In the West Bank, Israeli forces opened fire at 1 Palestinian vehicle at a checkpoint near Jenin, puncturing its tires; no injuries were reported. Israeli forces also delivered demolition notices for 8 Palestinian-owned homes in Duma. 11 Palestinians were arrested during raids in Abu Dis, Kaubar, Dheisheh refugee camp, Jenin, Hebron, and Nablus. In East Jerusalem, 4 Palestinians were arrested during raids in Issawiyya and al-Tur. In Gaza, 2 rockets fired from the strip landed in the Mediterranean Sea, after which Israeli aircraft fired 1 missile at al-Qarara and 3 missiles at al-Shuka, damaging agricultural lands; no injuries were reported. Egyptian president Abdel Fattah al-Sisi met with Jordanian King Abdullah II in Amman to discuss the Palestinian elections scheduled for May and July. According to Haaretz, the 2 countries have been asked by Palestinian leaders to help facilitate the parliamentary and presidential elections. PA prime minister Mohammed Shtayyeh also said that the PA has asked Israel to allow Palestinians in East Jerusalem to participate in the elections. (HA, TOI 1/18)

The WHO voiced concern about the unequal distribution of COVID-19 vaccines in Israel and the occupied Palestinian territories. The head of the WHO in the occupied Palestinian territories Dr. Gerald Rockenschaub said that the WHO has been in contact with Israel, trying to get the country to distribute vaccines to front-line workers in the occupied territories. Israel has boasted about its successful vaccination campaign, claiming the highest rate per capita, but has as of late come under international media scrutiny for not shouldering its responsibilities as an occupying power by distributing vaccines among its occupied population. In the West Bank, Israeli forces violently suppressed a protest in Kafr Qaddum, injuring 4 Palestinians with rubber-coated bullets; others suffered tear-gas related injuries. Israeli forces and Palestinians clashed during a raid in al-‘Arub refugee camp, leading to tear-gas related injuries. Israeli authorities closed al-Ibrahimi Mosque for Muslim worshippers during the Jewish New Year holiday. Israeli forces delivered notices to residents in Duma that Israel will seize 803 dunams (198 acres) of Palestinian-owned land. In East Jerusalem, 2 Palestinians were arrested during a late-night raid in Issawiyya; during the raid, clashes with Palestinians erupted, leading to tear-gas related injuries. In Gaza, Israeli forces opened fire on agricultural lands east of al-Fukhari; no injuries were reported. Off the coast of Gaza, Israeli naval forces opened fire on Palestinian fishermen west of Bayt Lahiya; no injuries were reported. In Israel, according to Israeli authorities, Israeli forces arrested 4 Palestinians who had crossed the Gaza fence into Israel, 1 of whom was carrying a knife. In the West Bank, Israeli forces delivered notices to Palestinians informing them that Israel would be seizing 624 dunams (148 acres) of land: 500 near Hizma and 124 in Duma. Israeli forces forced Palestinians harvesting olives to leave their land between Burin and Huwwara. Israeli settlers attacked a Palestinian family in Dura. In East Jerusalem, a school in Issawiyya declared a strike after Israeli forces broke into the school an arrest a 10th-grader in the school yard. Israeli forces also arrested 1 Palestinian during a protest in the Old City. In Gaza, Israel continued its bombing of targets which started on 11/1. Twitter suspended 4 verified accounts from the Palestinian news outlet Quds News Network (QNN). QNN said in a press release that they had not been informed why but suspected suppression of free speech on Palestine. (AJ 11/2; QNN 11/4)

In the West Bank, a Palestinian man was rushed to a hospital in Ramallah after being beaten by Israeli forces at a checkpoint outside of Ramallah. Israeli forces also arrested 19 Palestinians during late-night raids in and around Hebron, Bethlehem, Nablus, Qalqilya, Tulkarm, Salfit, and Ramallah. Israeli settlers slashed tires and sprayed racist graffiti on walls in Duma village. Israeli forces razed land and demolished 1 house and 2 greenhouses in al-Walaja. In East Jerusalem, Israeli forces arrested 1 Palestinian during a late-night raid in Issawiyya. In Gaza, Israeli forces made incursions to level land east of Khan Yunis. Israeli prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu said in an interview with the Israeli Army Radio that he “intends to extend [Israeli] sovereignty on all the settlements and the [settlement] blocs . . . sites that have security importance or are important to Israel’s heritage.” PA prime minister Mohammed Shtayyeh said in response that the “Jordan Valley is part of Palestinian lands and any settlement or annexation is illegal,” further stating that the PA will sue Israel in international courts. An Israeli settler on a motorcycle runs over and seriously injures an elderly Palestinian outside Duma village nr. Nablus; he dies later in the day. It is unclear if the collision is an accident or an intentional ramming attack. Elsewhere in the West Bank, IDF troops conduct raids in al-Am‘ari r.c. nr. Ramallah overnight, arresting 1 Palestinian and