In the West Bank, Israeli forces seized 3 barracks and a water pump generator in Za’atra near Bethlehem. Israeli forces also handed demolition notices to several families in Qalandia. 2 Palestinians were arrested during late-night raids in Jenin. In East Jerusalem, a Palestinian man was killed by Israeli policemen in Issawiyya. The policemen said after the incident that they shot the man because he was lighting firecrackers in their vicinity. Other Palestinians were injured by rubber-coated bullets during the incident. Earlier in the day, Palestinians and Israeli activists were protesting the Israeli raids that have occurred in Issawiyya in the past 3 weeks. At least 5 Palestinians were arrested in East Jerusalem, including 4 in Wadi al-Juz. In Israel, Israeli officials reported 17 fires allegedly ignited by incendiary balloons launched from Gaza. PA president Mahmoud Abbas met with Chilean president Sebastián Pinera who was in Palestine on an official visit. Israeli forces also arrested PA Jerusalem affairs minister Fadi al-Hadami, who had accompanied President Pinera to the Haram al-Sharif compound on 6/26. (WAFA 6/27; HA 6/30)

In the West Bank, Israeli settlers vandalized 10 vehicles and sprayed graffiti reading “non-Jews=enemies” on private homes in Sarta near the settlements of Barkan and Revava. Israeli forces demolished a structure under construction in Anata northeast of Jerusalem. The demolition led to clashes with local Palestinians, causing tear gas inhalation injuries. In Dayr Balut near Salfit, Israeli forces demolished 2 caravans and a car wash. 15 Palestinians were arrested during late-night raids in and around Jenin, Ramallah, Nablus, and Tubas. The Israeli foreign ministry reprimanded the Chilean ambassador to Israel after the Chilean president Sebastián Pinera visited the Haram al-Sharif compound with PA officials on 6/25. The Israeli foreign minister Yisrael Katz called the tour of the East Jerusalem holy site a “violation of Israel’s sovereignty on the Temple Mount.” (HA 6/26)

The Omani foreign ministry announced that Oman will open an embassy in Ramallah. (AJ, WAFA 6/26)

For the 2d day in a row, officials and businesspeople from the Middle East, Europe, and the U.S. met in Bahrain for the Peace to Prosperity workshop. It was reported that 15 Palestinian businesspeople showed up despite the Palestinian-announced boycott. 1 Palestinian spoke at the conference. The Lebanese prime minister Saad al-Hariri said that his government and the Lebanese parliament oppose the U.S. peace plan. It is believed that $6 billion is set aside for Lebanon to permanently settle Palestinian refugees in Lebanon. Hariri stipulated that, “our constitution bans naturalization.” No Lebanese representative participated in the workshop. (HA, HA, HA 6/26)

In the West Bank, Israeli forces arrested 5 Palestinian during late-night raids in and around Nablus, Jericho, and Halhul. In East Jerusalem, 1 Palestinian was arrested by Israeli forces during a late-night raid. (WAFA 5/21)

PA social development minister Ahmed Majdalani said that, “There will be no Palestinian participation in the Manama workshop,” and further stipulated that, “Any Palestinian who would take part would be nothing but a collaborator for the Americans and Israel.” The message came in response to the White House announcement that the economic component of U.S. president Donald Trump’s peace plan would be presented in Bahrain in June. PA prime minister Mohammed Shtayyeh said that, “The [Palestinian] cabinet wasn’t consulted about the reported workshop, neither over the content, nor the outcome nor timing.” (AJ, HA, WAFA 5/20)

Four hundred out of 535 members of the U.S. congress signed a letter to President Donald Trump calling on him to support Israel. The letter read, “With the region in flux, it remains critical that we reiterate to both friend and foe in the region that we continue to support Israel’s right to defend itself.” (HA 5/21)

Trump tweeted that, “If Iran wants to fight, that will be the official end of Iran. Never threaten the United States again!” Iranian foreign minister Javad Zarif called Trump’s tweet a genocidal taunt in a separate tweet. (HA 5/20)

In the West Bank, Israeli forces told 98 Palestinians that they would have to evacuate their property in the Jordan Valley in the next 4 weeks during specific time periods on Sundays, Mondays, Tuesdays, and Wednesdays for Israeli military training. Israeli forces also arrested 3 Palestinians during late-night raids in and around Hebron. In East Jerusalem, Israeli forces blocked several streets in Silwan and the Old City, impeding Palestinians from going to mosques to perform prayers. All Gaza and West Bank crossings into Israel were closed except for medical and other emergencies for the 2d day in a row. However, the Kerem Shalom crossing was partially opened for commercial traffic. Israeli authorities announced the closure on 5/6, citing Israeli celebrations of Memorial Day and Independence Day. After blocking the transfer of Qatari-funded fuel to Gaza on 5/5, Israeli prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu approved the delivery of fuel to Gaza. (HA, MNA 5/7)

The Qatari government announced that it will send $480 million to Palestinians in the West Bank and Gaza. $300 million is allocated for health and educational programs of the PA and $180 million for urgent humanitarian relief and for electricity in Gaza. (AJ 5/7)

U.S. secretary of state Mike Pompeo skipped a planned trip to Germany to meet German chancellor Angela Merkel to instead travel to Iraq and meet with Iraq’s president Barham Salih and Prime Minister Adil Abdul-Mahdi. Pompeo said he made the trip to Iraq because Iranian forces are “escalating their activity,” stating that Iranian threat of attacks were “very specific.” (AJ 5/8)

