In the West Bank, Israeli settlers set fire to 3 olive trees in Tel Rumeida in Hebron. 14 Palestinians were arrested during late-night raids in Dheisheh refugee camp, ad-Doha, al-Asakra, Bil’in, Turmus ‘Ayya, Jalazun refugee camp, Ya’bad, Burqin, and Bardala; Israeli forces injured 1 with live ammunition and others with tear gas during the raid in Dheisheh refugee camp. In East Jerusalem, Israel forced 1 Palestinian man to demolish his commercial structure in Silwan. Israeli authorities also issued 3 demolition orders for homes in Silwan. 4 Palestinians were arrested during raids in Silwan. Fighting broke out in Ain al-Hilweh refugee camp in Lebanon after Palestinian Islamist groups launched attacks, injuring 6. A committee of Palestinian factions in the camp had announced on 9/5 that security forces would begin raids to find the accused killers of Fatah general Mohammad al-Armoushi who was killed on 7/30. The security forces also said that on 9/8 they would begin clearing militants who have been occupying UNRWA-run schools in the camp. (AP 9/8)

The Israeli Civil Administration advanced plans for creating 22 solar power plants in West Bank settlements. Haaretz reported that the plans were approved 2 weeks ago. A source in the Civil Administration told the newspaper that Palestinians will not be able to decide not to purchase electricity generated in the settlements. (HA 9/7)

The U.S., Germany, the UK, and the EU condemned remarks by PA president Mahmoud Abbas, who said in a speech at the Fatah Revolutionary Council that Adolf Hitler killed European Jews over ‘social functions’ such as usury, rather than out of anti-Semitism. Paris mayor Anne Hidalgo also stripped Abbas of the Grand Vermeil de Paris medal which he received from her in 2015. Abbas’ remarks were published by the pro-Israel group Middle East Media Research Institute which is known for distorting statements by critics of Israel. Spokesperson for Abbas, Nabil Abu Rudeineh, said Abbas was quoting American and Jewish historians and that he “full[ly] condemn[ed]” the Holocaust and anti-Semitism. U.S. national security advisor Jake Sullivan told reporters that “[m]any of the elements of a pathway to normalization [between Israel and Saudi Arabia] are now on the table. In the West Bank, Israeli forces raided Ni‘lin and punitively demolished the family home of a Palestinian man who was killed after he allegedly killed 1 Israeli woman in Tel Aviv on 3/9; 2 Palestinians were injured by live ammunition while protesting the demolition. The punitive demolition was carried out in a 4-story apartment building on the second floor with explosives, causing damage to other apartments. Israeli forces also shot and injured 2 Palestinians during a raid in Qabatiya. Elsewhere, Israeli forces issued a demolition order for a house under construction in Tura. Israeli forces also seized 2 tractors in Deir Sharaf. The head of the Israeli police’s operational division Sigal Bar-Zvi said that Israel should declare a state of emergency over the continuing rise in gun violence in the Palestinian cities and towns in Israel. So far this year, 80 Palestinian citizens of Israel have been murdered. Bar-Zvi blamed organized crime for the rise in the murder rate. (HA 5/24)

Haaretz reported that the second largest Israeli spyware company QuaDream had announced that it would shut down due to its failure to get authorization from the Israeli Defense Ministry to sell its Reign spyware to Morocco and other new clients. Morocco was reportedly barred by Israel from buying QuaDream’s spyware as it had used NSO Group’s Pegasus spyware to target senior officials in Europe, including French president Emmanuel Macron. Gaza saw the highest COVID-19 death toll in a 24-hour period as 23 Palestinians died in Gaza of the virus. 761 people have died of COVID-19 in Gaza since the start of the pandemic. This occurred as Israel reopened society after vaccinating the majority of people within the Green Line while refusing to provide vaccinations to the people in its occupied territory. PA president Mahmoud Abbas spoke, via video link, at the annual J Street conference, where he said that the PA is “ready to resume negotiations with our Israeli counterpart on the basis of international legitimacy, resolutions and signed agreements and under the auspices of the International Quartet.” He also said that moving away from a 2-state solution would lead to apartheid. President Abbas also commended the Biden administration for resuming aid and restoring bilateral relations. (HA 4/18)

Israel and Greece signed a defense procurement deal worth $1.65 billion. According to the deal, the Greek air force will get a training center operated by Elbit Systems, and Elbit will maintain the Greek air force fleet for 20 years. More than 50 members of the U.S. congress called, in a letter, on U.S. ambassador David Friedman to condemn violence committed by Israeli settlers in the same manner he condemns violence committed by Palestinians. The European Court of Human Rights ruled that the French courts had violated freedom of expression when 12 people from the BDS movement were convicted of inciting racism and anti-Semitism for distributing leaflets calling for boycotts of Israeli goods. The PA informs the Israeli govt. that it will no longer be paying for the electricity that Israel supplies to the Gaza Strip, marking a major change in the PA’s policy toward Hamas’s control over Gaza. The move comes amid an escalating electricity shortage in Gaza, and also follows reports that PA pres. Abbas has been planning to increase pressure on Hamas to give up control of the Gaza Strip. The PA generally pays Israel about NIS 40 m. (approx. $11 m.) per mo. to provide Gaza with around 30% of the electricity it requires. Israel takes the electricity fees out of the taxes it collects on behalf of the PA.
