In response to the mortar attack on Gilo on 10/18, the IDF sends tanks, bulldozers into Bethlehem, Bayt Jala; occupies 10 Palestinian buildings in Bethlehem (including 2 hotels to house troops), several in Bayt Jala. The incursions spark clashes, which leave 3 Palestinians dead and at least 16 Palestinians, 1 IDF soldier injured. In Ramallah, 2 Palestinians are killed by IDF shelling; a 6th Palestinian is killed in Gaza. IDF tanks completely surround Bayt Sahur, Nablus, Qalqilya. The IDF also directs shells, heavy machine gun fire at Bayt Hanina, Hebron, Jinin, Khan Yunis, Tulkarm; occupies a Palestinian home nr. Qarni crossing. Several hrs. after entering Jinin on 8/13, the IDF withdraws. Significant exchanges of gunfire btwn. Bayt Jala and neighboring Gilo settlement prompt the IDF to reinforce positions around Bayt Jala, Bayt Sahur, Bethlehem during the day, raising speculation that a 2d Jinin-style operation is planned. The IDF does not move into these towns but does direct heavy machine gun fire at Bayt Jala; occupy 3 buildings outside Bayt Jala; enter, impose curfews on 3 nearby villages in area C. Israeli DM Ben-Eliezer says he suspended an incursion after the PA began to restrain gunmen in Bayt Jala. Israel announces it will allow 459 trucks carrying food and fuel to enter Gaza. Israeli-Palestinian clashes continue at a high level. In Gaza, IDF tanks, bulldozers enter Rafah; demolish the PA military intelligence headquarters, 17 Palestinian homes, 40 stores; damage 13 stores. Over 160 Palestinians are left homeless, 43 are injured. An Egyptian woman on the Egyptian side of the Rafah border is wounded by gunfire. Palestinians fire 2 mortars at Gush Katif settlement, causing no damage. A bomb explodes in the Gaza City home of Muhammad Nassar, a bodyguard for Hamas spiritual leader Shaykh Ahmad Yasin, killing Nassar, injuring 4; the PA says Nassar was preparing a bomb. Israel admits that the car bomb incident in Ramallah on 4/12 was a "failed attempt" on Fatah's Abu Hmeid. Israeli-Palestinian clashes continue, leaving 2 Palestinian dead. In Ramallah, the PA arrests 2 Palestinian collaborators for allegedly working with Israel to assassinate Fatah tanzim leader Nassir Abu Hmeid with a car bomb today. The PSF removes the car to its Ramallah headquarters where it blows up as an IDF helicopter hovers overhead. The IDF shells residential areas of Bayt Hanun, Rafah. Jewish settlers demolish part of a Palestinian store in Hebron, attack a Palestinian school in Bayt Furik, beat senseless a Palestinian nr. Khan Yunis. As Israeli-Palestinian clashes continue, a 10-yr.-old Palestinian boy is found dead nr. Neve Ya'aqov settlement. The IDF directs shells, heavy machine gun fire at residential areas of Bayt Hanun, Khan Yunis; conducts an arrest sweep in Ithna village nr. Hebron. Israeli-Palestinian clashes continue, leaving 2 Palestinians dead. Palestinians step up attacks on Jewish settlements, with Fatah's Bethlehem branch issuing a leaflet calling on Palestinians to target Gilo specifically, but cause no injuries; Palestinians reportedly fire an antitank missile that causes no damage. The IDF directs heavy machine gun, rocket-propelled grenade fire at residential areas of Khan Yunis, forcing many families to flee their homes, severely damaging 20 homes, a mosque; directs shells, heavy machine gun fire at residential areas of Aida camp, al-Azza camp, Beitunia, al-Bireh, and al-Khadir, Ramallah, al-Tuffah destroying 11 Palestinian homes, 1 Red Crescent ambulance; bulldozes Palestinian land nr. A Likud spokesman say Sharon, Barak have agreed on most guidelines for a national unity government, including a joint peace platform aiming only at reaching an interim agmt. with the PA and an agmt. that no new settlements would be built, though existing ones would be expanded. As Israeli-Palestinian clashes continue, 2 bombs explode on a bus in Tel Aviv, injuring 13 Israelis, and a roadside bomb detonates in Gaza, killing 1 IDF soldier, 1 Israeli border policeman, injuring 2 other soldiers. Israel seals the borders of the West Bank, Gaza. Jewish settlers attack Palestinian homes nr. Hebron. The IDF bulldozes 115 dunams of agricultural land nr. Bayt Hanun. Pres. Clinton tells Arafat he sees no point in further discussion with the PA until Arafat accepts the 12/23 parameters, stating the U.S. will not reply to the PA's 12/27 letter. Just before Arafat meets with Clinton in Washington, Israel assassinates senior Fatah cmdr. Hussayn Ubayyat in Bayt Sahur, tracking him by helicopter and shelling his car, also killing 2 Palestinian bystanders, wounding his aide and at least 6 bystanders. After their mtg., neither Arafat nor Clinton express hope that Israeli-Palestinian clashes will end soon; the U.S. does not condemn the Israeli attack. Israeli-Palestinian clashes continue throughout the day. In addition to the fatalities fr. the Ubayyat assassination, a 4th Palestinian is shot dead by the IDF. In nr. Rafah, the IDF bulldozes 100s of dunams of agricultural land, demolishes 2 Palestinian homes, evacuates a 3d to create a new IDF outpost. The IDF also clears lands around the main road of Nazlit Issa village nr. Tulkarm, demolishes several greenhouses nr. Jinin. Jewish settlers set fire to 100 dunams of Palestinian crops outside Qalqilya, attack Palestinians and Palestinian property in Hebron and around Jinin.
