Other Countries: State Dept. and Bush transition team announce that political statement from 19th PNC, which implicitly recognizes Israel, does not meet U.S. requirements for PLO-U.S. talks [NYT 11/ 17]. British P.M. Margaret Thatcher urges Pres. Reagan and Pres. -elect Bush to take a constructive approach to new PLO positions [WP 11/17].

Occupied Palestine/Israel: 25-year-old Palestinian from Rafah dies from wounds received during earlier demonstrations. Soldiers wound 2 Gazans with live ammunition. In Ramallah troops arrest 2 Palestinians during demonstrations. In 'Azzun soldiers arrest 15 Palestinians, demolish 3 houses [FJ 11/21].

Occupied Palestine/Israel: Israeli-imposed curfews continue in Balatah, Qalandiya, al-Am'ari, and Tulkarm camps and Qalqiliyyah, 'Azzun, and Dannabah [FJ 9/25].

Military Action

Occupied Palestine/Israel: In Gaza 8 Palestinians are injured during clashes. Near Tulkarm one Palestinian is shot; in Bayt Furik one Palestinian is injured; in Hebron one Palestinian is injured [FJ 9/25].

Arab World: Israeli warplanes attack PLO targets near Sidon wounding 5, the 14th such raid this year; 65 people have been killed, 108 injured [LAT 8/24]

Military Action

Occupied Palestine/Israel: In Nablus at least 24 Palestinians are injured during demonstrations. In Burqa village three Palestinians are injured during clashes. In Jiftlik 12 Arab houses are demolished. In Tulkarm at least 80 Palestinians are arrested after curfew is imposed. In Khan Yunis Palestinians protest visit by Israeli DM Yitzhaq Rabin; 2 Palestinians are shot. Fierce demonstrations are reported at Beach camp [FJ 9/25].

Occupied Palestine/Israel: Gaza observes strike call from Islamic Resistance Movement; call is largely ignored in W. Bank [WP 9/10]. The army enforces curfews in Tulkarm, Beach, al-Burayj, Nusayrat, and Balatah camps and the villages of 'Azzun, Bani Na'im, Dannabah, Husan [FJ 9/11].

Other Countries: Israeli soldiers arrest 200 Palestinians in Gaza as authorities attempt to break up the Palestinian underground network [WP 9/10].

Occupied Palestine/Israel: In Gaza Strip 650,000 Palestinians are confined to their homes for the 2nd straight day [WP 8/171. Qalqiliyyah, Qabatiyyah, 'Azzun, Tulkarm, and Dannabah are also placed under curfew [FJ 8/21].

Arab World: In Egypt PLO leaders meet with Pres. Husni Mubarak and agree to draft aprogram for a government-in-exile [WP 8/17].

Occupied Palestine/Israel: Troops open fire on hundreds of rioting Palestinians at Ketziot (Ansar III) Prison in the Negev; 2 Palestinians die, 1 is wounded [WP 8/17, FJ 8/21]. Another Palestinian prisoner is found hanged in his cell at police headquarters in Jerusalem [FJ 8/21]. At Beach camp, 65-year-old Palestinian dies after being exposed to tear gas [FJ 8/21]. According to officials at al-Shifa Hospital 60 people from Gaza City are treated for beatings [FJ 8/21].

Occupied Palestine/Israel: Military issues order preventing Palestinians from occupied territories from traveling to Israel and E. Jerusalem [FJ 4/24].

Arab World: Khalil al-Wazir is buried in Damascus' Yarmuk camp [WP 4/21].

Military Action

Occupied Palestine/Israel: Curfews are imposed on 15 W. Bank camps as well as Nablus and village of 'Azzun. In Gaza Strip, parts of Rafah, Abasan village, and Jabalya, Beach, Nusayrat, and Khan Yunis camps are under curfew. Gaza Strip is closed off. Demonstrators in Nusayrat camp defy curfew; troops respond with live ammunition, killing 1. In W. Bank town of 'Anabta, curfew is reimposed following violent demonstration. Israeli sources report soldier is injured by rock during Ramallah demonstration [FJ 4/24].

Occupied Palestine/Israel: Israeli court convicts John Demjanjuk of crimes against the Jewish people, crimes against humanity, war crimes, and crimes against a persecuted people [WP 4/19]. General strike continues in occupied territories [FJ 4/24]. Israeli officials confiscate al-Fajr, al-Quds, and al-Sha'b. Al-Fajr is banned from distribution in W. Bank and Gaza Strip for 2 weeks [FJ 4/24].

Arab World: PLO announces Khalil al-Wazir will be buried in Syria. Tunisian govemment officially blames Israel for assassination of Wazir [WP 4/19].

Other Countries: U.S. condemns murder of PLO military leader Khalil al-Wazir as "act of political assassination" [NYT 4/19].

Occupied Palestine/Israel: Entire W. Bank, except Jericho, is declared closed military zone [FJ 4/24]. Palestinian is killed when soldiers open fire on demonstration in Rafah. Palestinian from Gaza's Zaytun quarter is shot dead in separate incident. In Jenin, protester is shot in head, seriously wounded. Curfews continue in 16 camps, Nablus, and 'Anabta. Village of 'Azzun is ordered under curfew [FJ 4/24].

