The Palestine Chronology

In the West Bank, Israeli forces shot and injured 2 Palestinians using live ammunition during a raid in Dheisheh refugee camp. 11 Palestinians were arrested during late-night raids in Ramallah, Bayt Rima, Beit Ula, Fawwar refugee camp, Idhna, Jenin, Jericho, and Fari‘ah refugee camp. In East Jerusalem, 4 Palestinians were arrested during raids in Silwan and Shu‘fat refugee camp. The Israeli justice ministry began the process of registering land adjacent to the Haram al-Sharif compound, including at the Ophel Archeological Park in the Old City. (HA 6/26; MEE 6/27; MEMO 6/29)

Israeli military authorities extended the administrative detention period of 1 Palestinian prisoner by 4 months despite promising to release him at the end of his current detention period after he had been hunger striking for 111 days. The man is currently hospitalized for complications related to his hunger strike, which he ended on 6/21. The man resumed his hunger strike on 7/2 (WAFA 6/23; WAFA 7/5)

Hamas political bureau chief Ismail Haniyeh met with Hezbollah secretary general Hassan Nasrallah in Beirut. There were also reports that Haniyeh was scheduled to meet with Lebanese president Michel Aoun and prime minister Najib Mikati. (HA 6/23)

The PLO executive committee met in Ramallah. During the meeting, the committee discussed the U.S. Biden administration’s failure to fulfil its promises to the Palestinian people and plans to initiate national dialogue to end the intra-Palestinian political division. (WAFA 6/24)

Peace Now released a report marking the first year of the Bennett-Lapid government, detailing how the current Israeli government has accelerated the displacement of Palestinians compared to average numbers during the Netanyahu governments. Compared with the yearly average of the Netanyahu governments, the Bennett-Lapid government has promoted 26% more settlement units, issued tenders for 15% more settlement construction, demolished 35% more Palestinian homes in the West Bank, and 59% more Palestinian homes in East Jerusalem. Additionally, settler violence has risen with 45% and 45 more Palestinians have been killed by Israeli forces compared with the yearly average of the Netanyahu governments. (PCN 6/23)

Israel’s foreign minister Yair Lapid met with his Türkiye counterpart Mevlüt Çavuşoğlu in Ankara, in a bid to further normalized relations between the 2 countries. (AJ, ALM, HA, MEE, REU 6/23)

24 Democratic senators, led by Chris Van Hollen (D-MD), wrote a letter to the Biden administration, calling on it to “ensure that a comprehensive, impartial, and open investigation” into the killing of Al Jazeera journalist Shireen Abu Akleh is conducted. President of Suriname Chandrikapersad Santokhi told the National Assembly that Suriname would not build an embassy to Israel in Jerusalem, citing budget constraints. Suriname announced plans to open an embassy to Israel in Jerusalem during a visit by its foreign minister Albert Ramdin on 5/30. (AJ, HA 6/24)

UNRWA announced that it had received pledges of $160 million for its general programming, but warned that it still expects a shortfall of $100 million in its core budget for 2022. (WAFA 6/24)

In the West Bank, Israeli settlers attempted to enter Nabi Salih but were repelled by Palestinians. Israeli forces raided Shufa, seizing Palestinian flags from poles and houses. Israeli forces also seized 1 t-shirt from a 3-year-old at a checkpoint near Tura, saying that the t-shirt depicted a rifle. 10 Palestinians were arrested during late-night raids in Hebron, Husan, Nablus, and al-Am‘ari refugee camp. In East Jerusalem, Israeli settlers toured the Haram al-Sharif compound, closing it off to Muslim worshippers. In Gaza, Israeli forces opened fire at Palestinian farmers and shepherds east of Rafah, al-Qarara, and Maghazi; no injuries were reported. Lebanese president Michel Aoun and prime minister Najib Mikati condemned Israel for placing an Israeli gas-drilling rig in a maritime zone that both countries claim is theirs. Prime Minister Mikati said “the Israeli enemy’s attempts to create a new crisis, by encroaching on Lebanon’s maritime wealth, and imposing a fait accompli in a disputed area in which Lebanon adheres to its rights, is extremely dangerous.” Israel claimed that the gas-drilling rig was placed outside of the disputed area. President Aoun and Prime Minister Mikati later, on 6/6, called on U.S. envoy Amos Hochstein to complete negotiations in Beirut on demarcating the 2 countries’ maritime borders to “prevent an escalation.” A Haaretz investigation using satellite images later suggested that the gas-drilling rig was not in the maritime area that both Israel and Lebanon claim. In the West Bank, 1 Palestinian woman was shot dead by Israeli forces in her house during a late-night raid in Jenin. According to her friend, she was shot while closing a window to prevent tear gas from entering the home. Elsewhere, Israeli forces violently dispersed the weekly protest in Kafr Qaddum using rubber-coated bullets and tear gas; 1 Palestinian was injured by a rubber-coated bullet, others suffered tear-gas related injuries. Israeli forces also violently dispersed a protest in Turmus ‘Ayya; 5 were injured by rubber-coated bullets, 1 by a tear gas canister to his head, and others suffered tear-gas related injuries. Israeli forces ordered a halt to the construction of 2 buildings near Bethlehem. Israeli settlers blocked 1 road south of Nablus, causing traffic jams. 4 Palestinians were arrested during late-night raids in and around Bethlehem, Tulkarm, and Jenin. In East Jerusalem, 1 Palestinian 4-year-old girl was killed by what appears to be a stray bullet in Silwan; it is unclear who fired the bullet. In Gaza, Israeli forces opened fire on agricultural lands east of Khan Yunis and al-Bureij; no injuries were reported. Israel said it had shot down a drone flying over the Israeli-occupied Golan Heights. (REU, TOI 8/7)

The president of Lebanon Michel Aoun said that the country had not ruled out “external interference” in the explosion in Beirut that killed at least 154 on 8/4. The possibility of external interference will be part of Lebanon’s probe into the incident. (AJ, HA, REU 8/7)

In the West Bank, 1 Palestinian was injured by Israeli forces ramming him with a vehicle during a raid in Tubas. Another Palestinian was injured by Israeli forces shooting him in the head near Nablus; Israeli authorities later said it was a mistake and that the Israeli forces thought the man to be someone else. Israeli forces uprooted and seized some 100 palm trees in Jiftlik. Israeli forces also razed land in Dura. 19 Palestinians were arrested during late-night raids in and around Nablus, Tubas, Ramallah, Jalazun refugee camp, Bethlehem, and Hebron. In East Jerusalem, Israeli forces demolished 3 Palestinian-owned homes and 1 store in Silwan. In Lebanon, the Lebanese government declared a 2-week state of emergency in Beirut in the wake of the deadly blast on 8/4, which killed more than 135 people and wounded more than 5,000. The president of Lebanon Michel Aoun said the government would initiate a transparent investigation into what could have happened. PA president Mahmoud Abbas called President Aoun to express his condolences and to offer assistance. (AJ, REU, WAFA 8/5)

Heavy fighting breaks out east of Beirut between Syrian and Phalangist forces following election of Bashir Gemayel as President of Lebanon (artillery and machine gun fire around Kubbeih, Krayeh,. 3 IDF soldiers buried yesterday; freighter "Lotus" with relief supplies and Egyptian opposition parliament members aboard allowed to land by IDF; first Israeli planes land at Beirut airport; private Israeli airline begins flights to southern Lebanon; IDF begin releasing some of estimated 7,400 Palestinian prisoners held at al-Ansar detention camp.
