In the Gaza Strip, hundreds of Fatah supporters gather in al-Katiba Square in Gaza City to mark the 10th anniversary of the death of Yasir Arafat, despite the cancellation (11/9) of the official ceremony. In the West Bank, IDF troops violently disperse a group of Palestinians throwing rocks and Molotov cocktails at passing Israeli settlers’ cars outside al-‘Arub r.c. nr. Hebron, killing 1 with live ammunition. On separate patrols nr. Hebron and Nablus, IDF troops shoot and wound 3 Palestinians. Also, the IDF conducts house searches and arrest raids in Hebron. Across the West Bank, Palestinians mark the anniversary of Arafat’s death with demonstrations, and clashes of differing intensity break out with Israeli troops in some 30 villages, mostly nr. Bethlehem and Hebron. Israeli settlers attack Palestinian homes nr. Hebron and, separately, settlers vandalize industrial equipment nr. Nablus. Off the coast of the Gaza Strip nr. al-Sudaniyya, Israeli naval forces open fire on Palestinian fishing boats, causing damage but no injuries. A PFLP suicide bomber fr. Askar r.c. nr. Nablus detonates a device in a Tel Aviv open-air market, killing 3 Israelis, wounding 32. The PFLP says that the bombing was carried out to warn Palestinian leaders against being “seduced into talking about ending the resistance and haggling over the national legitimate rights and principles of our people” now that Arafat is out of the West Bank. In the evening, IDF undercover units raid Nablus, assassinate Nablus AMB leader Majdi Mari (whom it attempted to assassinate on 9/15/04), AMB mbrs. Jihad Abu Salah and Fadi al-Sarwan, injure a 4th AMB mbr., 4 bystanders. During the day, the IDF closes the Qalandia checkpoint, declaring the area a closed military zone (see 10/16); fatally shoots 2 Palestinians allegedly attempting to infiltrate Kefar Darom; fires on a group of stone-throwing Palestinian children in Askar r.c., killing a 12-yr.-old Palestinian boy; stops, argues with, shoots and wounds 2 Palestinian teenagers walking nr. the separation wall nr. Jayyus; fires on stone-throwing youths in Jenin r.c.; bulldozes 39 d. of olive groves and greenhouses, 1 Palestinian home nr. Dayr al-Balah; conducts arrest raids, house searches in ‘Anza nr. Israel says it will bar Arafat fr. attending Christmas celebrations in Bethlehem for the 3d straight yr. The IDF imposes a curfew on, raids Balata r.c., firing on stonethrowing youths who confront the troops, killing a nearby Palestinian child, wounding at least 10; sends troops into Halhul nr. Hebron as school lets out, firing on stone-throwing Palestinian children, wounding 1, arresting 1, damaging a clearly marked press vehicle driven by an AP cameraman, who says soldiers deliberately opened fire on him with live ammunition; conducts arrest raids, house searches nr. After the U.S. capture of Iraqi pres. Saddam Hussein on 12/14, Israel acknowledges that in 1992 it aborted a plan to assassinate Hussein after 5 IDF soldiers were killed on 11/5/92 in a training exercise practicing the operation. (MM 12/16; WT 12/17) 

The IDF fatally shoots a Palestinian who allegedly fails to stop at a roadblock; places a curfew on Palestinian villages nr. a settler bypass road outside Dayr al-Balah. In apparent reaction to the IDF shooting of a car carrying 3 children on 7/25, AMB gunmen fire on a Jewish settler vehicle nr. Har Gilo settlement, nr. Bethlehem, injuring a Jewish settler, her 3 children. Arafat releases the 17 AMB mbrs. fr. detention in his compound (see 8/2) after they promise to adhere to the cease-fire; the PA says it was unwilling to risk a confrontation with the AMB over the men’s arrest. Senior Hamas mbr. Ali Alan, an IDF soldier are killed in an exchange of gunfire nr. Bethlehem; a 2d IDF soldier is injured. The IDF fatally shoots senior Hamas mbr. Nasir Assida nr. Nablus in what may be an assassination. A 3d Palestinian dies of injuries received on 3/17. The IDF also demolishes a Palestinian home nr. The IDF also seals the West Bank, Gaza for Purim (3/17–19); fires on residential areas of Khan Yunis, killing 1 Palestinian; fatally shoots a 2d Palestinian standing in his doorway in Rafah; bulldozes 2 dunams of land, 12 olive trees in Dayr al-Balah; raids areas around Bethlehem, Salfit. Arafat cancels the al-Azhar University workers union elections, fearing a landslide victory by Hamas, Islamic Jihad. The IDF makes a predawn raid on Bayt Lahia, firing on residential areas (killing 1 Palestinian sleeping on his roof), arresting 3 relatives of a wanted Hamas mbr.; fires on residential areas of Dayr al-Balah (seriously injuring a 12-yr.-old Palestinian boy), Khan Yunis; arrests local AMB leader Yahya Dahamsa in Bethlehem, demolish his rented home; demolishes the family homes of relatives of 3 other Palestinian militants elsewhere; shoots at 2 PRCS ambulances in Gaza, disabling 1. In response to the 2 suicide attacks on 3/9, the IDF destroys Arafat's Gaza City headquarters, firing 30 missiles at the compound fr. the air, sea. IDF sends 50 tanks, APCs into Qalqilya; continues operations in Dahaysha (demolishing at least 4 Palestinian houses); directs shells, heavy machine gun fire at residential areas of Beitunia, Hebron, Jabaliya, Jalazone, Khan Yunis, Tal al-Sultan; blows up the house of senior AMB mbr. As U.S. envoy Zinni meets with PA officials, an Islamic Jihad suicide bomber detonates a device on a bus in Hadera, Israel, killing 3 Israelis, wounding 7. The bomber reportedly boarded the bus in the Israeli Arab town of Umm al-Fahm. A Palestinian gunman also kills 1 IDF soldier in a drive-by shooting at a West Bank checkpoint. The IDF opens fire on a Palestinian car at a Jordan Valley checkpoint, killing 2 Palestinians that "acted suspiciously" by making a U-turn to avoid the congested crossing. The IDF also opens fire on a French delegation (135 politicians, journalists, intellectuals) touring homes demolished by the IDF in Khan Yunis; seals Hebron; sets up more roadblocks, especially on the road to Bethlehem; tightens the closure on Tulkarm, bulldozing areas along the Green Line; raids a Palestinian factory nr. Qarni crossing, confiscating electrical equipment; directs heavy machine gun fire on residential areas of Jinin; shells residential areas of Khan Yunis. The IDF pulls out of Bayt Rima. Heavy clashes continue in Bethlehem and Tulkarm, leaving a total of 5 Palestinians dead, including a Hamas mbr. killed by an IDF sniper in Bethlehem. The IDF also shells residential areas of Rafah; bulldozes a Palestinian home in Dayr al-Balah; conducts an arrest raid in Jinin. Journalists in Gaza report that the IDF bulldozing is "methodically creating free-fire [buffer] zones along the periphery of the Strip." (NYT, REU 10/25; HA, NYT, WP 10/26; LAW 10/31)

