AMB mbr. Muhammad Ubayyat is killed when a bomb in a pay phone he is using explodes; the IDF apparently intended to assassinate Ubayyat's brother, Bethlehem tanzim cmdr. Nassir Ubayyat, and killed Muhammad in error. The IDF makes a predawn raid on Rafah r.c., demolishing 6 Palestinian homes allegedly hiding tunnels to Egypt, killing 2 Palestinians (including a 4 yr. old crushed by a falling wall), wounding 25, bulldozing 10 dunams of land; fatally shoots 2 Palestinians nr. the Rafah border; fires on a Palestinian vehicle nr. Jenin, killing 1 Palestinian woman, injuring 2 others; fatally shoots a stone-throwing Palestinian teenager in Tulkarm; bulldozes 3 bird farms, a water network in Abasan; demolishes a Palestinian home in Jenin; conducts arrest raids in Hebron, Jenin, Ramallah. The IDF assassinates wanted AMB mbrs. Ali Ajuri (who allegedly plotted the 7/17 Tel Aviv bombing, reportedly is the leader of al-Nathir) and Murad Marshud, firing air-to-surface missile at them in Jenin. Israel orders Ajuri's brother, sister deported to Gaza for sheltering him. The IDF also captures an armed Egyptian infiltrator, who crossed the border into Israel nr. Elat; imposes a curfew on al-Qarara, orders all men over age 15 to surrender for questioning, conducts house-to-house searches, bulldozes 3 dunams of agricultural land. Throwing out appeals by 49 Palestinian families, Israel's High Court upholds the IDF's right to demolish homes of Palestinians accused of "terrorist" attacks without giving family mbrs. warning. Currently, 107 homes that housed suicide bombers are slated for demolition, plus 100s of other homes belonging to other "suspected terrorists." (HA, MM, NYT, WP 8/7; al-Quds 8/7 in WNC 8/12)

A Jewish settler injured in the 7/16 bus ambush dies of her injuries, bringing the toll in that attack to 9. A previously unknown group called al-Nathir claims responsibility for the 7/17 Tel Aviv bombing, originally claimed by Islamic Jihad. The IDF bulldozes a Palestinian house, aviary nr. Dayr al-Balah; conducts arrest raids in Hebron (including confiscating files fr. The IDF fatally shoots 3 armed infiltrators fr. Egypt in the s. Negev. A female suicide bomber detonates a device at an IDF roadblock in the West Bank, wounding 3 soldiers; 2 Israeli Arabs traveling with her are arrested, 1 is shot and wounded. The woman, an al-Najah University student originally affiliated with Hamas (see 1/27), 1st approached Hamas, Islamic Jihad about staging a suicide bombing but was refused; the AMB ultimately provided her with explosives. In E. Jerusalem, a Palestinian fatally shoots his Jewish settler employer in a politically motivated attack. IDF soldiers fire on Palestinians outside al-Nur mosque in Brazil for the 2d day, wounding 4. Late this evening, the IDF begins air strikes on Balata. Jewish settlers bulldoze Palestinian land nr. Bracha settlement, set up a caravan. The IDF bulldozes Palestinian land nr. Jenin; reportedly spray range land with poison nr. Tubas, killing may goats, sheep.
