Arab World: PLO announces Khalil al-Wazir will be buried in Syria. Tunisian govemment officially blames Israel for assassination of Wazir [WP 4/19].

Occupied Palestine/Israel: Entire W. Bank, except Jericho, is declared closed military zone [FJ 4/24]. Palestinian is killed when soldiers open fire on demonstration in Rafah. Palestinian from Gaza's Zaytun quarter is shot dead in separate incident. In Jenin, protester is shot in head, seriously wounded. Curfews continue in 16 camps, Nablus, and 'Anabta. Military Action

Occupied Palestine/Israel: Violent demonstrations break out in Gaza Strip and W. Bank following news reports of Abu Jihad's assassination. At least 14 are killed by army gunfire in occupied territories; many others are wounded. Military orders 10 refugee camps under curfew [WP 4/17, 4/18]. Nablus is declared a closed military area. Soldiers use tear gas, bullets against large demonstrations in al-Birah and Ramallah, injuring at least 2. Palestinians and Israeli troops also clash in Tulkarm, Jenin, and Duhayshah camp [FJ 4/24].

Arab World: PLO military leader Khalil al-Wazir (Abu Jihad) is gunned down in his Tunis home; chauffeur and 2 bodyguards are also killed [WP 4/17; NYT 4/18].

Occupied Palestine/Israel: Israel deports 8 Palestinians, including Gazan Islamic Jihad leader 'Abd al-Aziz 'Awdah, to S. Lebanon security zone. Expulsion orders are issued to 6 Bayta residents and 6 other Palestinians from occupied territories [WP 4/12; CSM 4/13]. In response to charges brought by Israeli civil rights group, Israeli High Court decides army should give at least 48 hours' notice before demolishing more homes in Bayta. Maj. Gen. Ehud Barak, deputy chief of staff, states 1 of 13 Bayta homes may have been demolished mistakenly, says 4,800 Palestinians activists are being held in Israeli prisons, including 900 in administrative detention. Other Countries: At World Court in the Hague, UN argues that U.S. attempt to close PLO's observer mission to UN is violation of U.S. treaty obligations [WP, NYT 4/12]. In speech before Conference of Presidents of Major American Jewish Organizations, Democratic presidential candidate Michael Dukakis blames Arab leaders for continued violence in Middle East, states support for Shultz peace initiative [WP 4/12]. In Cyprus, PLO officials negotiate with hijackers of Kuwaiti airliner in effort to free hostages in exchange for refueling plane [NYT, WP 4/12].

Occupied Palestine/Israel: Palestinian is shot, killed in clash with Israeli troops in Kafr al-Ra'i, near Jenin; Palestinian sources report 3 killed, 5 injured [WP 4/12; FJ 4/17]. Curfews are in force in Balatah and 'Ayn Bayt al-Ma' camps. At least 2 protesters are seriously wounded by army gunfire in Gaza Strip clashes [FJ 4/17].

Occupied Palestine/Israel: Israeli army reports 15-year-old Israeli killed 4/6 died when bullet from M-16 rifle carried by Israeli guard struck her in head. Investigation has also shown guard, who was banned by army from Nablus, killed 1 Palestinian and wounded another before Israeli group reached Bayta village. Some villagers reacted to news of killing by attacking the Israelis with stones. Guard was wounded by rock thrown at head. Villagers took guards' guns and broke them. Other Palestinians tried to hide Israeli youths. Soldiers later broke into Bayta hospital, beating patients in search for those suspected of involvement in clash [NYT 4/9].

Arab World: Sec. of State Shultz leaves Amman, travels to Cyprus for brief meeting with Lebanese pres. Amin Jumayyil before ending 6-day Middle East visit [NYT 4/9].

Occupied Palestine/Israel: Army blows up 8 houses in Bayta village [NYT 4/9]. Protesters and soldiers clash in Nablus and Jenin. In Gaza Strip, 5 Palestinians are injured by army gunfire in Jabalya; 2 are shot, wounded in Maghazi camp [FJ 4/10].

Occupied Palestine/Israel: During the night, Jewish settlers raid village of Bayta, breaking windows of cars and houses. P.M. Shamir and other political leaders speak at funeral of Israeli girl from Elon Moreh settlement killed 4/6 in Bayta; preliminary report of investigation into death indicates girl was shot in head. Following funeral settlers enter Dayr al-Hatab village; soldiers force settlers to leave [WP 4/8]. In Nablus-region village of Rujib, settlers stone Palestinian cars; 1 Palestinian is beaten. Officials demolish house in Shuyukh and 2 in Sa'ir. Closure of W. Bank schools is extended through 5/8 [FJ 4/10].

Arab World: Sec. of State George Shultz meets with King Fahd in Saudi Arabia and retums to Jordan to discuss progress of U.S. peace proposal with King Hussein [LAT 4/8].

Occupied Palestine/Israel: Soldier shoots dead Palestinian youth allegedly running from hills near Bayta. Army demolishes 5 houses in Bayta; village remains under curfew [WP 4/8]. At least 4 Palestinians are injured during demonstration in Nablus. There are also clashes in Ramallah and nearby village of Biddu as well as Jenin and village of Qabatiyyah. 'Ayn Bayt al-Ma' remains under army curfew. In Gaza Strip, Beach camp youth is shot, seriously wounded; violent clash is also reported in Jabalya camp [FJ 4/10].

Occupied Palestine/Israel: In Yamun, near Jenin, 3 houses are demolished by Israeli authorities; owners are suspected of participating in demonstrations [FJ 4/10]. In Bethlehem, 10 stores are welded shut and owners' IDs confiscated because shops had opened during morning [FJ 4/10].

Arab World: Sec. of State George Shultz meets with King Hussein in Amman, flies to Damascus for talks with Pres. Hafiz al-Asad, and returns to Jerusalem [WP 4/6].

Military Action

Occupied Palestine/Israel: Demonstrations are reported in several W. Bank and Gaza Strip villages and camps. In Zayat, in Tulkarm district, soldiers use live ammunition to disperse protesters, injuring 8. Curfews are in force in 6 W. Bank villages and cities as well as Qabatiyyah and Jenin camp. Balatah is under curfew for 14th consecutive day. Dayr Ghassana and Bayt Rima villages, near Ramallah, are among 6 sealed villages. Soldiers raid Sura village, near Nablus, and uproot olive trees. In Gaza Strip, curfew in Jalazun is lifted for 3 hours. In Dayr al-Balah camp, protesters stone car of settlers from Kiryat Arba; settlers flee and Palestinians burn car; camp is placed under curfew [FJ 4/10].

Arab World: In Israel's S. Lebanon security zone, Israeli soldiers kill 2 Palestinian commandos attempting to cross border. Palestine Liberation Front claims responsibility [WP 4/6].
