In the West Bank, Israeli settlers shot and killed a Palestinian in Huwwara as Israeli settlers with a military escort, including MK Zvi Sukkot, raided the town at night. 51 Palestinians were injured, including 42 by tear gas, and settlers vandalized Palestinian property. The PA condemned the raid, saying Israel and the U.S. were responsible. Israeli national security minister Itamar Ben-Gvir said of the raid on X, “Our lives take priority to the Palestinians’ freedom of movement (and commerce).” Israeli settlers, including MK Limor Son-Harmelech, raided Jabel ‘Aybal in Area B near Nablus for the fifth day in a row. Settlers first toured the site on 10/2 with a military escort but since then have toured it without military involvement. Son-Harmelech called on the Israeli government to create a settlement at the site. Elsewhere, Israeli settlers vandalized 40 olive trees and stole the olive harvest in Yasuf. Israeli settlers also fired live ammunition at Palestinian motorists near Turmus ‘Ayya and threw stones at Palestinians at the DCO checkpoint near al-Bireh, causing damage. Israeli forces violently dispersed the funeral procession for the Palestinian who was killed in Huwwara in the early hours of the day, injuring 1 person with live ammunition, 1 with a baton round, and others with tear gas. Israeli forces also violently dispersed Palestinian protesters in Kafr Qaddum, injuring a journalist with a baton round and others with tear gas. Elsewhere, Israeli forces violently dispersed Palestinian protesters in Bayt Dajan, causing tear-gas related injuries. In the West Bank, Israeli settler set up a mobile home on Palestinian land east of Hebron. Israeli forces violently dispersed an anti-settlement protest in al-Mughayyir, leading to tear-gas related injuries. Israeli forces also violently dispersed anti-settlement protests in Kafr Qaddum, leading to tear-gas related injuries. Elsewhere, Israeli forces violently dispersed Palestinians at an olive tree planting event in Bayt Dajan, injuring 2 with rubber-coated bullets while 15 others suffered tear-gas related injuries. Israeli forces also denied Palestinians access to their land near Salfit. Palestinians clashed with PA security forces during several demonstrations against COVID-19 lockdown restrictions in and around Hebron, leading to tear-gas related injuries. 6 Palestinians were arrested during raids in and around Nablus, al-Bireh, al-‘Izzariya, Luban al-Sharqiyya, and Huwwara. In East Jerusalem, 4 Palestinians were arrested during late-night raids in the Old City and Issawiyya. 1 Palestinian man died of wounds sustained after being shot by Israeli forces at the Qalandia checkpoint on 8/16. The man, who had a hearing disability, was shot after he did not stop when told by Israeli forces. (WAFA 12/11; PCHR 12/17)

A member of Hezbollah was sentenced to 5 consecutive life sentences for killing former Lebanese prime minister Rafik Hariri and 21 others in 2005. The man, Salim Jamil Ayyash, was sentenced in absentia by the UN-backed Lebanon Tribunal. (AJ, HA, REU 12/11)

A group of 22 Republican members of the U.S. House sent a letter to U.S. president Donald Trump urging the president to declassify a State Department report mandated by Congress in 2012 that distinguishes between Palestinian refugees born in Palestine before 1948 and those born outside of Palestine. The 22 Republicans said in the letter that they do not believe that descendants of Palestinian refugees born in Palestine before 1948 can be considered refugees and called the Right of Return a “fiction” that should “end.” (Rep. In the West Bank, after a rise in COVID-19 cases in the Nablus district, the governor or Nablus ordered a number of businesses and buildings to close, including mosques and churches. 10 Palestinians were injured by Israeli forces during the weekly anti-settlement protest in Kafr Qaddum, including 2 by live ammunition and 8 by rubber-coated bullets. Israeli forces also violently dispersed protesters in al-Bireh, leading to tear-gas related injuries. Israeli settlers attacked 1 Palestinian minor outside al-Khadir; the minor was treated at a hospital for his injuries. 7 Palestinians were arrested during late-night raids in and around Tulkarm, Jenin, and Qabatiya. 3 top democrats in the U.S. Senate, Ben Cardin (D-MD), Bob Menendez (D-NJ), and Chuck Schumer (D-NY), released a joint statement against Israeli annexation of parts the West Bank, saying that such a move would undermine U.S. national security interests in the region, and called for a 2-state solution. All 3 senators are considered staunch supporters of Israel. (HA 6/19)

