Occupied Palestine/Israel: The West Bank Data Base Project releases 2 reports: One charges there is a double standard in the justice system of the occupied territories; the other argues the population of the occupied territoriess 1.7 million instead of the official Israeli figure of 1.4 million and that Palestinians in the occupied territories are worse off in terms of economic and social development than they were at the beginning of the occupation [WP, CSM 10/19]. Israel's Supreme Court rules that Kach cannot compete in upcoming Israeli elections, that the Progressive List for Peace can run. Kach leader Meir Kahane calls for Kach supporters to boycott the upcoming election [WP, NYT 10/19]. Report in Christian Science Monitor says that Palestinians living in the occupied territories and earning the equivalent of $16,000 per year are taxed at 55 percent, while Israeli settlers earning about $30,000 per year are taxed at 48 percent [CSM 10/ 19]. Police order Dar al-Tifl school in East Jerusalem closed for 10 days [FJ 10/23].

Military Action

Occupied Palestine/Israel: During clashes in Nablus Israeli troops shoot, kill 2 Palestinian boys, wound 5 others including American press correspondent [WP 10/19, FJ 10/ 23]. Demonstrations occur throughout the occupied territories: in Gaza City 18-yearold Palestinian is shot, wounded; in Nusayrat 14-year-old Palestinian is shot, wounded; in Jerusalem 16-year-old Palestinian is shot, wounded [FJ 10/23].

Occupied Palestine/Israel: General strike continues in occupied territories. Def. Min. Rabin threatens to introduce additional sanctions in W. Bank and Gaza Strip. Israeli authorities close Hebron National Bus Co. for 1 week for honoring strike. Palestinian American political activist Mubarak 'Awad is arrested in Jerusalem on charges of organizing an illegal demonstration [WP 3/17]. Israel cuts phone lines to W. Bank, Gaza Strip [NYT 3/17]. Jews from Teqoa settlement attack Bethlehem-area village of Za'tara after demonstration; settlers bulldoze walls, damage water pipes, and smash windows of houses and cars before troops intervene [FJ 3/20].

Other Countries: Pres. Reagan stresses that U.S. will not change or abandon peace proposals in talks with Israeli p.m. Shamir [CSM, WP 3/17]. Shamir suggests ceremonial opening for Arab-Israeli peace talks at U.S. -Soviet summit in Moscow [LAT 3/17].

Military Action

Occupied Palestine/Israel: Demonstrators in Tulkarm bum tires, block roads, and throw rocks at soldiers; troops respond with tear gas, rubber bullets, and live ammunition, killing 3 and wounding at least 12. Palestinian is shot dead in West Bank village of Ya'bad [WP 3/171. Violent clashes are also reported in Gaza Strip's Khan Yunis and Nusayrat camps, Bethlehem's Duhayshah camp, Jalazun camp, and Jib village, near Ramallah [NYT 3/17]. Military curfews are in force in Qalqiliyyah, Jalazun camp, Tulkarm, Tulkarm camp, 'Azzun, and Nur Shams camp; Qabatiyyah and Yamun are sealed off [FJ 3/20].

Occupied Palestine/Israel: Palestinians order 3-day general strike in W. Bank and Gaza Strip [CSM 1/12]. In E. Jerusalem, police use tear gas and clubs to break up women's demonstration; 9 are arrested. Police arrest 19 following demonstration in Sa'diyyah quarter of Jerusalem's Old City [FJ 1/17]. Palestinian shot 12/16 in Rafah dies in Israeli hospital [LAT 1/11; FJ 1/17]. Def. Min. Rabin tells Israeli cabinet that calm will not be restored soon. Cabinet endorses iron fist policy. West Bank commander, General Amram Mitzna, orders Birzeit U. closed for 1 month [LAT, CSM 1/11]. W. Bank students sit for tawjihi exam [FJ 1/17]. Israeli youth is sentenced to 28 days in prison for refusing to serve in occupied territories [FJ 1/17]. Gaza lawyers decide to continue strike for another week. Reports indicate prisoners at Gaza Central prison have declared hunger strike as sign of support for uprising. School closings in Gaza Strip are extended indefinitely by Israeli authorities [FJ 1/17].

Military Action

Occupied Palestine/Israel: IDF reinforces its presence in W. Bank and Gaza Strip. Soldiers open fire on stone throwers in numerous clashes in Gaza Strip, killing 1 in Gaza City's Sha'jiyyah quarter. Military conducts house-to-house raids in Sha'jiyyah, imposes curfew. UN officials report at least 2 others wounded in Gaza City. Khan Yunis residents claim pregnant woman was suffocated by tear gas [WP 1/11]. UN sources report at least 30 wounded in Gaza [LAT 1/1 1]. Demonstrations break out in Ramallah, al-Birah, and surrounding villages and camps. Balatah and 'Askar camps are placed under curfew following demonstrations [FJ 1/17].
