In the West Bank, 1 Palestinian was arrested during a late-night raid in al-Shuyukh; the man had been released after serving a 16-year sentence on 8/11. 10 others were arrested during late-night raids in and around Umm al-Rihan, Tubas, Beita, ‘Askar refugee camp, Bethlehem, and Fawwar. The PA called on the U.S. to intervene over Israeli plans to expand Israeli settlements with more than 2,000 housing units in the West Bank. The PA said the new construction contradicts U.S. president Joe Biden’s stance against settlement construction. (HA 8/12)

The PA said it had received 150,000 doses of the Pfizer COVID-19 vaccine. The health ministry further stated that it had received 1 million doses from Pfizer so far this year and that another 3 million would be delivered by the end of 2021. The PA also said it had sent 100,000 vaccine doses to Gaza, including 50,000 Pfizer and 50,000 of the Russian Sputnik vaccines. (AA, WAFA 8/12)

The Israeli high court of justice overturned former education minister Yoav Gallant’s decision to withhold the Israel Prize in mathematics and computer science from Oded Goldreich. Gallant had decided to withhold the prize given to Goldreich over claims that Goldreich is supporting a boycott of Israeli institutions in Israeli settlements. (HA 8/12)

Sudan said it would hand over its former president Omar al-Bashir to the ICC but did not provide a timeframe for doing so. Al-Bashir is wanted by the ICC for charges of genocide, war crimes, and crimes against humanity. (AJ 8/12)

AIPAC launched an ad campaign on Facebook implying that U.S. house representative Ilhan Omar (D-MN) stands with terrorists against the U.S. and Israel. The ad drew criticism from several pro-Israel organizations and Jewish Americans including J Street and Ilhan Omar’s staff, which claimed AIPAC ads were Islamophobic and putting Omar’s life at risk. Among other AIPAC targets in its ad campaign were Palestinian American Rashida Tlaib (D-MI), Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY), and Cori Bush (D-MO). (AJ, HA 8/12)

In the West Bank, Israeli settlers threw stones at Palestinian vehicles traveling near Silat al-Dahir. Israeli forces violently dispersed Palestinian protesters in Kafr Qaddum, injuring 2 with rubber-coated bullets, while others suffered tear-gas related injuries. Israeli forces also violently dispersed Palestinian protesters in Bayt Dajan, injuring 2 with rubber-coated bullets, while others suffered tear-gas related injuries. Elsewhere, Israeli forces violently dispersed Palestinians protesting the new Israeli settlement outpost Evyatar in Beita, injuring 5 with rubber-coated bullets, while others suffered tear-gas related injuries. Israeli forces also blocked the main road to al-Ram with cement blocks. Meanwhile, Israeli forces continued blocking the main road to ‘Azun for the 3d day in a row. Israel forces also violently dispersed Palestinians in Silwad and Nabi Salih, causing tear-gas related injuries. 6 Palestinians were arrested during late-night raids in Salem. In East Jerusalem, Israeli forces violently suppressed Palestinian protesters at the Haram al-Sharif compound and Damascus Gate plaza, injuring 9, including 3 who were hospitalized and 1 journalist from Middle East Eye; 21 were arrested. The PA said it had canceled an agreement made with Israel from 6/17 in which the PA would receive 1.2 million doses of Pfizer COVID-19 vaccine from Israel in exchange for giving Israel its shipment of Pfizer vaccines set to arrive in early 2022. The PA said that the initial batch of vaccines received from Israel did not “conform to the specifications contained in the agreement.” Photos circulating on social media showed that the vials received from Israel expired in June 2021. Israel said that the PA knew that the vaccines were soon to expire when the made the deal with Israel, which contradicts statements from the PA. (AJ, ALM, AP, HA, WAFA 6/18; JP 6/19)

