There has been a complete electricity blackout in Gaza since 10/12/2023 due to the Israeli blockade. The WHO says the second phase of the polio vaccination campaign begins in central Gaza today. Spanish prime minister Pedro Sanchez calls on EU countries to respond to Spain and Ireland’s call to suspend the EU free trade deal with Israel. EU high commissioner for foreign affairs Josep Borrell says the EU countries “firmly reject the unjustified [Israeli] attacks against UNSG Antonio Guterres. The repeated accusations of anti-Semitism against him are slanderous.” Borrell also reminds Israeli prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu that Guterres does not have the authority to recall UNIFIL troops as they are mandated by the Security Council. UN under-secretary-general for peace operations Jean-Pierre Lacroix says the peacekeepers will remain in all their positions, despite Israeli attacks. A New York Times investigation finds Israeli forces routinely use Palestinians, including children, as human shields in Gaza, echoing previous reports by Al Jazeera and Haaretz.
