Arab League passes resolution supporting indefinite NPT renewal but saying 22 mbr.-states are free to vote how they will; does not link renewal with Israel's joining NPT. Jerusalem Mayor Ehud Olmert says PA has violated Israeli authority over the city by taking control of all 20 Waqf schools (previously run by Jordan). PA funding for schools is part of $27 m. raised by Arafat advisor Husseini fr. Saudi Arabia. Remaining money is slated for Jerusalem housing (see 3/13). To date, 93 senators have signed on to Sen. Alfonse D'Amato and Sen. D. Patrick Moynihan's letter, calling on the pres. to move the U.S. embassy in Israel fr. Tel Aviv to Jerusalem. (WJW 3/23) (see 2/3)

Occupied Palestine/Israel: The Washington Post reports that Faysal al-Husayni, arrested and placed under administrative dtention last week by Israeli authorities, has been linked to effort to issue Palestinian declaration of independence [WP 8/7]. Asst. Sec. of State Richard Murphy warns top Israeli leaders that situation in the Middle East is becoming more unstable. [LAT 8/8]. In Ramallah a strike continues in protest of killing of Palestinian youth [FJ 8/14].

Arab World: King Hussein announces he no longer supports U. S. peace plan in which Palestinians would be represented through a joint delegation with Jordan [LAT 8/8].

Military

Occupied Palestine/Israel: Several Palestinians are injured in clash with Israeli troops in Kafr 'Ayn. In Bani Na'im after firebomb is tossed at military vehicle troops round up all males in village between 14 and 60; many are beaten, 20 are arrested. In Duhayshah 1 person is injured during clashes with soldiers. In Qalqiliyyah two people are injured by rubber bullets. Shuwaykah was placed under curfew [FJ 8/14].