In the West Bank, 1 Palestinian teen shot by Israeli forces during an anti-settlement protest on 6/16 in Beita succumbed to his injuries. Israeli forces demolished 1 house in Halhul and displaced 8 Palestinians, demolished 1 car wash in Jinsafut, delivered demolition orders for 8 structures in Jawaya, and demolished 1 agricultural structure in Wadi Muhaisen. Israeli forces also shot and injured 4 Palestinians during a late-night raid in Jenin. Elsewhere, Israeli forces continued blocking the main road to ‘Azun for the 2d day in a row. 7 Palestinians were arrested during late-night raids in and around Jalazun refugee camp, Yatta, Tarqumiyya, and Kafr Dan. In East Jerusalem, 2 Palestinians were arrested during late-night raids in Silwan. In Gaza, Israeli forces conducted air strikes in Khan Yunis and Gaza City, causing damage; no injuries were reported. Israel said the air strikes were in response to incendiary balloons sent toward Israel, which were said to have ignited 8 fires. In Israel, a Palestinian Israeli journalist had large parts of his home blown up by a bomb planted in his house in Taibeh, causing severe damage but no injuries. An Israeli court ordered a Palestinian woman be released into house arrest and criticized Israeli police for trying to force her to confess that she intended to hit an Israeli soldier with her car at a checkpoint in East Jerusalem on 6/15. (HA 6/20)

Israel arrested a Palestinian Israeli imam of Lydda’s largest mosque, Shaykh Yousef al-Baz, saying he had incited violence by sharing a clip from a movie showing people killing a police officer on Facebook. (HA 6/17; MEMO 6/18)

The Israeli justice ministry indicted 1 Israeli border police officer for reckless homicide in relation to the shooting of Eyad al-Hallaq, a Palestinian man with special needs, in the Old City of East Jerusalem on 5/30/2020. In the West Bank, Israeli settlers uprooted some 35 olive trees in Hebron. Israeli undercover forces assassinated 1 Palestinian in al-Bireh from close range before leaving him to bleed out. Israeli forces also delivered demolition notices for 3 industrial structures in Dayr Sharif. Elsewhere, Israeli forces delivered notices for land seizures to complete a 9.3-mile-long water pipeline to 2 Israeli settlements near Salfit. 12 Palestinians were arrested during late-night raids in Biddu, Bayt Duqqu, al-Za’ayyem, Kafr Dan, Jaba‘, Nablus, Aqabat Jabir, and Hebron. In East Jerusalem, Palestinians protested Israeli-planned evictions of Palestinians in Batn al-Hawa in Silwan. 6 Palestinians were arrested during late-night raids in al-Tur and the Old City, including 1 man for gesturing his middle finger at Israeli police in the Old City. Israel reopened the Erez and Kerem Shalom crossings for humanitarian aid and aid workers. The Kerem Shalom crossing remained closed for exports. Israel also allowed Gaza fishermen to fish up to 6 nautical miles from shore. (HA 5/24; HA, HA 5/25)

PA health minister Mai al-Kaila said the PA had received 103,000 doses of the Pfizer COVID-19 vaccine and that 46,800 of them would be sent to Gaza. 203,161 Palestinians in Gaza and the West Bank are fully vaccinated. (WAFA 5/25)

Jordan summoned the Israeli ambassador to the country to complain about the detention of 2 Jordanian citizens in Israel and the lack of access for the Jordanian embassy to talk to them. (WAFA 5/25; MEE 6/1)

U.S. secretary of state Antony Blinken landed in Tel Aviv for meetings with Israeli prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu, foreign minister Gabi Ashkenazi, and defense minister Benny Gantz. Later in the day, Secretary Blinken met with PA president Mahmoud Abbas and PA prime minister Mohammed Shtayyeh in Ramallah, as well as Palestinian activists at the offices of AMIDEAST. At a press conference with Prime Minister Netanyahu, Blinken reiterated the Biden administration’s support for Israel’s “right to defend itself” and said that the U.S. will help rebuild Gaza while preventing Hamas from benefiting from any U.S. aid. Netanyahu said that Israel would have a “very powerful response” if Hamas breaks the ceasefire. During a meeting with President Abbas in Ramallah, Blinken announced that the U.S. would reopen the consulate general in West Jerusalem, servicing Palestinians. The Trump administration closed the consulate and merged it with the Israeli embassy after it was moved to Jerusalem. Blinken also said that the Biden administration is asking Congress to approve $75 million in aid to Gaza and another $30 million to UNRWA. In the West Bank, Israeli forces handed stop-work orders for 13 Palestinian houses in Qabalan. Israeli forces also seized 2 caravans in Susiya and 1 tractor in Bardala. 4 Palestinians were arrested at checkpoints near Nablus and Hebron. In East Jerusalem, Israeli settlers attacked 1 Palestinian man and 1 Israeli man trying to help him, causing injuries. Israeli forces arrested 2 Palestinian minors suspected of slapping 1 ultra-orthodox Jewish man and filming the incident on the Jerusalem light rail. 1 Palestinian family started demolishing their own home in Jabal Mukabir. 9 Palestinians were arrested, including 7 minors during late-night raids in the Old City and al-Tur, and 2 were arrested in the Old City during the 8th day of clashes between Israeli forces and Palestinians at the Damascus Gate plaza. PA health minister Mai al-Kaila said the PA had ordered 4.5 million doses of the Pfizer and Sputnik V COVID-19 vaccines. It is not clear when the doses will arrive. The total cost for the 4.5 million doses was $27 million. (HA, WAFA 4/20)