Thousands of Palestinians gather along Gaza’s border to continue the Great March of Return for a 4th straight Friday. IDF troops violently disperse the demonstrations near Khan Yunis, Rafah, and Jabaliya refugee camp; 4 Palestinians are killed, including 1 minor, and at least 40 are injured. The protesters killed today bring the death toll stemming from the Great March of Return to 34. In the West Bank, IDF troops violently disperse Friday protests against Israel’s settlements, occupation, and separation wall in al-Bireh, Qalqilya, and nearby Kafr Qaddum; 5 Palestinians are injured and 1 is arrested. They also patrol near Hebron and Nablus. Israeli settlers slash the tires of 30 Palestinian vehicles and spray-paint racist graffiti on walls in Burqa village near Ramallah overnight, chop down approximately 100 Palestinian olive trees outside Nablus, and throw stones at a Palestinian school bus near Hebron (1 Palestinian minor is injured). After the release of a video depicting the killing of a minor along Gaza’s border today, the EU demands a “full investigation” and UN Special Coordinator Nickolay Mladenov calls on Israel to “stop killing children.” The IDF then announces that it will investigate the killing. (The IDF initially stated that there would be no investigation, and that the boy was shot after breaching the border area.) (HA, JP 4/21)

Approximately 30,000 Palestinians gather along Gaza’s border for a massive protest dubbed the “Great March of Return” commemorating Land Day and calling for refugees’ rights to return to their homes in Israel (see extensive coverage in JPS 47 [4]). They chant slogans, throw stones, and build protest tent camps in various locations. IDF troops violently disperse the demonstrations in multiple locations; 15 Palestinians are killed and hundreds are injured. Video recorded at the march shows a Palestinian being shot in the back while running away from the border. The protests are set to continue for 6 weeks. Hours before the protest, the IDF declares the border area a closed military zone, threatening violence should any person approach. Israeli tanks then shell and kill a Palestinian farmer working along the border. In the evening, 2 armed Palestinians open fire on an IDF post along Gaza’s northern border. Israeli soldiers return fire, and Israeli tanks and jets strike Hamas observations posts in the area as well; there is no major damage or injuries. UN secretary-general António Guterres calls for an independent and transparent investigation into the killings in Gaza today and “appeals to those concerned to refrain from any act that could lead to further casualties and in particular any measures that could place civilians in harm’s way,” according to a spokesperson. A Palestinian driver allegedly rams his car into a small group of IDF troops standing along a road near Nablus, killing 2, critically injuring a 3d, and moderately injuring a 4th. The Palestinian driver is arrested. Later, IDF troops conduct raids in the alleged attacker’s hometown, Barta‘a, near Jenin, arresting his brother and ransacking several homes. The Israeli authorities also revoke the work permits of approximately 100 of the alleged attacker’s relatives. The U.S. State Department announces that the new U.S. embassy in Israel will open in Jerusalem in 5/2018, implementing President Trump’s 12/6/17 pledge to move the embassy from Tel Aviv. The embassy is set to open with ambassador David Friedman and a skeleton staff working out of an existing U.S. facility in the Arnona neighborhood. “This decision will turn the 70th anniversary of Israeli independence into an even bigger celebration,” says Israeli PM Netanyahu. “Thank you, President Trump, for your leadership and your friendship.” Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO) secretarygeneral Saeb Erakat says, “The U.S. decision to recognize Jerusalem as Israel’s capital and now to move its embassy on the eve of marking 70 years since the Nakba [. . .] shows the determination of the U.S. administration to violate international law, destroy the 2-state solution, and provoke the feelings of the Palestinian people, as well as of all Arabs, Muslims, and Christians around the globe.” (AP, HA, JP, TOI, WAFA 2/23)

U.S. pres. Trump announces that he is formally extending the waivers on U.S. sanctions on Iran, upholding the U.S. obligations under the 7/14/2015 nuclear agreement one last time. This last extension, he says, will give the U.S. time to negotiate a “follow on” agreement with its European allies before the next deadline for extending sanctions relief, 120 days hence. “In the absence of such an agreement, the U.S. will not again waive sanctions to stay in the Iran nuclear deal,” he says. “And if at any time I judge that such an agreement is not within reach, I will withdraw from the deal immediately,” At the same time, the U.S. Treasury imposes sanctions on 14 Iranian individuals, including the head of Iran’s judiciary, Sadeq Larijani. In an interview with the Jerusalem Post, U.S. ambassador to Israel David Friedman says that the Trump administration is “disappointed with some of the rhetoric” coming from the Palestinians in response to U.S. pres.
