In the West Bank, Israeli forces shoot and kill a Palestinian child in Khirbet Laham. Israeli forces also assault 2 Palestinians during a raid in Bani Na’im. Elsewhere, Israeli forces assault 2 Palestinians during a raid in Silwad. Israeli forces also shoot and injure a Palestinian and arrest 15 Palestinians during a raid in Beit Umar. Meanwhile, Israeli forces seize a concrete mixer in Rafat. In East Jerusalem, Israeli authorities force a Palestinian family to demolish their own home in al-Tur, displacing 5 people. In Gaza, Israeli forces bomb Dayr al-Balah, Gaza City, Rafah, and Khan Yunis, killing at least 117 people. Israeli tanks and snipers also fire at the Nasser Hospital in Khan Yunis, killing 2 Palestinian, injuring 3, and causing damage. Israeli naval forces shoot and kill a Palestinian fisherman off the coast of Dayr al-Balah. In Lebanon, Israeli forces attempt to assassinate Basel Salah, who Israel says is “close to Hamas,” in an airstrike on south of Beirut, killing 2 civilians while Salah survives. Israeli forces also bomb a site near Jadra, killing 3 people. Elsewhere, Israeli forces also attack Bint Jbeil and Markaba. Hezbollah attacks 2 Israeli military sites in al-Manara and Hadab Aita Heights. In Syria, an Israeli airstrike reportedly kills 3 in Damascus. In Yemen, U.S. forces attack Hodeidah, causing damage. More than 28,064 Palestinians have been killed by Israeli forces in Gaza, including at least 11,500 children and 7,200 women, and around 67,611 have been injured since 10/7/2023. At least 8,000 people are missing in rubble, including 1,700 children. 385 Palestinians have been killed by Israeli forces and settlers in the West Bank and East Jerusalem since 10/7/2023, including 98 children. More than 4,426 people have been injured. Israel reports that 1,139 Israelis and foreign nationals have been killed and 5,400 have been injured in Israel since 10/7/2023, including Israeli soldiers. In addition, 225 Israeli soldiers have been killed and 1,314 injured in Gaza since the ground invasion began on 10/27/2023. Over 1.93 million Palestinians, nearly 85% of the population of Gaza, have been displaced since 10/7/2023. There has been a complete electricity blackout in Gaza since 10/12/2023 due to the Israeli blockade. At least 70,000 housing units have been destroyed and 290,000 have been damaged in Israeli airstrikes since 10/7/2023, constituting over 60% of all housing units. 19 trucks carrying aid enter Gaza. The body of 6-year-old Palestinian Hind Rajab is found dead in Gaza City after she is killed by Israeli forces along with several members of her family on 1/30. Rajab’s call for help was widely circulated on social media. 2 medics trying to rescue Rajab were also killed after Israeli forces blew up their ambulance. Israel’s military claims that Hamas had a tunnel network and a communications center underneath the UNRWA headquarters in Gaza City. UNRWA commissioner-general Philippe Lazzarini says UNRWA staff fled the headquarters on 10/12/2023 and have not been back since but says the agency conducted an inspection of the premises in September 2023 and did not find anything suspicious. In East Jerusalem, approximately 35 right-wing Jewish activists tour Haram al-Sharif. In the West Bank, IDF troops arrest 7 Palestinians and confiscate NIS 500,000 (approximately $134,731) during raids near Jenin, Tulkarm, Hebron, and Nablus; and patrol near Hebron, Tulkarm, and Salfit. Along Gaza’s border, Israeli forces conduct a limited incursion to level land near Khan Yunis and open fire on Palestinian shepherds and agricultural lands near Dayr al-Balah, causing no damage or injuries. PA president Mahmoud Abbas signs accession papers for the State of Palestine to join 11 international organizations and conventions, including the Universal Postal Union, Convention on the Nationality of Married Women, Optional Protocol to the Convention on the Rights of the Child, Optional Protocol to the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities, Optional Protocol to the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination against Women, Basel Protocol on Liability and Compensation for Damage Resulting from Transboundary Movements of Hazardous Wastes and their Disposal, Vienna Convention of Road Traffic, Protocol concerning countries or territories at present occupied, Convention on Consent to Marriage, Minimum Age for Marriage and Registration of Marriages, Agreement Establishing the Common Fund for Commodities, and the International Convention on the Arrest of Ships. One day after Israeli defense minister Avigdor Lieberman resigned in protest of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s decision to reach a cease-fire with the armed Palestinian groups in Gaza, both Finance Minister Moshe Kahlon and Interior Minister Aryeh Deri call for snap elections to be held as soon as possible. Meanwhile, hundreds of Israelis from communities near Gaza gather in central Tel Aviv to protest the government’s response to the recent rocket fire from Gaza. Many call for Netanyahu to resign. Netanyahu, for his part, presents to a group of leaders from the border communities a NIS 500 million (approximately $135 million) plan to support them over the next 2 years. UNRWA commissioner general Pierre Krähenbühl says that the agency has almost entirely made up for the budget shortfall caused by U.S. president Trump’s decision to slash U.S. support for UNRWA earlier this year. He says that UNRWA has raised an addition $382 million, bringing the deficit to just $64 million. “I’ll be very honest in saying, I don’t think many people believed that we would be able to overcome a $446 million shortfall at the beginning of the year,” he says, crediting the EU, Kuwait, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, and the UAE for each upping their pledges of support this year. Palestinian witnesses film the scene, and their footage shows Israeli soldiers preparing to plant a knife on the youth as grounds for his arrest. Elsewhere in the West Bank, IDF troops arrest 5 Palestinians during late-night raids nr. Jenin, Ramallah, and Hebron; and patrol nr. Nablus, Qalqilya, Salfit, and Hebron. Israeli settlers uproot around 140 olive trees from Palestinian villages s. of Nablus. PA security forces (PASF) violently suppress demonstrations in Ramallah and Dahaysha r.c. nr. Bethlehem against the PA security coordination with Israel that led to the IDF killing of Basel al-Araj, Palestinian activist, on 3/6; at least 11 Palestinians are injured, including al-Araj’s father, and prominent hunger striker Khader Adnan is arrested. Two days after he spoke with U.S. pres. Trump by phone for around 10 minutes, PA pres. Abbas says that Trump “promised his full commitment to peace and to the 2-state solution.” Abbas and his advisors are reportedly pleased with Trump’s position on the issue. (JP, TOI 3/12)

