Overnight, the IDF makes an air strike on a suspected rocket-launching site in n. Gaza, killing 1 Palestinian. During the day, the IDF makes a 2d air strike, killing another Palestinian; briefly sends 25 armored vehicles into Wadi al-Silqa in c. Gaza to surround the home of senior Islamic Jihad mbr. Yusuf Samiri, who flees and is killed in an exchange of fire with troops; troops also fire on Samiri’s home, killing a Palestinian infant, wounding 4 Palestinians (including a woman and child). The IDF also sends tanks and bulldozers into s. Gaza to level land nr. the Rafah airport site, firing on surrounding areas, causing no reported injuries. Palestinians fire 8 rockets and mortars fr. Gaza into Israel, causing damage but no injuries. In the West Bank, the IDF searches PA Education Min. offices in Nablus; conducts late-night arrest raids, house searches in and around Jenin town and r.c., in Qalqilya, nr. Hebron. In retaliation, Barak orders missile strikes on Fatah offices and Force 17 buildings in al-Bireh, Khan Yunis, and Nablus, destroying them, damaging an adjacent Samaritan synagogue and at least 1 home.
