Occupied Palestine/Israel: Thousands attend Land Day protests held in Taybah village, Dayr Hanna, Kafr Saba, and Tel Sheva, in the Negev; rallies were organized by Rakah Communist party, National Committee of Arab Mayors, and the National Committee for the Protection of the Land [MG 3/31; JTA 4/1]. Palestinian shopkeepers in East Jerusalem close shops to commemorate 10th anniversary of Land Day, which coincided with Easter this year [LAT, TS 3/31].

Military Action

Arab World: Fighting continues for 3rd day between Palestinian and Shi'ite gunmen around Sabra and Shatila refugee camps; 6 Palestinians and 4 Shi'ites have been killed, and 40 people wounded [TS, NYT, BG 3/3 1]. Two UNIFIL, 1 SLA soldier die in 3 separate clashes over the weekend [JP 3/30; JTA 3/31].

Arab World: Arafat deputy Salah Khalaf (Abu Iyad) states Cairo Declaration means PLO retains right to use violence in all territories occupied by Israel, including Israel proper [FT 11/12].

Military Action

Occupied Palestine/Israel: Palestinian is killed when bomb he is making explodes in his hands; military refuse to release name of victim, from Nakhlin village near Bethlehem [NYT 11/12]. Palestinian student, 17, is shot and wounded in confrontation with Israeli settler after students stone his car in Nablus; Israeli military close Qadri Tuqan school in Nablus and arrest 17 Palestinian students [NYT 11/12; JTA 11/13].

Other Countries: Newsweek reports combined unit of Israeli and SLA troops last week forced their way through Norwegian UNIFIL roadblock, exchanged gunfire and seized a jeep and machine gun. Norway filed an official protest with Israeli ambassador in Oslo, sent fact-finding team to Israel to investigate [NWK 11/11].

Occupied Palestine/Israel: High Court rejects petition by MK Kahane to cancel Knesset's 12/18 decision to strip Kahane of parliamentary immunity with regard to freedom of movement; orders Kahane to pay IS 500,000 court costs [JP 4/2]. Foreign Min. official David Kimche tells UN diplomat Jean-Claude Aime that Israel does not want UNIFIL troops to be deployed along Israel-Lebanon border after IDF withdrawal [JP 4/2]. Inner cabinet unanimously approves plan to exchange 1,150 prisoners held by Israel for 3 IDF soldiers held by PFLP-GC in Syria (see 5/20/85) [JP 5/22].

Other Countries: US State Dept. spokesman Bernard Kalb, referring to 3/31 report by West Bank Data Base Project, states US opposed to W. Bank settlements, feels that settlement activity does not preclude chances for negotiated settlement [JP, JTA 4/2].

Occupied Palestine/Israel: Border Police shoot and injure 4 students after stonethrowing incident during Land Day protest outside Bethlehem U. [LAT, JP 4/2]. IDF order settlers to evacuate hill near Umm Safa after they began clearing land for an illegal settlement in response to 3/31 killing of settler in Ramallah [JP 4/2].

Arab World: Action in S. Lebanon: IDF convoy attacked with RPGs near Jwaiyeh. 8 Katyushas fired at IDF position, Douer; no casualties reported. 2 SLA soldiers killed during ambush near 'Arab Salim [JP 4/2]. IDF soldier injured 3/30 in Douer, S. Lebanon, dies of wounds [JP 4/2].

SociaUEconomic/Political

Occupied Palestine/Israel: 3,000 demonstrate in Nazareth in solidarity with Palestinians in occupied territories [FJ 2/22].

Arab World: Fateh Deputy-in-command Khalil al-Wazir denies PLO has given "mandate to anyone" to speak on its behalf [WP 2/16]. UNIFIL cmdr. Gen. Callaghan strongly protests IDF's 2/14 confrontation with French UN troops at Burj Rahhal, S. Lebanon [DT 2/16].

Other Countries: Gush Emunim movement, Israel Aliyah Center begin immigration drive in 5 US cities offering American Jews memberships inW. Bank settlements of Ariel, Elon Moreh, Kedumim and Kiryat Arba for $1,000 [JW 2/15].

Military Action

Arab World: IDF liaison office building fired upon, SLA patrol attacked in Nabatiya, S. Lebanon; no injuries [JTA 2/15].