The Israeli supreme court dismissed a petition from 9 Palestinian-Israeli families to have the court order the local municipality to open an Arab school in Upper Nazareth. The Association for Civil Rights in Israel called the decision “saddening” and said the city has neglected its Palestinian-Israeli students, who constitute 1/3d of the total student body. (HA 4/20)

At a normalization celebration event at the UAE embassy in Washington D.C., the ambassadors of Israel and the UAE to the U.S., along with diplomats from Morocco and Bahrain, planted an olive tree. Israel sent COVID-19 medical aid to Jordan upon Jordanian request, including ventilators, test kits, and face masks. The move was seen as an Israeli effort to ease tension between the 2 countries, which have been high in recent months. The request was made in March, when Jordan’s COVID-19 cases were peaking. In the West Bank, Israeli settlers set up tents on Palestinian-owned land in Taqqua and 2 mobile homes in Asira. Israeli forces demolished barracks and construction materials in Jinsafut. 11 Palestinians were arrested during raids in and around Kaubar, Jalazun refugee camp, al-Izzariya, Qalandia, Sa‘ir, and Jenin. In East Jerusalem, 3 Palestinians were arrested during a raid in Issawiyya. The trial against Israeli prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu began after many delays. Prime Minister Netanyahu is charged with fraud, bribery, and breach of trust. Netanyahu’s trial began on the same day as Israeli president Reuven Rivlin started consulting with Israeli party leaders to determine who will go 1st at trying to form a government. The Jerusalem Post reported that the pharmaceutical company Pfizer has halted shipments of 700,000 doses of the COVID-19 vaccine to Israel because the country owes the company payment for 2.5 million doses of vaccines already delivered. Israel made a deal with the company, allowing them to use more collected data by the Israeli health system, and paid more per dose than any other country. (JP 4/5)

Former Jordanian crown prince Prince Hamzah bin Hussein, who was put under house arrest on 4/3, said in a voice recording that he will not stay silent, thus disobeying the Jordanian army’s orders not to communicate with anyone. Prince Hamzah is accused of being part of a plot against his half-brother King Abdullah II. Later in the day, Prince Hamzah was said to have pledged allegiance to King Abdullah in a letter after talking to his and Abdullah II’s uncle Prince Hassan. In the West Bank, Israeli settlers brought their cattle to graze on Palestinian-owned agricultural land east of Yatta, damaging crops. Israeli settlers also vandalized 15 cars and 3 houses in Kafr Haris. Elsewhere, Israeli settlers threw stones at Palestinian vehicles traveling near Huwwara. Israeli forces demolished and seized 25 structures, displacing 55 Palestinians, including 32 children, in Khirbet Humsa. Israeli forces also shot and injured 1 Palestinian who was trying to enter Israel for work near Barta‘a. 8 Palestinians were arrested, including 6 during raids in and around al-Mughayyir, Tulkarm, Qalqilya, and Hebron; 2 were arrested at checkpoints near Jit and ‘Azun. In East Jerusalem, 3 Palestinians were arrested during a raid in al-Tur; clashes broke out during the raid, leading to tear-gas related injuries. Israel delivered 2,000 COVID-19 vaccination doses to the PA intended for medical staff. Israel said it intends on sending the PA 5,000 doses. PA prime minister Mohammed Shtayyeh said the PA expects to have received 50,000 COVID-19 doses from 4 different companies by the middle of February. Prime Minister Shtayyeh also announced that the COVID-19-related lockdown of the West Bank was extended by 2 weeks. The WHO announced that Palestine will start receiving 37,000 doses of the Pfizer/BioNTech vaccine around the middle of February though the COVAX program. The U.S. Joe Biden administration made its 1st official contact with Palestinian officials. The newly appointed deputy assistant secretary for Israel-Palestine Hady Amr spoke to several Palestinian officials. This marked the 1st official contract between Palestinian and U.S. officials since December 2017. (AX, HA 2/1)

