In the West Bank, Israeli forces demolish a Palestinian carwash north of Hebron. An IDF driver runs over a Palestinian as he attempts to cross a road near Hebron, causing major injuries. It’s unclear if the crash was an accident or a ramming attack. IDF troops patrol in and around Nablus, Hebron, and Tulkarm. Off Gaza’s coast, Israeli naval forces open fire on Palestinian fishing boats near Jabaliya refugee camp and Bayt Lahiya, causing no damage or injury. Israel’s High Court of Justice rules to allow Ateret Cohanim, a settler organization, to continue its legal campaign that would evict 700 Palestinians from their homes in Silwan. Israeli aircraft then conduct air strikes on 8 Hamas sites across Gaza late at night, causing extensive damage (there are no reported injuries). Earlier in the day, Israeli forces strike a Hamas outpost in southern Gaza allegedly used as a staging area for incendiary kite and balloon attacks on Israel. On the other side of the border fence, Israeli firefighters put out 7 fires that were reportedly sparked by such attacks. Meanwhile, IDF troops violently disperse hundreds of Palestinians gathering along Gaza’s border fence near Rafah to continue the Great March of Return; 8 Palestinians are injured. In the West Bank, IDF troops arrest 6 Palestinians during late-night raids in and around Nablus and Hebron; and patrol near Nablus and Hebron. In East Jerusalem, Israeli forces arrest a Palestinian suspected of planning to carry out an attack on Israelis after a car chase through the city. They also forcibly remove several Coptic priests from an entrance to the Church of the Holy Sepulchre in the Old City. The priests were holding a sit-in protest against some recent Israel-led restoration work on a contested part of the church. Several of the priests suffer minor injuries. Meanwhile, the Israeli authorities evict a Palestinian family from a 4-story building in Silwan. The family were the last Palestinian tenants of the building remaining after settler group Ateret Cohanim seized control of much of the building in 2015. Egyptian authorities allow the body of a Palestinian who recently died in an Egyptian hospital to be returned home through the Rafah border crossing. In the West Bank, IDF troops patrol in a village nr. Ramallah, sparking minor clashes with stone-throwing Palestinian youths and arresting 1 Palestinian. They also conduct house searches and raids nr. Qalqilya, issuing 1 Palestinian an arrest summons. Israeli forces demolish 4 buildings in Israeli settlement outposts nr. Nablus and arrest 3 settlers protesting the demolitions. In Israel, dozens of Palestinians gather nr. the bedouin village Umm al-Hiran in the Negev to protest the preconstruction phases of 2 Israeli Jewish towns, which Israeli forces began on 8/23. Late in the evening, the IDF responds with air strikes on a smuggling tunnel on the Rafah border and on the destroyed Dahaniyya airport site in s. Gaza (causing no injuries), as well as on a Hamas building in Bayt Hanun (destroying it, damaging 26 houses, 23 shops, a clinic, the local municipal building, and a sports club nearby, injuring 15 Palestinian bystanders, and knocking out electricity to some areas). Unidentified Palestinians detonate a bomb hidden in a donkey cart by the Gaza border fence as an IDF border patrol unit on the Israeli side of the border passes, killing the donkey but causing no IDF injuries. IDF troops on the n. Gaza border fire warning shots at Palestinians scavenging construction materials fr. former settlement sites nr. the border twice during the day, causing no injuries; also fire warning shots at farmers who stray nr. the border fence nr. In the West Bank, the IDF conducts late-night arrest raids, house searches in Tubas and nr. Hebron, Nablus. Israel’s Jerusalem District Court upholds a decision to evacuate and seal the Beit Yonatan building in the Palestinian neighborhood of Silwan in East Jerusalem, built without a permit in 2004 by the right-wing group Ateret Cohanim and housing 8 settler families. The IDF retaliates by assassinating the senior Nablus AMB military cmdrs. Nadir Abu Layl and Hashim Abu Hamdan, firing a missile at their car as they drive through Nablus, also killing 2 AMB mbrs. traveling with them, injuring 3 bystanders. The IDF then rockets a building in Gaza City that houses a Hamas radio station (possibly attempting to assassinate a senior Hamas mbr. who reportedly was being interviewed at the time), the offices of al-Ayyam and al-Quds newspapers, a Fatah radio station; no one is injured. The IDF also raids Wadi al-Silqa nr. the site of the ambush, orders all Palestinian residents to leave their homes, searches homes, arrests 1 Palestinian, bulldozes 15 Palestinian homes. The IDF also bulldozes 4 Palestinian homes and 6 dunams of land nr. Morag settlement, 2 Palestinian homes in Rafah; fires on a funeral procession in Khan Yunis, wounding 2 Palestinians; fires on residential areas of Tubas, sparking protests, then opening fire on stone-throwing youths; conducts arrest raids in and around Jenin. Late in the evening, 4 Jewish settler families, escorted by IDF soldiers and 100s of mbrs. of the radical Ateret Cohanim settler group, expel 2 Palestinians families fr. their homes in Abu Dis, occupy the buildings, surround them with a fence, claming they stand on part of an 80-dunam plot they purchased in 1927.