Occupied Palestine/Israel: Court sentences to 2 and a half months imprisonment 2 Israeli soldiers who plead guilty to shameful conduct for their part in burying 4 Palestinians alive [WP 3/18; NYT 3/19]. Charges were reduced from aggravated assault [FJ 3/20]. Trial opens in Jaffa of 2 soldiers and their superior officer in connection with 2/24 beating of 2 Palestinians that was filmed by CBS camera crew. Soldiers plead not guilty to assault charges; 2 others have already been convicted in connection with incident [WP, NYT 3/18]. Israeli is shot, wounded in legs near Gaza Strip's Jabalya camp. Curfew is imposed after attack [NYT 3/18]. In Ramallah, Israeli officials destroy olive grove along road where Jewish settlers' bus was bumed in firebomb attack [NYT 3/18; FJ 3/20]. Israeli authorities close shops and markets in Jericho; shops remain closed in Nablus, Jenin, and Tulkarm [FJ 3/20].

Other Countries: P.M. Shamir meets with Sec. of State Shultz and members of House of Representatives before leaving Washington for Los Angeles [WP 3/18].

Military Action

Occupied Palestine/Israel: In effort to break strike in occupied territories, soldiers order shops closed until noon and opened in afternoon [WP, NYT 3/18]. In Am'ari camp, demonstration erupts during funeral of Palestinian who died 3/16 from tear gas; 6 are injured in subsequent clash with Israeli troops. Qalqiliyyah, 'Azzun, and Jalazun camps are under curfew [FJ 3/20].

Arab World: IDF fighter planes raid DFLP base near Beirut; Palestinian fighter is killed [WP 3/18].

Occupied Palestine/Israel: General strike continues in occupied territories. Def. Min. Rabin threatens to introduce additional sanctions in W. Bank and Gaza Strip. Israeli authorities close Hebron National Bus Co. for 1 week for honoring strike. Palestinian American political activist Mubarak 'Awad is arrested in Jerusalem on charges of organizing an illegal demonstration [WP 3/17]. Israel cuts phone lines to W. Bank, Gaza Strip [NYT 3/17]. Jews from Teqoa settlement attack Bethlehem-area village of Za'tara after demonstration; settlers bulldoze walls, damage water pipes, and smash windows of houses and cars before troops intervene [FJ 3/20].

Other Countries: Pres. Reagan stresses that U.S. will not change or abandon peace proposals in talks with Israeli p.m. Shamir [CSM, WP 3/17]. Shamir suggests ceremonial opening for Arab-Israeli peace talks at U.S. -Soviet summit in Moscow [LAT 3/17].

Military Action

Occupied Palestine/Israel: Demonstrators in Tulkarm bum tires, block roads, and throw rocks at soldiers; troops respond with tear gas, rubber bullets, and live ammunition, killing 3 and wounding at least 12. Palestinian is shot dead in West Bank village of Ya'bad [WP 3/171. Violent clashes are also reported in Gaza Strip's Khan Yunis and Nusayrat camps, Bethlehem's Duhayshah camp, Jalazun camp, and Jib village, near Ramallah [NYT 3/17]. Military curfews are in force in Qalqiliyyah, Jalazun camp, Tulkarm, Tulkarm camp, 'Azzun, and Nur Shams camp; Qabatiyyah and Yamun are sealed off [FJ 3/20].

Occupied Palestine/Israel: Israel bans travel by Palestinian residents between W. Bank and Gaza Strip and bars fuel shipments to Arab-owned stations for 3d day. Palestinians begin 2-day general strike, shutting down almost all of W. Bank, most of Gaza Strip. Israel cuts W. Bank's and Gaza Strip's international phone connections. IDF closes produce markets in Jenin and Jericho. Reports indicate Israel has cut electricity and telephone lines in Qabatiyyah and forbidden residents to travel to Jordan. IDF announces sentencing of 2 soldiers involved in beating of Palestinians that was filmed by U.S. network; 1 is sentenced to 21 days imprisonment, the other to 10 days. Army also announces that U. S. photographer has been charged with participating in rock-throwing demonstration [WP 3/16].

Other Countries: Sec. of State Shultz and P.M. Shamir fail to reach agreement on Middle East peace plan during meetings in Washington [NYT 3/16].

Military Action Occupied Palestine/Israel: Plestinian is shot dead during clash with soldiers in Ramallah-area village of Dayr Jarir [WP, NYT 3/16]. Another Palestinian is reported killed by army gunfire in Anza village, near Jenin [FJ 3/20]. At least 4 Palestinians are wounded by troops trying to disperse demonstrations in Qalqiliyyah [WP 3/16]. In Jaba village near Nablus, Palestinian is shot dead by soldiers [NYT 3/16]. Soldiers shoot, wound 5 villagers in 'Azzun. Daylong demonstrations are reported in Nablus and surrounding villages and camps. In Qalqiliyyah, Palestinian protesters block roads, bum tires, and stone military vehicles; soldiers close off city, impose curfew. At least 9 are wounded by army gunfire [FJ 3/20].
