In Gaza, Hamas police assault a Palestinian journalist, lightly injuring him. IDF troops on the Gaza border e. of Jabaliya open fire on Palestinian farmers on 2 occasions, causing no injuries or damage. In the West Bank, the IDF conducts house searches and raids in 1 village each nr. Tulkarm, Jenin, and Bethlehem, arresting 6 Palestinians and issuing arrest summons to 4; patrols in 2 villages each nr. Hebron and Tulkarm. Israeli settlers uproot around 800 olive trees in a village nr. Hebron. An Israeli settler assaults a Palestinian in c. Hebron, causing severe bleeding. In East Jerusalem, over 160 right-wing Jewish activists tour Haram al-Sharif as a part of Jerusalem Day celebrations. Dozens of Palestinian youths throw stones and bottles at thousands of Israelis parading through the Old City; 2 policemen and 19 Palestinians are injured, and at least 5 Palestinians are arrested. Separately, Israeli forces arrest a Palestinian at Haram al-Sharif. They also conduct house searches and raids in Silwan, al-Tur, Ras al-Amud, and Sur al-Bahir, arresting 7 Palestinians. At a Jerusalem Day ceremony, Israeli PM Benjamin Netanyahu says that his govt. will keep building in East Jerusalem and pledges to never let the city be divided. (YA 5/17)
