The Israeli Supreme Court ruled in favor of a Palestinian family in Silwan, ending a 32-year legal battle to have the family displaced. The Jewish National Fund and the settler organization Elad, which had tried to evict the Sumreen family from their home in Silwan since 1991, were also ordered to pay the family $5,560 in compensation. In the West Bank, 1 Israeli settler was shot and injured while driving in Huwwara, Israeli forces then shot, injured, and arrested a Palestinian man alleging that he was the perpetrator and closed a number of checkpoints in the area. Israeli settlers threw stones at Palestinian vehicles traveling near Baytin, causing damage. Israeli forces forced Palestinian farmers to leave their land in al-Khader. In East Jerusalem, 2 Israeli settlers broke into the Church of Gethsemane in the Old City and attempted to vandalize church property before being confronted by a Palestinian. At a summit in Sharm El Sheikh, attended by officials from the PA, Israel, Egypt, Jordan, and the U.S., Israel said it would halt discussions for new settlements for 4 months and halt authorization of settlement outposts for 6 months. The parties also agreed to de-escalate tensions, create a political horizon, and let the PA police Area A. The PA’s participation was criticized and condemned by Hamas, Islamic Jihad, and other Palestinian parties. Speaking in Paris, Israeli finance minister Bezalel Smotrich told the audience at a memorial ceremony that “there is no such thing as Palestinians because there is no such thing as a Palestinian people,” calling the term an invention. Smotrich then said that he and his family are the real Palestinians. The French government had announced that no officials would meet Smotrich during his trip to the country. PA security forces prevented some 150 Palestinians from holding a press conference at the Watan Media Network office in Ramallah. Israeli finance minister and minister in charge of the civil administration at the defense ministry, Bezalel Smotrich, said “Huwwara needs to be wiped out. I think that the State of Israel needs to do that, not, God forbid, private individuals,” when asked about the Israeli settler attack on Huwwara on 2/26. The U.S. State Department spokesperson Ned Price condemned Smotrich’s comments, calling them “irresponsible, repugnant, and disgusting” and calling on Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to reject the comments. UN high commissioner for human rights Volker Türk called the comments “unfathomable.” Later on 3/4, Smotrich said “being upset, I misspoke” and Netanyahu called Smotrich’s statements “inappropriate” in a tweet on 3/5. The Knesset passed the first of three readings of a bill that will reintroduce the death penalty to Palestinians. The legislation stipulates that a person who “causes the death of an Israeli citizen when the act is carried out from a racist motive . . . with the purpose of harming the State of Israel and the rebirth of the Jewish people in its homeland,” can receive the death penalty. Bloomberg reported that Israel and Saudi Arabia have intensified talks on developing a closer military and intelligence sharing relationship. According to Bloomberg sources, the two countries held talks on the sidelines of the U.S.-Gulf Cooperation Council Working Group meeting in Riyadh and are expected to continue talks at the Munich Security Conference in Prague in the coming days. In the West Bank, Israeli forces shot and killed 1 Palestinian man and injured 7 others during a raid in Nablus; 6 were arrested. An Israeli soldier was filmed assaulting the Palestinian human rights activist Issa Amro in Hebron. A video of the incident was circulated by New Yorker journalist Lawrence Wright, who was given a tour of Hebron by Amro at the time of the assault. The Israeli soldier was later sentenced to 10 days in military jail, despite receiving support from Israeli national security minister Itamar Ben-Gvir. 7 Palestinians were arrested during late-night raids in Silwad, al-Mazra‘a al-Gharibiya, Jaba’, Dura, Ein as-Sultan, and Dheisheh refugee camp. In East Jerusalem, a Palestinian 13-year-old allegedly stabbed and killed 1 Israeli soldier at a checkpoint in Shu’fat refugee camp before being shot and injured by a settler. 1 Israeli minor was also stabbed and injured in the Old City; Israeli police later arrested a 14-year-old Palestinian who was said to be a suspect. Israel’s defense minister Yoav Gallant issued an order to financially penalize 87 Palestinian prisoners for having received funds from the PA. Starting on 2/16 Israeli forces raided the homes of the current and former Palestinian prisoners in East Jerusalem, seizing cash, jewelry, and other belongings while freezing their bank accounts. Israeli police informed Palestinian residents of a Wadi Qaddum apartment building in East Jerusalem that Israeli authorities will not demolish the building this week. 2 earthquakes with magnitudes of more than 7.5 and epicenters in southern Turkey killed more than 50,000 people in Turkey and Syria. The PA said that at least 95 Palestinians were killed in Turkey and Syria. In subsequent days 2 smaller 3.5 magnitude earthquakes with epicenters in the West Bank were recorded, with no injuries reported. Israeli forces also notified Palestinian residents of Khirbet Humsa that they have to leave their homes on 10 separate days between 5 and 28 February due to Israeli military drills in the area. The Israeli government requested an extension from the Israeli High Court of Justice on making a decision on the forced displacement of Palestinians from Khan al-Ahmar, pushing the decision to 6/1. U.S. secretary of state Antony Blinken met with Israeli prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu in Israel. The U.S. State Department said that the 2 spoke about Israeli-Palestinian relations and the need for a diplomatic solution. Secretary Blinken met with Egyptian president Abdel Fattah al-Sisi earlier in the day in Cairo. According to Yediot Ahronot, the U.S. offered Netanyahu help with normalizing ties with Saudi Arabia and curbing Iran’s nuclear program if Netanyahu reigns in his far-right coalition partners, ends his plans to weaken the judiciary, and maintain the status quo at the Haram al-Sharif compound.