In the West Bank, a Palestinian hitchhiker stabs and injures an Israeli settler driver who picked him up nr. Bethlehem. IDF troops violently disperse Palestinians outside the Ofer Prison nr. Ramallah protesting the 3/6 killing of Basel al-Araj and PA security coordination with Israel; 8 Palestinians are arrested. IDF troops also set up mobile checkpoints around the Bethlehem area in the evening, confiscate personal property, and arrest 8 Palestinians during raids in and around Hebron and Nablus; and patrol nr. Nablus and Hebron. Along Gaza’s border, Israeli forces dismantle an explosive device nr. Jabaliya r.c. Around the same time, Israeli forces shell an Islamic Jihad in Palestine (PIJ) post nearby, injuring 1 Palestinian, according to PIJ. The IDF says it will look into a connection between the incidents. Off Gaza’s coast, Israeli naval forces open fire on Palestinian fishing boats, causing no damage or injuries. During the U.S. State Dept.’s first press briefing under the Trump admin., a spokesperson says that the dept. is “working closely” with Trump on his new Middle East policy and that the admin. is working with Israel to figure out “what exactly it would look like” for Israel to restrict settlement growth. IDF troops conduct a raid on a house in al-Bireh nr. Ramallah in which they shoot and kill Basel al-Araj, a prominent Palestinian activist. Two other Palestinians are injured in confrontations with Israeli forces following the raid. Elsewhere in the West Bank, IDF troops shut down a workshop nr. Nablus, arrest 7 Palestinians during late-night raids nr. Jenin, and patrol nr. Salfit and Hebron. Israeli forces demolish a Palestinian home under construction in s. Hebron. Israeli settlers assault Palestinian farmers nr. Nablus, injuring 2. In East Jerusalem, Israeli forces conduct overnight raids in Issawiyya, sparking minor clashes with stone-throwing youths; 5 Palestinians are arrested and 3 are issued arrest summons. Meanwhile, Palestinian youths gather outside the Jerusalem Municipality complex nr. the Old City to protest the Israeli authorities’ closure of their school in Sur al-Bahir on 2/23. Israel’s Knesset passes a law barring foreign nationals who call for economic, cultural, or academic boycotts of Israel or “area under its control,” such as Israel’s settlements in the occupied Palestinian territories (oPt), from receiving entry visas or residency rights. The interior minister is granted the right to make exceptions on a case-by-case basis. (HA, JP, NYT 3/7)

Occupied Palestine/Israel: Israeli army orders 3 Palestinians deported for "subversive political activity," jails 15 others without charge under administrative detention orders [WP 8/30]. Israeli security authorities are holding an American, an Australian, and 6 Palestinians. The Westerners are accused of transporting Palestinians -said to be a commando squad - to Lebanon, from which the squad allegedly planned to attack Israel [WP 8/30]. Israeli State Prosecutor's Department decides to appeal for tougher sentences for 5 members of Jewish underground [TA 8/30].

Other Countries: First Intemational Christian Zionist Congress ends with appeal to all Jews to emigrate to Israel and to all Christians to give active help to Israel. Final resolutions provide for the creation of a $100 million fund to invest in industrial projects in Israel via a Basel-based company [TA 8/30].

Military Action

Arab World: Rival Druze and Shi'ite militias battle for control of West Beirut; fighting continues along the green line between east and west Beirut; 6 dead and 15 wounded. Christian and Muslim militias exchange 22 kidnap victims [NYT 8/30]. Fighting breaks out in Tripoli between pro-Syrian and Muslim fundamentalist militias [PI 8/30].
