During Friday demonstrations in Gaza, 1 Palestinian is killed by live fire in Shuja‘iya when IDF troops violently disperse protesters, marking the 3d Friday in a row a Gaza protester has been killed. Friday demonstrations also take place in 5 areas nr. Ramallah (Bil‘in, Ni‘lin, Nabi Salih, Jalazun r.c. and outside Ofer Prison), Kafr Qaddum nr. Qalqilya, Aida r.c. nr. Bethlehem, at a checkpoint nr. Nablus, in 3 villages nr. Hebron, and in 3 other areas along Gaza’s border; 36 are injured (a 3d Palestinian will succumb to his injuries on 12/28). Hebron to protest the attack, sparking minor clashes with Palestinian stone-throwers. Late at night, IDF troops conduct a raid in Dahaysha r.c. nr. Bethlehem, arresting 5 Palestinians and killing 1 Palestinian in the ensuing clashes with stone-throwers. Meanwhile, IDF troops violently clash with Palestinians protesting their continued presence at Palestine Technical University in Tulkarm; 5 Palestinians are injured. They also conduct late-night house searches and raids in 2 villages nr. Tulkarm, Hebron, 1 village nr. In West Jerusalem, Israeli police shoot and kill a Palestinian nr. the Old City after he allegedly hits 1 Israeli with his car and stabs another, lightly injuring both. On Gaza’s s. border, unknown assailants open fire on IDF vehicles patrolling along the border fence, causing minor damage, according to the IDF. Late at night, IAF jets launch air strikes on a Hamas military site in n. Gaza, causing damage. During the day, IDF troops stationed along the border e. of al-Bureij r.c. violently disperse Palestinian stone-throwers, injuring 1. In the West Bank, IDF troops patrol in 1 village each nr. There are several incidents in the Hebron area today as Israeli forces raid a medical center, assaulting a 14-year-old Palestinian patient; deliver stop-work orders to 3 homes under construction e. of Bayt Umar; and remove the doors and windows from several residences and confiscate drilling equipment in a village nr. In the West Bank, Israeli forces confiscate 4 water pumps and 7 residential tents in the Jordan Valley; deliver a stop-work order to a Palestinian home under construction in a village nr. Hebron. The IDF conducts late-night raids and house searches in Hebron and 1 village nearby, 1 village each nr. Salfit and Tulkarm, 2 villages nr. Ramallah, Jenin, Jenin r.c. and 2 villages nearby, arresting 17 Palestinians; patrols in 7 villages and al-‘Arub r.c. nr. Hebron, and 1 village nr. Qalqilya. In the West Bank, IDF troops arrest a Palestinian woman at a checkpoint in the Jordan Valley after she allegedly attempts to stab an Israeli soldier. In Hebron, Israeli forces raid the Dream Radio station, destroying equipment, damaging offices, and issuing an order to shut the station down for 6 mos., claiming “incitement to violence.” This is the 3d Hebron radio station shut down by the IDF in the last mo., with others being closed on 11/3 and 11/21. IDF troops clash with and violently disperse Palestinians protesting in 2 villages nr. Qalqilya, 1 nr. Ramallah, and at a checkpoint nr. Nablus; 7 Palestinians are injured. In the West Bank, IDF troops clash with and violently disperse Palestinian, Israeli, and international activists at Friday demonstrations against the increased Israeli crackdown and the occupation in villages nr. Ramallah, Bethlehem, and Qalqilya, injuring 44 Palestinians. Israel continues closures of Palestinian areas, shutting down the entrances to 4 villages nr. Nablus. In the evening, IDF troops enter a village n. of Hebron, clashing with stone-throwers and firing tear gas at them; several Palestinians suffer from tear gas inhalation. Other Israeli troops in the village raid 2 homes, arresting 2 Palestinians and issuing summons to 2 others. The IDF conducts additional raids around Dura nr. Hebron and in al-‘Arub r.c. nearby, arresting 16 Palestinians; patrols during the day in the Salfit, Hebron, and Tulkarm areas. Also nr. Salfit, Israeli settlers