Occupied Palestine/Israel: Leaflet issued by Unified National Command of the Uprising offers to end the Palestinian protests if Israelis: 1) withdraw army from cities, villages, and camps; 2) release prisoners; 3) allow deported Palestinians to return; 4) cancel military orders and civil regulations issued since beginning of the uprising; 5) allow democratic and free elections in the towns and villages in the occupied territories; 6) remove restrictions placed on the national economy [NYT 5/31]. MK Dedi Zucker demands the IDF set up a commission to protect human rights of prisoners. 20 Israeli law professors sign petition expressing concern about existence of a dual legal system-one for Israelis and one for Arabs [FJ 6/5].

Occupied Palestine/Israel: IDF reservist accuses members of the IDF of systematically abusing Palestinian prisoners [LAT 5/3 1]. Scattered clashes occur throughouthe occupied territories [LAT 5/31, FJ 6/5]. A strike closes shops and businesses in East Jerusalem and the W. Bank, but is less successful in Gaza [LAT 5/311. In Jit Jewish settlers set fire to 8 dunums of Arab crops [FJ 5/6]. In Hebron 70 people are arresteduring clashes; in Yamun at least 50 are injured; in Gaza 20 are hurt in clashes [FJ 5/6].

Occupied Palestine/Israel: In the W. Bank 70,000 junior high students return to class for the first time in 4 months [NYT 5/30].

Military

Occupied Palestine/Israel: Israeli soldiers shoot 6 Arabs and injure 60 during riots on the W. Bank and Gaza Strip [WT 5/30]. A 25-year-old man is shot, killed by Israeli troops near Jenin [NYT 5/31]. Military governor of the W. Bank announces that dozens of youths, aged 14 to 18, will be released from prison as "goodwill" gesture [WT 5/30]. IDF announces it will investigate report soldiers buried 4 Palestinians in rocks up to their chests [NYT 5/30].

Occupied Palestine/Israel: A general strike is observed in the occupied territories. Several demonstrations areheld on 40-day anniversary of the death of Abu Jihad. Several refugee camps are placed under curfews [NYT 5/26, FJ 5/29].

Military

Occupied Palestine/Israel: Soldiers injure 58 Palestinians during clashes in jabalya. The military uproots 150 trees in the village of Bayt Iba [FJ 5/29].

Arab World: Israeli air power and artillery aid the South Lebanon Army's attack on a Hizballah stronghold in S. Lebanon. Israeli helicopter gunships attack Palestinian refugee camp near Sidon. Amal announces it will join Hizballah in the fight against the Israelis. Amal also claims to have shot down an Israeli helicopter over Lebanon [NYT 5/26].

Occupied Palestine/Israel: In order to show "Jewish presence" MKs Dov Shilansky and Ovadiya Eli tour Temple Mount [WT 5/25, FJ 5/29]. It is announced that an Israeli consular delegation will visit the Soviet Union for the first time in 21 years. [WP 5/25].

Military

Occupied Palestine/Israel: In Burayj Palestinian man is shot dead by Israeli troops. A curfew is imposed, 30 people arrested in 'Anabta. One person is shot in Bayt Furik. During demonstrations in Gaza 39 people are injured [FJ 5/29].

Arab World: Large contingent of Israeli forces moves into central sector of Israeli iimposed "security zone" in S. Lebanon to stop "terrorists" from crossing the border. UN spokesman claims Israeli troops in southem Lebanon fired on UNIFIL armored car with rifles and artillery. Three Syrian soldiers are killed while manning a check point near Shatila [WT 5/25]. Israel expels 15 Lebanese from S. Lebanon for refusing to cooperate with newly formed "civil administration" [FJ5/29].

Occupied Palestine/Israel: In Jerusalem, U. S. ambassador to the UN, Vernon Walters, seeks Israeli assurances that it will not attack Hizballah positions in Lebanon for fear it may endanger the lives of the hostages held in Beirut [LAT 5/20].

Arab World: Egyptian foreign minister 'Ismat 'Abd al-Magid arrives in Moscow; is expected to sign a major, five-year economic and trade agreement with the U.S.S.R. [WT 5/20].