In the West Bank, Israeli forces fired tear gas near a Hebron elementary school, causing tear gas inhalation injuries among students and teachers. Israeli forces raided Sabastiyya near Nablus and set up roadblocks on 3 entrances to the village. 10 Palestinians were arrested during late-night raids in and around Bethlehem, Shu‘fat, Ramallah, Jenin, Tulkarm, and Qalqilya. In East Jerusalem, 4 Palestinians were released after 2 weeks of detention but were banned from returning to their homes in Silwan for 7 days. Hundreds of Christians from Gaza were denied permits by Israel to visit Christian holy sites in East Jerusalem and Bethlehem for Easter holidays. In Israel, 1 Palestinian construction worker from the West Bank died while being arrested by Israeli police for working illegally in Israel. In Egypt at an Arab League meeting, PA president Mahmoud Abbas called on Arab League members to reject the Trump administration’s “peace plan.” The Arab League pledged $100 million a month to help the PA economy as Israel continued to withhold PA tax revenue. In the West Bank, 2 apartments in Hebron belonging to the family of a Palestinian convicted for the murder of an Israeli in February were demolished by Israeli forces. In Salfit, Israeli forces raided and took measurements for demolition of a home belonging to the family of a Palestinian alleged to have attacked Israeli settlers in the settlement of Ariel on 3/17. The alleged perpetrator was killed by Israeli forces on 3/20. Israeli forces also violently dispersed the weekly anti-settlement protests in Kafr Qaddum using live ammunition, rubber-coated bullets, and tear gas, injuring 6. One French activist was arrested during the protest. In East Jerusalem, a soccer tournament in Bayt Safafa was shut down by Israeli police, claiming that it was organized by the PA. In Gaza, Israeli forces attacked 2 Hamas posts east of al-Bureij refugee camp after shots allegedly were fired at Israeli soldiers near the Gaza fence, causing damage, but no injuries were reported. Israeli forces also fired live ammunition, tear gas, and rubber-coated bullets at protesters partaking in the weekly Great March of Return protests, injuring at least 46 Palestinians. Off the coast of Gaza, Israeli naval forces opened fire at Palestinian fishermen; no injuries were reported. According to Israeli sources, an incendiary balloon was found on a beach near Ashqelon in Israel. Israeli authorities announced that it would institute a week-long closure between 4/19 and 4/27 of entry points to Israel from Gaza and the West Bank for the celebration of Passover. In an interview with the Atlantic, the outgoing French ambassador to the U.S. Gérard Araud, in discussing the Trump administration’s “peace plan,” called Israel an apartheid state. He said, “They [Israel] have the West Bank, but at the same time they don’t have to make the painful decision about the Palestinians, really making them really, totally stateless or making them citizens of Israel. They won’t make them citizens of Israel. So they will have to make it official, which is we know the situation, which is an apartheid. There will be officially an apartheid state. . . . They are in fact already.” Araud also recounted a conversation between French president Emmanuel Macron and U.S. president Donald Trump, in which Trump said “I have given everything to the Israelis; the Israelis will have to give me something.” (AM 4/19; HA 4/24)

The U.S. envoy to the Middle East Jason Greenblatt rebuffed in a tweet speculations that part of the Trump administration’s “peace plan” includes transferring parts of Egypt’s Sinai to the Gaza Strip. (HA 4/19)

In the West Bank, a group of Israeli settlers from the Yitzhar settlement attacked a Palestinian family in the village of ‘Urif south of Nablus. A video shows the Israeli settlers hurling rocks at the Palestinian family while the family takes cover, injuring 1 and causing moderate damage to property, including 2 vehicles. In Hebron, a Palestinian man was rushed to a hospital after being shot in the face by Israeli forces. In East Jerusalem, 5 Palestinians were arrested in late-night raids; 1 of the detained was Adnan Gheith, the PA governor of Jerusalem. Mohammed Shtayyeh was sworn in as new PA prime minister in Ramallah by President Mahmoud Abbas. The former prime minister Rami Hamdallah resigned in January. Of the 22 cabinet members in the new cabinet, 17 are new in their position. (AJ, HA, WAFA 4/13)

In the West Bank, Israeli settlers uproot 473 olive trees from Palestinian groves near Hebron. IDF troops arrest 3 Palestinians during late-night raids near Qalqilya, Jenin, and Nablus; and patrol near Qalqilya and Salfit. In East Jerusalem, right-wing Jewish activists tour Haram al-Sharif in the morning. Along Gaza’s border, Israeli forces conduct a limited incursion to level land near Dayr al-Balah and open fire on Palestinian farmlands near al-Maghazi refugee camp, causing no damage. A senior U.S. official says the U.S. president Donald Trump’s son-in-law and senior advisor Jared Kushner is planning to discuss the Trump administration’s long-awaited Palestinian-Israeli peace plan at an international security conference in Warsaw on 2/14. The Trump administration is co-organizing the conference on 2/13–14 and has invited Israel and a number of Arab states to attend (The Palestinians are not invited). A principle focus of the conference is Iran and its influence across the Middle East. In response, PA president Mahmoud Abbas calls for the international community to come together for a peace conference to devise a multilateral mechanism to advance the Palestinian-Israeli peace process. “This is where the European Union and its member states can play an important role alongside the [UN] Security Council,” he says.