throw stones at a Palestinian taxi driver and cause minor damage. Unrest continues in Gaza, as IDF troops open fire on protesters gathering along the e. and s. border fences, injuring 29 Palestinians. E. of Jabaliya, Israeli forces open fire on agricultural land along the border fence, causing no injuries. Stabbing and other small-scale violent incidents continue in the occupied Palestinian territories (oPt) and Israel. In Tel Aviv, 2 Palestinians armed with knives attack a group of Israelis at an office building, killing 2 and injuring 2. Israeli police arrest 1 of the attackers and the other flees. Later, IDF troops raid the Hebron-area home of 1 of the suspects, delivering punitive demolition orders and arresting 3. Nr. Bethlehem, a Palestinian driver opens fire in the Gush Etzion settlement bloc, injuring 10 settlers and killing 3 others, including a U.S. citizen. Israeli forces shoot at the driver, causing him to crash his car and killing 1 Palestinian bystander in the crossfire; they arrest the driver at the scene. In c. Hebron, Israeli forces fire tear gas and skunk water, blocking a number of Palestinian children from accessing their school, after a Palestinian allegedly throws a tear gas canister at an Israeli checkpoint and injures a soldier. Elsewhere, a number of Palestinian municipalities in Israel, including Nazareth, Rahat, and Sakhnin, go on strike in protest of the 11/16 outlawing of the Northern Branch of the Islamic Movement. In the West Bank, IDF troops and stone-throwers clash during raids in Dahaysha r.c. and patrols nr. Jenin, injuring 4 Palestinians and arresting 1, respectively. Israeli forces continue their string of late-night house searches and raids in the Hebron, Ramallah, Jalazun r.c., and Dahaysha r.c. areas, arresting 12 Palestinians and issuing arrest summons to 4; patrol during the day nr. Israel’s Coordinator of Govt. Activities in the Territories (COGAT) Unit cmdr. Yoav Mordechai signs an agreement with the PA Minister of Civil Affairs Hassan al-Shaykh to grant Palestinian mobile phone users in the West Bank access to 3G high-speed data services. Following a day of punitive demolitions and clashes in Qalandia refugee camp (r.c.), thousands of Palestinians march in the funeral of the 2 Palestinians killed by Israeli forces the previous day. Later, Israel Defense Forces (IDF) troops clash with stone-throwers in the camp, injuring 5 Palestinians. Israeli forces demolish 9 residential structures and animal barns nr. Hebron early in the morning, and later clash with Palestinian protesters in the area. Similarly, IDF troops violently disperse Palestinian protesters w. of Qalqilya (where similar protests were conducted on 11/13 and 11/15) and outside Beit El settlement nr. Ramallah; at least 15 Palestinians are injured, including 2 journalists. During the day, Israeli forces patrol in 1 village each nr. PM Benjamin Netanyahu’s security cabinet outlaws the Northern Branch of the Islamic Movement in Israel, citing the group’s “dangerous incitement.” After the announcement, Israeli forces arrest a senior mbr. of the movement during a raid in Umm al-Fahm, and Israeli courts issue orders to shut down 17 organizations and groups that operate on behalf of the movement. Amid the ongoing wave of violence, the Israeli authorities proceed with demolition-related activities today. Israeli forces enter Qalandia r.c. and punitively demolish the residence of the Palestinian accused of shooting and killing an Israeli settler on 6/19, sparking clashes with stone-throwing Palestinian youths; 2 Palestinians are killed and 3 are injured. Small-scale attacks, including alleged stabbings, continue to characterize the ongoing wave of violence as it largely shifts to the West Bank. IDF troopsshoot and kill a Palestinian in a village nr. Hebron after he allegedly attempts to stab an Israeli soldier. The IDF later says that the man was killed amid a “violent riot,” but Palestinian witnesses say he was