In the West Bank, Israeli settlers vandalized 450 olive, plum, grape, and almond trees near Turmus ‘Ayya. 7 Palestinians were arrested, including 5 returning to the West Bank from Jerusalem at the Qalandia checkpoint, 1 crossing from the West Bank to Jordan via the Allenby Bridge, and 1 while working his land in Idhna. Haaretz reported that the World Zionist Organization’s settlement division was finalizing plans to invest $8.5 million to connect settlement outposts in the West Bank to the Israeli electrical grid and preparing plans to have the outposts retroactively authorized by the Israeli government. Israeli defense minister Benny Gantz approved 5,500 Palestinians to be registered with the Palestinian population registry and increased Gaza merchant permits for commerce in Israel from 1,500 to 15,000. Defense Minister Gantz also gave final approval for construction in Hizma and Harmaleh and 1st level approval for construction in Haris, Kisan, and Battir. Additionally, Israel said it would open a new crossing from Israel to the northern part of the West Bank to ease access to Jenin and delayed a meeting to expand Israeli settlements in East Jerusalem. The moves were described by Israel as a result of a meeting between Gantz and PA president Mahmoud Abbas last week and comes 1 day before U.S. president Joe Biden will arrive in Israel for a 4-day tour of Israel, Palestine, and Saudi Arabia. 4 members of the U.S. senate Chris Van Hollen (D-MD), Patrick Leahy (D-VT), Chris Murphy (D-CT), and Dick Durban (D-IL), wrote a letter to U.S. secretary of state Antony Blinken saying that the U.S. review of the evidence into the killing of Palestinian American journalist Shireen Abu Akleh “hardly constitutes an independent investigation into the overall circumstances of her killing.” In a separate letter, U.S. senators Cory Booker (D-NJ) and Bob Menendez (D-NJ) called on the Biden administration to provide a senior-level classified briefing on the investigation details and the administration’s plan for accountability. Citing insufficient evidence, the foreign ministries of Belgium, Denmark, France, Germany, Ireland, Italy, Holland, Spain, and Sweden issued a joint statement saying that the countries have decided to dismiss Israeli claims that 6 Palestinian rights organizations are linked to terrorism and will continue funding them. In the West Bank, an Israeli settler vandalized 10 mature olive trees in Burin. Israeli forces leveled 30 dunams (7.5 acres) of land in the villages of Qusra, Jayyus, and Aqraba. Israeli forces also razed land in Kardala. Elsewhere, Israeli forces raided Sabastia, closing off areas of the village to Palestinians. Israeli forces also violently dispersed Palestinian protesters in Deir al-Hatab, injuring 1 journalist with a rubber-coated bullet while others suffered tear-gas related injuries. 2 Palestinians were arrested during late-night raids in Jalazun refugee camp and Jericho. In East Jerusalem, more than 500 Israeli Jewish people toured the Haram al-Sharif compound. Israeli forces injured 1 Palestinian student with a rubber-coated bullet during a confrontation in al-Tur. 4 Palestinians were arrested during late-night raids in Shu‘fat refugee camp. At the UN Human Rights Council, Bahrain, on behalf of Israel, Morocco, and the UAE—2 other countries Israel normalized relations with—presented a joint statement calling on women to have a more prominent role in diplomacy and peace processes. No women were present during the normalization signing ceremony between Israel, the U.S., Bahrain, and the UAE. (HA 9/22)

33 countries chose not to attend the UN Durban IV conference against racism in New York, according to Israel, at its behest. Israel and the U.S. claim that the 1st Durban conference, held in 2001 in South Africa, was racist because it singled out Israeli treatment of Palestinians and labeled Zionism racist. In Gaza, top PA intelligence official, Col. Taysir Khattab, is killed when a remote-controlled bomb in his car explodes--an apparent Israeli assassination; his bodyguard is seriously injured. A bomb in a taxi in Tulkarm kills 1 Palestinian woman, injures 4; no one claims responsibility. The woman reportedly is the wife senior tanzim leader Ahmad Tabuk, who is currently held in a PA jail. In Durban, 6,000 international NGOs close 5 days of mtgs. on preventing racism, held on the sidelines of the WCAR. Their closing statement calls Israel a "racist, apartheid state," calls on Israel to end its "systematic perpetration of racist crimes," including segregation, separation, dispossession, restricted land access. The wk.-long UN World Conference Against Racism (WCAR) opens in Durban, South Africa. Of the 166 countries participating, only Canada, Israel, the U.S. do not sent high-level delegations to protest efforts by Arab states to condemn Israel's treatment of the Palestinians as racist.
