The Palestine Chronology

In the West Bank, Israeli forces fired tear gas near a school in ‘Anata, injuring students and staff. In East Jerusalem, Israeli settlers led by former MK Yehuda Glick toured the Haram al-Sharif compound. Israeli forces assaulted 1 Palestinian at the Damascus Gate Plaza, injuring and arresting him. Israeli authorities demolished 1 commercial structure in Jabel Mukaber. In Gaza, 5 Palestinians were killed and 25 others injured in an explosion during a protest near the Gaza fence. Palestinian officials said the 5 were killed when an explosive device accidentally exploded. 1 other Palestinian succumbed to wounds from the explosion on 9/17. Israeli forces also violently dispersed protesters east of Gaza City, injuring 9, including 3 minors. Palestinians marked the anniversary of the 2005 Israeli withdrawal from Gaza. 6 Palestinians were killed, including 3 members of Fatah, and 15 were wounded during fighting in Ain al-Hilweh refugee camp. The fighting reignited despite a ceasefire agreement from 9/11. 16 people have been killed since 9/7 when fighting broke out again after a month of relative quiet. Hamas and Islamic Jihad called for an immediate ceasefire after a meeting between Hamas Political Bureau deputy chairperson Moussa Abu Marzouk and Islamic Jihad secretary general Ziyad al-Nakhalah in Beirut. In Syria, Israeli forces conducted air strikes in Tartus on 2 separate occasions, killing 2 Syrian soldiers and wounding 6 others. Israeli forces also attacked the Shuairat military airport in the Homs province and several places in the Hama province, causing damage. Israeli defense minister Yoav Gallant appeared to brag about the attacks on 9/14 at an event with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu when he said, “[e]ven last night, we saw proof that in the State of Israel the thunder of planes is louder than all the background noise.” (AJ, AP, HA 9/13; ALM, HA 9/14)

In an interview with the podcast Pod Save the World, U.S. secretary of state Antony Blinken said that “what we hear from the Saudis that if this process [normalization between Israel and Saudi Arabia] is to move forward, the Palestinian piece is going to be very important,” further stating that “in our judgement, of course, that must – needs to involve a 2-state solution.” (HA 9/13)

The U.S. signed a security agreement called the “Comprehensive Security Integration and Prosperity Agreement” with Bahrain, pledging to defend the country from attacks. (NYT 9/13)

UK foreign secretary James Cleverly said the UK will support UNRWA with $12.5 million during a visit to Jalazun refugee camp where he met with UNRWA commissioner-general Philippe Lazzarini. (QDS, WAFA 9/13)

Anti-Defamation League of B'nai B'rith (ADL) agrees to San Francisco court injunction not to use illegal means to gather information. ADL was found to have access to police files on Arab Americans, among other groups, and was accused in criminal investigation of providing information to South Africa and Israel. Civil suits by targets of ADL investigations remain open. (WP 11/16)

Arab World: Al-Safir, Beirut daily, carries attacks on PLO political advisor Abu Sharif's peace proposals circulated at the recent Arab Summit. Groups attacking statement are: PFLP, Fateh-Uprising, Popular Struggle Front, the PFLP-General Command, and Partisans of the Islamic Revolution in Palestine [NYT 6/22].

Occupied Palestine/Israel: Israeli is found beaten and stabbed to death near Moshav Shaked [WP 6/21, NYT 6/21]. In Jalazun refugee camp 120 residents are arrested during demonstrations [FJ 6/26]. In Ramallah troops use tear gas to break up demonstrations [FJ 6/26].

Occupied Palestine/Israel: Ma'ariv survey of 1,152 Israelis reveals support for Likud party has risen from 33% in January to 39% in April, while support for Labor party has fallen from 46% in January to 38% in April [NYT 5/8]. Military renews order closing W. Bank schools [FJ 5/8].

Occupied Palestine/Israel: In W. Bank and Gaza Strip, Israeli authorities prevent shops from opening in morning. Large demonstration breaks out at al-Aqsa Mosque following prayers. At least 3 Palestinians are wounded by army gunfire in Gaza Strip. Curfews are in force in Qalqiliyyah, Jabalya camp, Beach camp, and parts of Rafah camp [FJ 5/8].

Arab World: In Shatila refugee camp, south of Beirut, fighting continues between Fateh and dissident commandos; PLO spokesman reports at least 5 are killed and 25 wounded [WP 5/7; MET 5/19]. Fateh fighters defeat dissidents in 'Ayn al-Hilwah refugee camp [WP 5/7].

Occupied Palestine/Israel: Several thousand people, including several Jews, march to commemorate 30th anniversary of 1956 Kafr Qasim massacre (WP 10/30).

Other Countries: Le Monde reports that Syria helped France reach "truce" with group believed to have exploded bombs in Paris. "Truce" will last until February when Georges Ibrahim 'Abdallah is to stand trial. Meanwhile, Saudi newspaper publishes interview with French interior minister saying Syrian and French secret services were involved in "real cooperation" to prevent terrorist bombings (NYT, WP 10/30).

Arab World: In Lebanon, Palestinian Amal rocket and artillery battles spread to Beirut suburb Burj al-Barajinah, which has been quiet since the summer when 200 were killed in Palestinian camps. Druze leader Walid Jumblatt warns Palestinians against using south Lebanon for "military adventurism." AP reports UN and Palestinian sources estimate 3,500 Palestinian guerrillas have returned to refugee camps in Lebanon in past six months (NYT, WP 10/30). Syria begins formation of joint leftist force to fight Fateh in the Lebanese camps. Force would comprise fighters from Druze Progressive Socialist party, Lebanese Ba'th, Syrian Social Nationalist party, and Lebanese Communist party (JP 10/30).

Occupied Palestine/Israel: Egyptian and Israeli negotiators on Taba dispute announce agreement on all but two conditions for arbitration: arbitrators and demarcation of boundaries of 700-meter beach [NYT, WP 8/11].

Arab World: In Baghdad, PLO Executive Committeends 2-day meeting with statement condemning U.S., Israeli, and jordanian plans to improve conditions in West Bank and Gaza as attempts to perpetuate Israeli occupation, calls for unity among all Palestinian factions [NYT 8/11; FJ 8/14].

Arab World: IDF helicopter gunships attack Fateh and Abu Musa faction positions at 'Ain al-Hilwah and Mieh Mieh refugee camps in S. Lebanon following rocket attacks from S. Lebanon into Galilee [NYT, WP 8/111. Rivals for control of the Christian militias in Lebanon strike each other: Lebanese Forces rebel against leader Samir Ja'ja' and seize control of East Beirut [PI 8/11], hold it for 24 hours [LT 8/12].

Colonel Emanuel Wald, former head of IDF planning, had accused the army on Israel TV of having buried his 700-page report on IDF weaknesses. Four men and 2 women, all of Nablus, are indicted by military court for kidnap-murder of Israeli soldier David Manos and membership in Fateh. Ibrahim 'Abdallah of Dayr Ballut is named ringleader [JP, JTA 5/21]. Italian Foreign Minister Andreotti meets deposed Hebron Deputy Mayor Mustafa Natshah, Gaza lawyer Fayez Abu Rahmah, deposed Gaza Mayor Rashad al-Shawwa, and al-Fajr editor Hanna Siniora [FJ 5/23].