not present for the clashes in the village. A Palestinian driver rams his vehicle into a group of IDF officers nr. a settlement in the Hebron area, injuring 3. Israeli soldiers then open fire on the car, causing damage but no injuries. The driver turns himself in to the IDF hours later. Throughout the day, IDF troops clash with and violently disperse Palestinians protesting in a village nr. Bethlehem and outside a settlement nr. Ramallah; 4 Palestinians are injured. The IDF also patrols in 1 village each nr. Salfit and Hebron; conducts raids and house searches in 1 village each nr. Bethlehem, and Jenin, 3 nr. Hebron, Nablus and 1 village nearby, and Jalazun r.c. and 2 villages nr. Ramallah, arresting 16 Palestinians and confiscating personal property. Israeli settlers destroy a barbed wire fence in a village nr. Jerusalem; ram a Palestinian with a vehicle nr. Qalqilya, causing moderate injuries. Tension remains high in East Jerusalem as right-wing Jewish activists tour Haram al-Sharif under an Israeli police escort in the morning. Israeli forces arrest 11 Palestinians on raids and patrols in the Old City, al-Thawri, Issawiyya, Shu‘fat, and al-Tur. Israeli DM Ya’alon says that Israel will stop returning the bodies of Palestinians killed in violent confrontations with the IDF if they are mourned at mass funerals, as on 10/31 in Hebron. Violence escalates in the West Bank as settlers and Israeli forces continue retaliating against Palestinians in the wake of the 10/1 killing of 2 settlers. Israeli settlers protest on a main road outside Nablus, and the IDF disperses the ensuing clashes with stonethrowing Palestinian youths. Meanwhile, settlers set fire to dozens of olive trees and Palestinian agricultural land nr. Nablus, and throw stones at drivers nr. Salfit, injuring 3 Palestinian medics. A 3d mbr. of the Dawabsha family succumbs to injuries sustained in the Israeli settlers’ arson attack on her Duma home on 7/31 (her husband and 18-mo.-old child were also killed), sparking Palestinian demonstrations across East Jerusalem. Israeli forces violently disperse them in Silwan, al-Tur, and Wadi al-Juz, injuring 2 Palestinians. Meanwhile in the West Bank, Israeli forces assault 3 Palestinians outside a settlement nr. Tensions begin to escalate in East Jerusalem over access to Haram al-Sharif when Israeli forces bar all Palestinians from entering the sanctuary between 7:00 and 11:00 A.M., including children who attend school inside. They also close all but 3 entrances and arrest 3 Palestinians in the area. Later, Israeli forces arrest 2 Palestinians and issue arrest summons to 2 others on raids in Silwan and Sur al-Bahir; violently disperse Palestinian youths accused of throwing stones at Israeli settlers’ vehicles (1 Palestinian is arrested). In Gaza, UNRWA employees go on strike in protest of overcrowded schools and unpaid vacations (they will end their strike on 8/31). An Israeli court holds the 1st witness hearing for Palestinian MP and political prisoner Khalida Jarrar (Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine, PFLP) after postponing it 3 times. Only 2 witnesses were allowed to testify due to “time constraints,” and both claimed that their confessions were obtained through “torture and ill treatment” by Israeli forces, according to Addameer Prisoner Support and Human Rights Association. In the West Bank, the IDF orders temporary alterations to its rules of engagement, responding to the increased tensions since the 7/31 arson attack. Israeli soldiers are now required to hold their fire unless their lives are in immediate danger, and are only permitted to fire shots in the air toward a fleeing suspect rather than at the lower body. Israeli forces demolish multiple residential units in the n. Jordan Valley overnight. IDF troops conduct raids in c. Hebron and a nearby village, arresting 1 Palestinian and assaulting and lightly injuring 2; patrol in 1 village each nr. Hebron, Qalqilya, and Salfit.
