Occupied Palestine/Israel: Curfews are imposed on Nusayrat camp and parts of Gaza City [FJ 10/30].

Other Countries: Jordan's King Hussein, PLO chairman Yasir Arafat, and Egyptian pres. Husni Mubarak meet in Aqaba. An aide to Mubarak states the meeting was to "let him [the Israeli voter] know when he casts his vote that there is an Arab partner ready for negotiations" [NYT 10/23]. Arafat, Hussein agree in principle to a Jordanian-PLO confederation [LAT 10/24].

Military Action

Occupied Palestine/Israel: Demonstrations erupt throughout the occupied territories leaving 12 people injured [FJ 10/30].

Arab World: Israeli soldier dies from wounds received during a car bombing on 10/19 [NYT 10/24].

Occupied Palestine/Israel: Israeli-imposed curfew in W. Bank keeps 185,000 Palestinians in their homes [WP 8/20].

Arab World: Jordan announces that it will issue temporary passports to residents of the W. Bank [WP 8/20].

Military Action

Occupied Palestine/Israel: In Artas 7 Palestinians are shot during demonstrations; 4 Palestinians are shot in al-Am'ari refugee camp [FJ 8/28]. Arab World: A car explodes in southern Lebanon killing 2 Arabs and slightly injuring 3 Israeli solders [LAT 8/20].

Occupied Palestine/Israel: Israel lifts curfew on Nablus [WP 5/18, NYT 5/18]. Curfew is lifted on Beach camp in Gaza, but area is later declared closed military zone. Israeli officials announce W. Bank schools will reopen in 3 phases, with first phase starting 5/23. Merchants observe near total strike marking second day of three-day feast at the end of Ramadan [WP 5/18].

Other Countries: Iraeli F.M. Shimon Peres visits Washington for talks with Pres. Reagan and Soviet ambassador to U.S. Yuri Dubinin. [NYT 5/18].

Military Action

Occupied Palestine/Israel: Israeli troops wound, capture an Arab gunmanear the Jordanian border [5/18]. IDF troops wound man in Qalandiya refugee camp after man tried to seize gun from a soldier [WP 5/18, NYT 5/18, FJ 5/22]. Israeli police enter Maqassad hospital in East Jerusalem, arrest 3 visitors [FJ 5/22]. Israel reprimands 2 soldiers for firing on a village where a Palestinian was killed on 5/26. One soldier is "severely scolded"; the other is given a suspended 35-day jail sentence [NYT 5/18]. Soldiers sweep through jabalya and Bayt Hanun making arrests [FJ 5/22].

Occupied Palestine/Israel: Israel bans travel by Palestinian residents between W. Bank and Gaza Strip and bars fuel shipments to Arab-owned stations for 3d day. Palestinians begin 2-day general strike, shutting down almost all of W. Bank, most of Gaza Strip. Israel cuts W. Bank's and Gaza Strip's international phone connections. IDF closes produce markets in Jenin and Jericho. Reports indicate Israel has cut electricity and telephone lines in Qabatiyyah and forbidden residents to travel to Jordan. IDF announces sentencing of 2 soldiers involved in beating of Palestinians that was filmed by U.S. network; 1 is sentenced to 21 days imprisonment, the other to 10 days. Army also announces that U. S. photographer has been charged with participating in rock-throwing demonstration [WP 3/16].

Other Countries: Sec. of State Shultz and P.M. Shamir fail to reach agreement on Middle East peace plan during meetings in Washington [NYT 3/16].

Military Action Occupied Palestine/Israel: Plestinian is shot dead during clash with soldiers in Ramallah-area village of Dayr Jarir [WP, NYT 3/16]. Another Palestinian is reported killed by army gunfire in Anza village, near Jenin [FJ 3/20]. At least 4 Palestinians are wounded by troops trying to disperse demonstrations in Qalqiliyyah [WP 3/16]. In Jaba village near Nablus, Palestinian is shot dead by soldiers [NYT 3/16]. Soldiers shoot, wound 5 villagers in 'Azzun. Daylong demonstrations are reported in Nablus and surrounding villages and camps. In Qalqiliyyah, Palestinian protesters block roads, bum tires, and stone military vehicles; soldiers close off city, impose curfew. At least 9 are wounded by army gunfire [FJ 3/20].