sparking clashes with stone-throwing residents; 4 Palestinians are injured. IDF troops arrest 4 more Palestinians during late-night raids and house searches in Jenin and around Bethlehem. Israeli forces uproot around 500 olive trees outside a village nr. Salfit. Overnight, unidentified suspects throw Molotov cocktails at a structure in an Israeli settlement nr. Nablus, causing damage. In East Jerusalem, Israeli police escort around 100 Jewish settlers and 13 Israeli archaeologists on a tour of Haram al-Sharif, and bar Palestinian maintenance workers from entering the sanctuary. They arrest 2 Palestinians during raids in Ras al-Amud, the Old City, and Silwan. In Gaza, 8 Palestinians are injured when a tunnel collapses in e. Gaza City. In Israel, dozens of Palestinian protesters gather outside the Barzilai Medical Center in Ashqelon in solidarity with hunger-striking prisoner Bilal Kayed. The Israeli police announce a NIS 1 b. (approx. $260 m.) plan to increase their presence in Palestinian areas of East Jerusalem by adding 1,200 officers and 5 new outposts in Ras al-Amud, Jabal Mukabir, Silwan, Issawiyya, and Sur al-Bahir. The outposts will be headquartered in buildings that already offer civic services, such as national insurance and post, reportedly to stop them from becoming sources of tension, as police outposts in East Jerusalem have been in the past. Israeli forces conduct raids in al-Ram village, sparking clashes with stone-throwing Palestinians; 1 Palestinian child is struck in the chest with an unidentified projectile and killed. Palestinian witnesses say he was killed by live ammunition. The Israeli authorities later dispute the nature of the child’s death, arguing that no live fire was used in the clashes. In East Jerusalem, Israeli forces demolish a Palestinian home under construction in Bayt Hanina and 4 commercial buildings and a residential structure in Silwan; arrest a West Bank Palestinian 2 days after his release from prison, alleging that he was planning a “terrorist” attack; arrest 3 other Palestinians during late-night raids in Issawiyya; and demolish several Palestinian graves nr. Haram al-Sharif for undisclosed reasons. In the West Bank, the IDF continues its closure of Hebron and the surrounding district that was put in place on 7/1. IDF troops arrest 9 Palestinians and issue 1 arrest summons during house searches and raids nr. Hebron, as well as nr. Ramallah and Bethlehem; and patrol nr. Jenin, Salfit, and Hebron throughout the day. Meanwhile, Israeli settlers set fire to a Palestinian home in Duma nr. Nablus, causing damage and 1 light injury. Along Gaza’s border, Israeli forces conduct a limited incursion to level land nr. al-Bureij r.c. Israel’s Knesset passes into law, 62–45, the so-called Suspension Bill, allowing 70 MKs, including 10 from the opposition, to initiate a procedure that would suspend 1 of their colleagues. On the Gaza border, IDF troops e. of the Gaza Valley arrest 3 Palestinian youths attempting to cross into Israel for work. In the West Bank, Israeli settlers throw firebombs and stones at a home in Duma, the same village where settlers set fire to a home on 7/31, killing an 18-mo.-old Palestinian child; there are no serious injuries. Later, IDF troops violently disperse Palestinian, Israeli, and international protesters marching in a village nr. Nablus, another nr. Qalqilya, and outside al-‘Arub r.c. nr. Hebron in solidarity with the victims of the 7/31 arson attack, after a 2d victim succumbs to his injuries; there are no serious injuries. In response to poor conditions, 28 Palestinian prisoners in Israel’s Ramon and Eshel Prisons join the mass open-ended hunger strike that began on 8/5, bringing the number of participants to 148. Meanwhile, the UN releases a statement expressing concern over the new Israeli law, adopted on 7/30, that allows for the force-feeding of Palestinian prisoners on hunger strike. Overnight in the West Bank, 4 Jewish extremists set fire to 2 Palestinian family homes in the village of Duma, nr. Nablus, killing an 18-mo.-old child and severely injuring the 3 other mbrs. of his family (the father and mother will succumb to their injuries on 8/8 and 9/7, respectively). The extremists leave price-tag graffiti nr. the site of the attack. IDF troops violently disperse Palestinian, Israeli, and international protesters at demonstrations against the Israeli occupation and the morning’s arson attack in 6 areas nr. Ramallah (Bil‘in, Ni‘lin, Nabi Salih, Jalazun r.c., Silwad, and outside Ofer Prison) and Kafr Qaddum nr. Qalqilya; 4 Palestinians are injured. IDF troops on the Gaza border e. of Bayt Lahiya open fire on a small group of Palestinians approaching the border fence to protest the morning’s arson attack nr. Jenin, killing 1 and moderately wounding another. In East Jerusalem, the Israeli authorities bar men under 50 from entering Haram al-Sharif in the wake of the morning arson attack. Clashes break out across the city, with Israeli forces firing rubber-coated metal bullets at Palestinian protesters in Shu‘fat r.c., Issawiyya, Bayt Hanina, al-Suwana, al-Tur, and Silwan; 2 Israeli police officers and 13 Palestinians are injured, including 1 seriously.
