One day after the U.S.-based home-share company Airbnb announced it would no longer offer listings in Israel’s West Bank settlements, Israel’s Tourism Minister Yariv Levin says that the Israeli government intends to “act on several levels” to get the decision reversed. “First, we have turned to the management of the company, demanding that the decision be canceled,” he says. “We will help apartment owners to file claims in the U.S. in order to reach a situation that at least the company will have to compensate them for the damage it causes them.” (HA, TOI 11/21)

A senior IDF officer says that the IDF recently identified a new Hezbollah observation post built to look like an environmental NGO site along the Israel-Lebanon border. It is the 6th such site the IDF has identified this year. “Hezbollah is building military infrastructure along the border with its men moving there armed when they are watching the Israeli border,” the officer says. “This is military infrastructure in civilian guise.” A UNIFIL spokesperson responds, rejecting Israel’s claim that there are armed forces in border zone. “UNIFIL has not observed any unauthorized armed persons at the locations or found any basis to report a violation of [UNSC] Resolution 1701 but continues to monitor activities closely.”  (HA, JP, TOI 10/22)

At the start of a PA cabinet meeting in Ramallah, PA president Abbas accuses Hamas of perpetrating the 3/13 assassination attempt on PA PM Hamdallah and threatens further punitive restrictions on Gaza. Hamas later responds in a statement: “[Abbas] is paving the way for chaos which will facilitate the approval of President Trump’s plan and Israel’s plans. The U.S. State Department announces that the new U.S. embassy in Israel will open in Jerusalem in 5/2018, implementing President Trump’s 12/6/17 pledge to move the embassy from Tel Aviv. Israel’s security cabinet approves a 40% reduction in the transfer of electricity to Gaza, acquiescing to the PA’s 4/27 request (see JPS 46 [4]). The security cabinet also discusses a proposal to build an artificial island off Gaza’s coast to host a port to facilitate economic growth and alleviate the region’s humanitarian crisis. The Israeli Knesset’s Ministerial Comm. for Legislation approves a bill to deduct from Israel’s monthly transfers of tax revenues to the PA a sum equal to the amount the PA pays to Palestinians convicted of serious crimes against Israelis and their families. The bill is modeled after similar legislation introduced in the U.S. Congress in 2/2017 (see H.R. 1164 of 2/16/2017 and S. 474 of 2/28/2017 at congressionalmonitor.org, as well as H.R. 1164 of 2/16/2017). A total of 3 Palestinians and 1 Israeli settler are killed across the West Bank. In a contested incident, an Israeli settler and former Samaria Regional Council head rams a Palestinian youth with his car after she allegedly attempts to stab another settler at a checkpoint nr. Nablus; the girl is shot and killed at the scene. There are conflicting reports around the shooting, with some outlets alleging the driver shot the girl and others claiming it was either another settler or IDF soldiers stationed at the nearby Huwwara checkpoint. A Palestinian taxi driver is shot and killed hours later nr. Kefar Adumim settlement by an Israeli settler, who claims that the driver attempted to ram a group of settlers on a main road nr. Bethlehem. According to the IDF, the settler opened fire after he saw the Palestinian taxi driver exit his car with a knife. However, Palestinian eyewitnesses report that Israeli settlers threw stones at the taxi, causing the driver to swerve into another car. In the final of such incidents, IDF troops shoot and kill a Palestinian after he stabs and seriously injures an Israeli settler at the Gush Etzion junction nr. Bethlehem (the settler succumbs to her injuries later in the day). As the wave of violence and the corresponding Israeli crackdown continue, a Palestinian stabs and injures 4 Israelis in Kiryat Gat, then flees the scene. A crowd of Israelis assaults and binds a bedouin Palestinian they mistake for the assailant, causing minor injuries. Israeli forces arrest the suspect hours later. Meanwhile, Israeli forces shoot and injure a Palestinian driver who was attempting to pass quickly through a checkpoint nr. In Egypt, the Sinai Province of the Islamic State (SPIS) says on its Facebook page that it plans to attack Eilat, Israel, “in the coming days.” (SPIS will launch a rocket into Israel on 7/3.) According to Egyptian media reports, SPIS also threatens to “begin operations against Hamas positions” in Gaza. The threat comes amid escalating tension between Hamas and Islamist groups in Gaza.
