Occupied Palestine/Israel: Israeli Supreme Court states that Palestinians have right to appeal house demolition orders before action is taken; ruling gives Palestinians 48 hours to appeal order to military commander and, if refused, another 48 hours to appeal to high court [WP 7/31]. Palestinians observe general strike in O. T. [FBIS 7/31].

Arab World: Arafat meets with Iraqi president Saddam Husayn [FJ 8/8].

Military Action

Occupied Palestine/Israel: Israeli troops open fire, kill 17-year-old Palestinian in Ra's Karkar. Jewish settlers from Rafiah Yam shoot, kill 30-year-old Palestinian near Bayt Hanun. In Ramallah Palestinian from Bayt Lid dies from wounds received in May. In Nablus Palestinian dies from wounds received mid-July. Palestinian suspected of collaboration dies from injuries received 7/29. At least 7 Palestinians are wounded in O.T. [FBIS 7/31].

Arab World: PLO chairman Yasir Arafat calls on Israeli Arabs to "push forward the peace process" by voting in Israel's upcoming elections [LAT 10/24]. Pres. Mubarak of Egypt and Arafat fly to Baghdad, meet with Saddam Husayn [LAT 10/24].

Military Action

Occupied Palestine/Israel: Troops wound 9 Palestinians during protests in the occupied territories [NYT 10/24]. Clashes occur in Nablus, Jenin, Ramallah, Jabalya, Rafah, Beach, Sa'ir [FJ 10/30].

Arab World: Between 4 and 6 PFLP guerrillas are killed by Israeli troops in south Lebanon [NYT 10/24]. Israeli troops arrest "several" others in south Lebanon in connection with 10/19 car bombing [NYT 10/ 24, WP 10/25]

Occupied Palestine/Israel: Israeli Defense Minister Rabin rejects P.M. Thatcher's call for free elections in occupied territories, says EEC should contributeo material improvement of territories [BG, MG 5/27]. P.M. Thatcher later meets 8 Palestinian leaders at British consulate in Jerusalem [CT 5/27], including Bethlehem Mayor Ilyas Furayj, Rashad al-Shawwa, and Hanna Siniora [CT, LT 5/27], who give her memo. Israeli Attomey General Zamir asks police to examine evidence in case involving Shin Bet head [NYT 5/27]. Zamir will proceed with prosecution of Shin Bet head Avraham Shalom [MG 5/27].

Arab World: King Hussein travels to Baghdad to meet Iraqi President Sadam Husayn [LAT 5/27]. Al-Ahram reports Syrian plot to assassinate PLO Chairman Arafat [MG 5/27] and replace him with Syrian-backed Khalid al-Fahum, former chairman of PNC. PLO Chairman Arafat meets in Tunis with Dutch Foreign Minister Hans van den Broek, president of EEC Council of Ministers, despite Israeli protests. Hafiz al-Asad, on official visit to Greece, condemns terrorism.
