Occupied Palestine/Israel: Shimon Peres meets for 2 hours in Cairo with Pres. Mubarak. Peres says differences that are obstructing peace efforts "can be solved in a very short while"; also says that "we do not object to two deported Palestinians in the team [of possible Palestinian negotiators]" [NYT, WP, LAT 1/25].

Reacting to Peres' statements, Shamir's office says "People who are deportees have been deported because they were busy with anti-Israeli activity and terrorism" [WP 1/25]; office also states that Yitzhak Rabin was not authorized to make statements to Baker regarding the composition of the Palestinian delegation, statements revealed on 1/23 [FBIS 1/24].

Faisal Husayni says that while he was in prison on 1/21 Shin Bet officers tried to coerce an admission of illegal political activity by offering to release imprisoned Arabs if he confessed to funding the intifada and writing leaflets. Husayni says that Israeli threatened to make further arrests if he did not cooperate [NYT 1/25].

Other Countries: Hadashot reports secret U.S. diplomatic survey, conducated at the request of the State Dep't., says that Israeli ministers Arens, Rabin, Peres, and Weizman all have had meetings with Faisal Husayni during the past few months [FBIS 1/24].

Military Action

Occupied Palestine/Israel: IDF bulldozes Qalqilya home of Palestinian convicted of murder [FJ 2/5]; at least 6 other homes are destroyed by IDF [FBIS 1/26].

2 IDF soldiers in Rafah are injured by thrown rocks; army uses tear gas to disperse crowd of youths [FBIS 1/26].

Military closes 3 schools in the O.T. for rock-throwing and graffiti [FJ 2/5]. IDF troops search the Jordanian border near the Hazeva settlement after gunshots were heard [MET 2/6].
