attack was ordered in response to shots fired at IDF patrols in the area earlier in the day. In the West Bank, IDF troops arrest a Palestinian youth after she allegedly attempts to stab them nr. Qalqilya. They also arrest 4 Palestinians and issue 3 arrest summons during raids nr. Bethlehem, Nablus, Ramallah and Hebron, and patrol nr. Salfit, Ramallah, and Hebron. Armed gunmen shoot and injure an Israeli settler nr. Nablus. The Israeli NGO Yesh Din files a motion with the Custodian of Absentee Property stating that the current relocation plan for the Amona settlement outpost, which the outpost’s residents approved on 12/18, is illegal because a section of the proposed relocation site, dubbed Plot 38, is privately owned by Palestinians. Akram Rajoub briefly at a checkpoint nr. the city; confiscate 2 cranes from a construction site s. of Nablus. IDF troops violently disperse Palestinians protesting outside Ofer Prison nr. Ramallah ahead of Prisoners’ Day on 4/17, injuring 1. The IDF also conducts house searches and raids in 1 village each nr. Jenin and Hebron, arresting 2 Palestinians; patrols in 2 villages nr. FMs from 16 of the 28 EU mbr. states sign onto a letter to EU foreign policy chief Mogherini calling for goods produced in the Israeli settlements to be labeled as such in stores across Europe, reiterating public calls by the EU Council in 5/2012, 12/2012, and 11/2014 as well as a similar letter to the previous EU foreign affairs chief in 4/2013. A Tel Aviv court issues a landmark ruling that Israel cannot use the 1950 Absentee Property Law to seize West Bank lands abandoned by Palestinians during the 1967 war. Coming fr. a lower court, the ruling constitutes a directive to other district courts and is not binding, as it would be had the High Court issued the ruling. (HA 1/24)

The IDF, PA security officers hold a ceremony to jointly unlock the gate (set up after the outbreak of the al-Aqsa intifada, locked since 2001) on the Anabta–Tulkarm road, finalizing the transfer of security control over Tulkarm; the IDF sets up a checkpoint 30 m. down the road to check Palestinian IDs; all other checkpoints into and out of the city, all villages surrounding Tulkarm remain under Israeli control. The IDF demolishes 2 Palestinian homes in Silwan; uproots 300 olive trees in Surif nr.