Military Actio

Occupied Palestine/Israel: Curfews in 'Anabta and Tulkarm enter sixth day, army prevents food, medical supplies from entering [FJ 5/22]. In the village of Salim, IDF uproots almond and olive trees along the main road [FJ 5/22]. In Hebron P. M. Yitzhaq Shamir says that Israel was on the way to restoring "anormal situation" in the occupied territories UP 5/21].

Military Action

Occupied Palestine/Israel: One Palestinian is killed, as many as 15 are wounded, and hundreds arrested as soldiers clash with Arabs in the neighboring villages of 'Ibwayn and 'Arurah. The army uses helicopters, bulldozers, gravel throwers, and military vehicles in attempting house-to-house searches for wanted men [WP 5/19, WT 5/19, FJ 5/22]. Troops shoot 2 Palestinian youths during demonstrations in Nablus [FJ 5/22]. D. M. Yitzhaq Rabin announces that Israeli high school students in paramilitary groups will not be allowed to train in IDF bases in which Palestinian prisoners are kept. This is a result of reports of a 16-year-old Israeli beating Palestinians at the suggestion of Israeli soldiers at the Ofer camp [WP 5/19].

Occupied Palestine/Israel: Israel lifts curfew on Nablus [WP 5/18, NYT 5/18]. Curfew is lifted on Beach camp in Gaza, but area is later declared closed military zone. Israeli officials announce W. Bank schools will reopen in 3 phases, with first phase starting 5/23. Merchants observe near total strike marking second day of three-day feast at the end of Ramadan [WP 5/18].

Other Countries: Iraeli F.M. Shimon Peres visits Washington for talks with Pres. Reagan and Soviet ambassador to U.S. Yuri Dubinin. [NYT 5/18].

Military Action

Occupied Palestine/Israel: Israeli troops wound, capture an Arab gunmanear the Jordanian border [5/18]. IDF troops wound man in Qalandiya refugee camp after man tried to seize gun from a soldier [WP 5/18, NYT 5/18, FJ 5/22]. Israeli police enter Maqassad hospital in East Jerusalem, arrest 3 visitors [FJ 5/22]. Israel reprimands 2 soldiers for firing on a village where a Palestinian was killed on 5/26. One soldier is "severely scolded"; the other is given a suspended 35-day jail sentence [NYT 5/18]. Soldiers sweep through jabalya and Bayt Hanun making arrests [FJ 5/22].

Occupied Palestine/Israel: Washington Post reports at least 1, 700 Palestinians are being held in administrative detention [WP 5/13]. Israel releases nearly 300 prisoners [WP 5/14]. Palestinian wounded in clash with troops 5/5 dies [WP 5/14]. Palestinian youth shot during demonstration weeks ago dies in Ramallah [NYT 5/14]. IDF releases 280 Palestinian prisoners as good will gesture [LAT 5/15].

Occupied Palestine/Israel: In Qabatiyyah village near Jenin, Palestinian is shot dead while trying to escape army raid [FJ 5/15]. In Jerusalem, border and regular police use rubber bullets and night sticks to disperse stone-throwing Palestinian demonstrators after Friday prayers at Dome of the Rock and al-Aqsa mosques; 10 demonstrators are detained and about 20 are arrested; 3 police officers are also injured. Nablus and entire Gaza Strip are under curfew; Ramallah, Hebron, and Bethlehem are declared closed military areas. Worshipers are prevented from attending Gaza City's 'Umar Mosque [WP 5/14; LAT 5/15].

Occupied Palestine/Israel: Palestinian dies of woundsustained 3/30 in Qabatiyyah clash with Israeli troops [WP 5/13; LAT 5/15]. P.M. Shamir visits Hebron. Israeli officials announce schools in occupied territories will begin reopening 5/23 [NYT 5/13].

Occupied Palestine/Israel: In Nablus, soldiers open fire, wounding 5 [WP 5/13]. At Haram al-Sharif, police arrest 38 Palestinians demonstrating after Laylat al-Qadr services; at least 7 are wounded. [WP 5/14; LAT 5/15] In W. Bank village of Qabatiyyah, Palestinian is shot dead while trying to escape arrest [LAT 5/15]. Israel announces daily curfew in Qalqiliyyah from 6 pm to 4 am. Police car is destroyed in firebomb attack in Jericho. Military imposes curfew in Sha'jiyyah and Tuffah quarters of Gaza City following stonethrowing incidents [FJ 5/15].

