The IDF blows up 1 Palestinian home in Tulkarm, 1 in Amari r.c.; partially demolishes a small mosque, bulldozes 3 grave sites nr. Netzarim settlement; fires at stone-throwing Palestinians in Jenin, Kafr ‘Ayn, Qarawat Bani Zaid, injuring a total of 7 (including 1 who is arrested, severely beaten, dumped outside a nearby village); conducts arrest raids targeting Hamas in Hebron. A Jerusalem court sentences an East Jerusalem Palestinian to 19 yrs. in prison for organizing a “terror cell” comprising mbrs. of the Bethlehem PSF; the alleged cell never staged any attacks. A Nazareth magistrate court tosses out the 2001 indictment against Israeli Arab MK Azmi Bishara for organizing trips for Israeli Arabs to visit family in Syria, ruling the visits were of a humanitarian nature, did not amount to treason for contact with a hostile government, and took place before Bishara was stripped of parliamentary immunity in 11/01, but says it will pursue charges against his aides. Israeli-Palestinian clashes continue. A Palestinian suicide bomber detonates a car bomb nr. a Jewish settler school bus in the West Bank, killing himself but causing no other injuries. Palestinians also fire 2 mortars at a Kefar Darom settlement in Gaza. Inside the Green Line, Israeli police find, safely detonate a bomb in Netanya. The IDF shells a PSF office in Gaza, residential areas of Khan Yunis; bulldozes Palestinian land in Khan Yunis; conducts an arrest sweep in Jalazun. Jewish settlers set fire to a Palestinian olive grove in Salfit, destroying 50 trees. (WP 4/30; LAW 5/4)

Arafat orders the popular resistance comms. to disband and their mbrs. (most of whom are Fatah mbrs., some of whom are PSF officers) to "return to their original security positions," calls senior PSF officer Yasir Zanun (a Fatah mbr. and a leader of the resistance comms.) in for questioning, has the PSF arrest Hamas spokesman `Abd al-`Aziz Rantisi for statements accusing Arafat of treason for resuming security talks with Israel. Israeli FM Peres presents Israel's response to the Jordanian-Egyptian proposal to Mubarak in Cairo, Jordanian FM Khatib in Amman. Egypt, Jordan say they will study Israel's reservations and proposed changes, but they are not willing start a new process of "talks about talks." Israeli-Palestinian clashes continue, killing at least 1 Palestinian. A 2d Palestinian dies of injuries received earlier. In Hebron, IDF troops push, kick, detain Palestinians accompanying UN special envoy Terje Larsen on a tour of the Palestinian section of the city. Larsen says he will report the incident to UN Secy.-Gen. Kofi Annan. The IDF continues to bulldoze lands, structures nr. Netzarim Junction, Dugit settlement. (LAW, WT 12/8; PCHR 12/18)

The PA State Security Court sentences to death Alam Bani Odeh, nephew of assassinated Hamas official Ibrahim Bani Odeh, for treason and espionage. Alam, who was arrested on 11/28, reportedly confessed to having been recruited by Shin Bet 9 mos. ago to monitor his uncle. (LAW 12/11) (see 11/23)
