In the West Bank, Israeli forces demolished 1 house under construction in Aqabah. In East Jerusalem, Israeli settlers raided the Haram al-Sharif compound, closing off parts of it to Muslim worshippers. 16 Palestinians were arrested during late-night raids in Isawiya, al-Tur, and Hizma. Israeli Palestinian Bedouins protested outside of the official residence of Israeli prime minister Naftali Bennett against neglect of the Bedouin communities in Israel and the Jewish National Fund’s displacement by forestation project. The protesters also demanded that Israel release all people detained during the protests in the Naqab against the forestation project. The protest was organized by the Higher Arab Monitoring Committee and the National Council for Arab Mayors. Palestinians also demonstrated outside of the Jerusalem municipality building against demolitions in East Jerusalem. (HA, WAFA 1/30)

The PFLP reaffirmed that it will not participate in the upcoming PNC meetings, citing fears that the meetings will deepen the divide amongst Palestinian parties. (MEMO 1/31)

Israeli media reported that PA president Mahmoud Abbas asked Israeli defense minister Benny Gantz to release 25 Palestinian prisoners during their meeting at Gantz’s home on 12/28/2021. The reporting said that the 25 prisoners have been detained before 1993 but did not name who President Abbas was asking to have released. Gantz, reportedly, did not give Abbas a firm answer on whether he would help with the request. (TOI, WAFA 1/30; MEMO 1/31)

In the West Bank, Israeli forces violently dispersed Palestinian protesters in Kafr Qaddum, injuring 1 minor who was hit by a stun grenade; others suffered tear-gas related injuries. Israeli forces also violently dispersed Palestinian protesters in Bayt Dajan, injuring 3 with rubber-coated bullets and others suffered tear-gas related injuries. 4 Palestinians were arrested during late-night raids in and around Hebron and Tulkarm. In East Jerusalem, 2 Palestinians were arrested during a late-night raid in Wadi al-Juz. In Gaza, Israeli forces opened fire at agricultural lands east of al-Fukhari; no injuries were reported. Haaretz reported that Israeli prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu is ignoring a request made by Jordan to have Israel supply water, as Jordan is experiencing a water shortage. Israel provides Jordan with water as agreed in the 2 countries’ peace agreement and Israel sometimes provides Jordan with extra water when Jordan is experiencing droughts. Prime Minister Netanyahu’s decision to ignore Jordan’s request is reportedly in retaliation for Jordan’s decision to close its airspace to him for a planned trip to the UAE after Israel complicated a planned visit by Jordan’s crown prince to the Haram al-Sharif compound on 3/10, which the crown prince ultimately canceled. In the West Bank, Israeli settlers vandalized 70 olive trees in al-Walaja. Israeli forces arrested 2 Palestinian children aged 6 and 8 in Hizma and 2 others during late-night raids in Rummana and Idha. In East Jerusalem, Israeli authorities delivered 1 demolition notice for a 2-story apartment building in Issawiyya. Off the coast of Gaza, Israeli naval forces opened fire at Palestinian fishermen within 3 nautical miles west of Bayt Lahiya; no injuries were reported. In Gaza, Palestinians protested outside UNRWA offices in 8 refugee camps after UNRWA announced cuts in food aid. 20,000 UAE-funded doses of the Sputnik V vaccine arrived in Gaza through the Rafah crossing. Mohammad Dahlan, outspoken opponent of PA president Mahmoud Abbas, claimed he had secured the delivery. Dahlan is an advisor to UAE crown prince Mohammed bin Zayed. (AP, HA 2/21)

It was reported that the PA had delivered a letter for U.S. president Joe Biden to his deputy assistant secretary for Israeli and Palestinian affairs Hady Amr saying that all Palestinian factions, including Hamas, are committed to a 2-state solution on the 1967 borders with East Jerusalem as the capital of Palestine. PA civil affairs commission chairman Hussein al-Sheikh said the PA would ask Israel to allow Palestinian prisoners to partake in the Palestinian elections. (WAFA 2/21)

Israel announced that it had made an agreement with Egypt to build a pipeline connecting Israel’s offshore natural gas field Leviathan with liquefied natural gas terminals in Egypt. Israel also reported that a large oil spill off the coast of Gaza and Israel led to the deaths of sea creatures, including sea turtles and whales.