Arab World: Baghdad sources report PLO Executive Com. has elected Mahmud 'Abbas (Abu Mazin) to replace Khalil al-Wazir (Abu Jihad) as chairman of Palestinian delegation to joint Palestinian-Jordanian com. on occupied territories affairs [FJ 5/8].

Occupied Palestine/Israel: In Gaza Strip, 2 Palestinians are shot dead, another dies from tear gas during fierce clashes in Beach and Jabalya camps. Demonstrations erupt during funerals in spite of curfews; many are injured by tear gas, iron bars. In Salim village, 2 Palestinians are shot, wounded. Balatah camp is put under curfew. Demonstrations are reported in Ramallah district village of Silwad, Am'ari camp, Jenin, Bani Na'im, Bethlehem, and Tulkarm [FJ 5/8]. Army blocks 5 entrances to 'Ayn Bayt al-Ma' refugee camp with concrete-filled barrels [FJ 5/8].

Arab World: Israeli troops attack Lebanese village of Maydun and nearby villages, killing more than 40 Hizballah fighters, before pulling back to S. Lebanon security zone to end "Operation Law and Order"; 3 Israeli soldiers are killed and 17 wounded in fighting [WP 5/5].

Occupied Palestine/Israel: Elderly Palestinian wounded in earlier clash dies [FJ 5/8]. Israeli authorities uproot olive trees in villages of Ras Karkar and al-Janiyyah, west of Ramallah [FJ 5/8]. Physicians at Shifa Hospital in Gaza protest the arrest of Dr. Zakariya al-Agha [FJ 5/8].

Occupied Palestine/Israel: In Bani Na'im village, near Hebron, 2 Palestinians are shot dead after protesters allegedly attacked army patrol. Palestinian is killed by army gunfire in Balatah refugee camp [WP 5/4]. Soldiers raid houses in Duhayshah refugee camp, clash with residents. In Beach camp, protesters block roads, bum tires. Protests erupt in Jabalya, Maghazi, and Dayr al-Balah camps [FJ 5/8].

Arab World: Syrian forces in Lebanon's Biqa' Valley are put on alert as Israeli troops continue house-to-house search for Palestinian commandos in S. Lebanon; UN officials estimate between 1,500 and 2,000 Israeli soldiers are in S. Lebanon [WP 5/4].

Occupied Palestine/Israel: Teenager from W. Bank village of Bayt Wazin is electrocuted while trying to hang Palestinian flag from power cable. Commercial strike continues in W. Bank. Israeli officials order al-Awdah, Arabic and English weekly magazine, closed. Government announces it will begin cutting water and electricity to W. Bank and Gaza Strip towns that do not pay their bills [NYT 5/3]. Dr. Zakariya al-Agha, head of the Arab Medical Association, is arrested, placed under administrative detention for 6 months [FJ 5/8].

Military Action

Occupied Palestine/Israel: Several Balatah camp residents are arrested after military lifts curfew. Soldiers respond with live ammunition and rubber bullets to demonstration in 'Ayn Bayt al-Ma' camp. Several Palestinian protesters are injured by gunfire in 'Askar camp. Scattered demonstrations are reported in Bethlehem region, Ramallah region, and Gaza Strip. Army imposes curfew in 'Arrub camp [FJ 5/8].

Arab World: Led by tanks and helicopters, up to 2,000 Israeli troops cross into Lebanon in search of Palestinian commandos [WP 5/3]. Followers of Abu Musa battle Arafat loyalists in Shatila and Burj al-Barajinah camps; 10 have been killed and 40 wounded in 3 days of fighting [WP 5/3].

Occupied Palestine/Israel: General strike is observed in Nablus. Israeli authorities block entrance to Jaba' village, in Ramallah region [FJ 5/8].

Military Action

Occupied Palestine/Israel: In Jenin-area village of Faqu'a, demonstrators block roads, hang Palestinian flags, and throw rocks at IDF patrol; patrol opens fire, killing 1 Palestinian; unit's deputy commander is suspended when army investigators determine use of live ammunition was not warranted [LAT 5/2]. Several Palestinians are wounded in clash in Tulkarm-district village of Dayr al-Ghussun. Demonstrators also clash with soldiers in Bayt Sahur, Duhayshah camp, Ramallah, and Ram. Curfews continue in 'Anabta and Nur Shams camp [FJ 5/8].
