Israel criticizes Egypt, Saudi Arabia, saying their support will allow Syria to harden stance, making negotiations more difficult. Secy of State Christopher meets PLO Chmn. Arafat, Egyptian Pres. Hizballah ambushes IDF patrol in southern Lebanon, killing 2 Israeli soldiers and wounding 3.  Hizballah fires 12 katyusha rockets into "security zone," northern Israel following ambush, wounding 3 Israeli civilians, and attacks IDF/SLA posts.  (NYT, WP, WT 8/7)

Israeli PM Rabin, FM Peres, and PLO Chmn. Arafat awarded UNESCO Félix Houphouët-Boigny Peace Award at Paris ceremony.  Prize presented by frmr. Rawhi al-Khatib, Jordanian Mayor of Jerusalem 1957-67, dies at 82.  Khatib was expelled by Israel in 1968 after being deposed and refusing to work with Israeli Jerusalem municipality.  (TJT 7/8; NYT 7/9; WP 7/10)
