Military Action

Occupied Palestine/Israel: Violent demonstrations break out in Gaza Strip and W. Bank following news reports of Abu Jihad's assassination. At least 14 are killed by army gunfire in occupied territories; many others are wounded. Military orders 10 refugee camps under curfew [WP 4/17, 4/18]. Nablus is declared a closed military area. Soldiers use tear gas, bullets against large demonstrations in al-Birah and Ramallah, injuring at least 2. Palestinians and Israeli troops also clash in Tulkarm, Jenin, and Duhayshah camp [FJ 4/24].

Arab World: PLO military leader Khalil al-Wazir (Abu Jihad) is gunned down in his Tunis home; chauffeur and 2 bodyguards are also killed [WP 4/17; NYT 4/18].