Sharon briefs his cabinet on U.S. demands for Israel to withdraw fr. areas A. Afterward, he reiterates that the IDF will only pull back if the PA adheres to stringent cease-fire demands, including the arrest and extradition of "terrorists." The cabinet declares that Israel "reserves the right to freedom of activity." In response, the U.S. convenes the trilateral security comm., and envoys fr. the EU, Russia, the UN, and the U.S. meet with Arafat. After the PA pledges that areas A would not be used as staging areas for attacks on Israel after a withdrawal, Israel agrees to begin pulling out of reoccupied Palestinian towns by 10/28. In response to Islamic Jihad gunfire in the Jordan Valley that leaves a Jewish settler dead, Peres sides with Sharon against holding a mtg. with Arafat. Fatah tanzim leaders, a senior mbr. of the Fatah-linked AMB state that, despite Arafat's recent calls, they will continue to view the IDF and settlers in the West Bank and Gaza as legitimate targets. Palestinians fire 1 mortar at a Jewish settlement in Gaza, causing no damage. Israel's new 18 mi. buffer zone along the Green Line n. of Jerusalem goes into effect. The IDF bulldozes 20 dunams of Palestinian land nr. Oranit settlement; declares the Hebron market a closed military zone; begins work on a new settlement bypass road to Kefar Darom, damaging agricultural land, water networks belonging to Dayr al-Balah residents; conduct arrest raids in villages around Bethlehem, Qalqilya, Salfit; confiscates 1 Palestinian home in Harmala for use as an IDF outpost; reinforces the closure on Jinin. Another Israeli injured in the 6/1 bombing dies, raising the toll to 19. The PA accuses the IDF of attempting to assassinate senior Islamic Jihad mbr. Muhammad Bisharat, 1 of Israel's most wanted, by detonating a remote controled bomb nr. his car in Tulkarm. The IDF fires tank shells at residential areas of Tal al-Sultan; bulldozes 15 dunams of Palestinian land nr. Kefar Darom settlement. Jewish settlers occupy 10s of dunams of Palestinian land nr. After an "intense internal debate," the Bush admin. decides not to send a high-level diplomatic mission to work with Israeli, PA officials to secure a more durable cease-fire, deciding instead to press Arafat to act more forcefully to suppress violence. Powell praises Israel for its restraint. When asked if he has urged Israel to avoid retaliation, Powell says, "I have not given that direct comment to the Israeli government." (NYT 6/4; WP 6/6)

Israeli-Palestinian clashes continue, leaving 5 Palestinian dead, including senior DFLP mbr. Firas Qasim Saba'na, who is assasinated by IDF troops in Jinin. A 6th Palestinian dies of injuries received earlier. In Gaza, clashes erupt when the IDF attempts to remove a roadblock outside Khan Yunis. When the IDF responds to stone throwers with heavy weapons, PA police and Palestinian gunmen fire back, killing 1 IDF soldier. The IDF also shells a Palestinian hotel in Bethlehem "to flush out gunmen." Palestinian gunmen fatally shoot a Jewish settler in the West Bank. The IDF bulldozes 18 dunams of Palestinian land nr. Kefar Darom settlement, 35 dunams nr. Netzarim settlement. For the 7th straight wk., Israel bars Palestinians under 45 fr. attending Friday prayers at al-Aqsa Mosque. The IDF says that since 11/22, it has arrested 119 West Bank Palestinians suspected of throwing stones, Molotov cocktails. Arafat and Barak agree to resume security coordination during a 3-way phone conversation arranged by Russian pres. Vladimir Putin. Arafat, who is in Moscow on a 1-day visit to meet with Putin, suggests Russia convene a Madrid-style international conference on the peace process, but Barak rejects the idea.
