Israeli-Palestinian clashes increase sharply, leaving 3 IDF soldiers dead, 4 wounded in gunfights with Palestinians and 6 Palestinians dead, 140 wounded by the IDF. A small bomb explodes in West Jerusalem, lightly injuring 2 Israelis. Barak orders missile attacks on the PSF training center nr. Jericho, Jericho's Oasis Casino, a marble factory in Bethlehem, residential areas around Bayt Jala and Bethlehem. The IDF also directs fire fr. tanks, heavy machine guns, grenade launchers at Palestinian residential areas in Bayt Jala, Bayt Sahur, Bethlehem, Beitunia, Jericho, al-Khadir, Mentar crossing, Tulkarm. Jewish settlers shoot, seriously wound 2 Palestinians nr. Nablus; open fire on Palestinian homes in al-Khadir. Israel, however, reopens the Rafah border crossing to individuals, though trade is still barred. Following a mtg. with Albright in Washington, Israeli acting FM Ben-Ami says Israel must address the clashes "not as a civilian uprising but as a military confrontation." (PA negotiator Erakat was to have met with Albright as well but could not leave Jericho because of IDF air strikes.) With the violence escalating, MK and fmr. PM Shimon Peres makes a low-key trip to Gaza very late this evening to meet with Arafat.