A Biden administration official also said the administration is using and supporting the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance’s (IHRA) working definition of anti-Semitism, which has been widely critiqued for conflating criticism of Israel with anti-Semitism. Kosovo’s foreign minister Meliza Haradinaj and Israeli foreign minister Gabi Ashkenazi signed an agreement between the 2 countries, which include Kosovo opening an embassy to Israel in Jerusalem and designating Hezbollah as a terrorist organization. In September, Kosovo, Serbia, the U.S., and Israel signed an agreement to have the 2 Balkan countries open embassies to Israel in Jerusalem in return for financial incentives. Serbia’s foreign minister said Serbia has “invested serious efforts in our relations with Israel in recent years and we are not happy with this decision.” Serbia is displeased that Israel as part of the agreement recognized Kosovo as an independent state. The PA, Turkey, the Arab League, and the Organisation for Islamic Cooperation also publicly criticized Kosovo because of the country’s decision to open an embassy in Jerusalem. In the West Bank, Israeli settlers assaulted 1 Palestinian in Huwwara; he was treated at a hospital for his injuries. Israeli settlers with military escort also attacked Palestinian homes in Hebron; no injuries were reported. Elsewhere, Israeli settlers attacked Palestinian shepherds and farmers in the Masafer Yatta area, causing several injuries. Israeli forces shot and injured 1 Palestinian using rubber-coated bullets near the separation barrier in the Jenin area. Israeli forces also violently dispersed a protest in Kafr Qaddum, causing tear-gas related injuries. Elsewhere, Israeli forces prevented Palestinians from farming their land in Jalud. 1 man alleged to be Palestinian threw a Molotov cocktail at an Israeli soldier at a checkpoint near Jit before driving away in his car; the soldier was unharmed. 4 Palestinians were arrested during raids in Kisan and Jenin. In East Jerusalem, 2 Palestinians were arrested during late-night raids in al-Tur. In Gaza, Israeli forces opened fire at Palestinian shepherds east of Dayr al-Balah; no injuries were reported. In Israel, Israeli prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu was the 1st to receive the Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine for the COVID-19 virus. Israel does not plan to offer vaccinations to Palestinians in the West Bank. The PA says it has secured the Russian-made vaccine Sputnik V, which will arrive in 2021. 20 percent of the Palestinian vaccinations are expected to be delivered for free from the World Health Organization as part of a scheme to deliver vaccinations to poorer countries. Israeli protesters demonstrated against Prime Minister Netanyahu for the 26th Saturday in a row in Jerusalem and Tel Aviv. The protesters are demanding that Prime Minister Netanyahu resign due to his COVID-19 response, the Israeli economy, and the corruption cases against him. (HA 12/19)

In the West Bank, Israeli forces demolished 4 houses, displacing 44 Palestinians in al-‘Awja. Israeli forces also demolished 1 shed and seized 1 tent in al-Mughayyir. Elsewhere, Israeli forces demolished a tract of land planted with olive saplings near Qalandia. Israeli forces also prevented teachers and farmers from getting to their work at a flying checkpoint east of Yatta. 13 Palestinians were arrested during raids in and around Bayt Umar, Hebron, Bethlehem, Jericho, and Nablus; during a raid in Bayt Umar, 1 woman was injured when Israeli forces broke through her door. The PA health minister Mai al-Kaila said that the PA had signed an agreement with the World Health Organization for the UN organ to provide 20 percent of the West Bank and Gaza’s needed COVID-19 vaccines. It is unclear when the vaccines will arrive. On 12/7, Britain started vaccinating its population with a Pfizer-made vaccine and Israel is scheduled to receive the 1st shipment of the Pzifer-made vaccine on 12/9. Health Minister al-Kaila also said the PA was looking at either buying vaccines from the company Covax once the free vaccines are out of stock or to buy the Russian vaccine Sputnik V.
